BACKGROUND
Rural area, which is basically characterized with agricultural practices and local wisdoms, has an important role in controlling as well as sustaining economics viability of most countries and regions in the world. In fact, the agricultural sector not only provides food and raw materials, but also gives employment opportunities to a very large proportion of communities either in city/urban or rural areas. It has also a great significance in international/global trade as well as foreign exchange resources, which in turn might improve a countrys GNP value. For instance, according to the data o f the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture (2013), the agricultural sector capable to involve about 46.5% of the total productive employment, and contribute to about 14.7% of the total GNP. On the other hand, socio-anthropological aspect such as gotong-royong or mutual aid is one of the prospective social capital practices having positive impact on the success of agricultural sector, hence rural community welfare. Low economics growth of rural community, and social economics/welfare gap between rural and city/urban community is a crucial issues, which needs to be paid attention by stakeholders. For example, the GDP of several districts/rural areas in Banyumas regency is 2-3 times lower than the GDP of Purwokerto city. Furthermore, according to the Indonesian statistical data (2012) the poor peoples in rural areas is about 15.12%, while those in city/urban areas is about 8.78%, of the total population. Therefore, the development of rural areas through revitalization of agricultural sectors and other related aspects with local wisdom basis is a need to realize better economics success and distribution in Indonesia.

Sustainable Rural Development Towards a Better World

Purwokerto, Central Java, INDONESIA, August 25-26, 2013 Rural development refers to the process of improving the quality of life and economic wellbeing of people living in relatively isolated and sparsely populated areas. Rural development has traditionally centered on the exploitation of land-intensive natural resources such as agriculture and forestry. However, changes in global production networks and increased urbanization have changed the character of rural areas. Increasingly tourism, niche manufacturers, and recreation have replaced resource extraction and agriculture as dominant economic drivers. The need for rural communities to approach development from a wider perspective has created more focus on a broad range of development goals rather than merely creating incentive for agricultural or resource based businesses. Education, entrepreneurship, physical infrastructure, and social infrastructure all play an important role in developing rural regions. More specific, the rural development might involve several activities as follows: 1) developing agricultural and rural infrastructure; 2) reforming agricultural/farming activities; 3) providing sustainable access of farmers to economics resources and capitalization; 4) improving productivity and quality of farmers and agriculture/farming; 5) diversifying rural economics activity; 6) development rural industrialization; and 7) developing farmers welfare and quality of live. In principle, the rural deve lopment is characterized by its emphasis on locally produced economic development as well as community empowerment strategies to improve nations competitiveness and autonomy in global perspective. In order to realize goals and successes of the rural development program, the International Conference on Sustainable Rural Development (ICSRD 2013) will be carried out to bring together academics and professionals to share their ideas and recent findings on all aspects of sustainable rural development. The conference will discuss relevant research topics in order to provide a broad vision on sustainable development of agricultural sector as a vital part of the rural economy, with emphasis on food security, environmental conservation, resources and economics management, and alternate renewable energy sources. The conference participants are expected to bring back new ideas to enhance the sustainable rural development in their local areas, in their countries. The International Conference on Sustainable Rural Development (ICSRD 2013) will be held on August 25-26, 2013 in Purwokerto, Indonesia. The conference will be hosted by the Department of Agricultural Engineering, Jenderal Soedirman University (UNSOED), Indonesia. The ICSRD 2013 conference is cosponsored by Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry Education and Culture, Republic of Indonesia and Jenderal Soedirman University, Purwokerto, Indonesia.
