Date of latest revision: 13-10-2011 Aims The purpose of this module is to integrate the fundamental principles of thermodynamics, heat, and mass transfer in analysis and design of heating and cooling systems. Intended Learning Outcomes Knowledge and understanding On completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of: 1. the basic principles of heating and cooling systems; Subject-specific cognitive skills On completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate ability to: 2. integrate the knowledge acquired and apply it to a range of new situations; Subject-specific practical skills On completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate ability to: 3. practice solutions to relevant problems and become familiar with the analysis of refrigeration cycles; Key/transferable skills On completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate ability to: 4. adopt an analytical approach to problem solving; conduct research and collect relevant information. Content Refrigeration cycle analysis, refrigerants, criteria for equipment design and selection, cold stores, cryogenics and liquefaction of gases. Analysis and selection of air conditioning systems, psychrometric processes, and performance. Heating and cooling load estimates. Analysis and design of heating and cooling systems for residential and industrial applications, design calculations are conducted for sizing of some components.

Methods of Learning, Teaching and Assessment Total student effort for the module: 100 hours on average. The BUE attendance policy applies, refer to current GAR and Student Handbook for further details Teaching & Learning: 1. 12, 2 hr lectures. This method informs learning outcomes 1, 2, 4. 2. 6, 3 hrs tutorials and/or labs. This method informs learning outcomes 2, 3, 4. 3. 58 hrs for private study. Assessment: 1. A 180 minute final exam as the exam involves heavy use of using tables and charts. This method carries 70% of the total mark and assesses learning outcomes 1, 2, 3. 2. Coursework, which includes one classwork, one homework, and one practical assignment. This method carries 30 % of the total mark and assesses learning outcomes 2, 3, 4. Feedback given to students in response to assessed work Individual written feedback on coursework; Feedback discussed as part of a tutorial; Developmental feedback generated through teaching activities Dialogue between students and staff in tutorials Individual feedback provided in tutorials Reading List: 1.
