Desired Characteristics of TWLD Mentors

The assigned mentor has these 15 characteristics. Is willing to mentor another member and is committed to that persons growth, development and integration into the culture and function of the organizational leadership. Familiar with the organizations norms and culture. Can articulate and teach the culture. Has, or is willing to gain, knowledge of module content in order to guide the mentee. Demonstrates honesty, integrity as a professional. Demonstrates respect and responsibility for stewardship. Demonstrates effective communication skills both verbally and nonverbally. Willing to help develop another professional through guidance, feedback and, occasionally, an insistence on a particular level of performance or appropriate direction. Initiates new ideas and fosters the mentees willingness and ability to make changes in his or her abilities based on the content of the modules. Has emotional intelligence needed to be aware of their own personal emotions and is sensitive to the emotions and feelings of the person they are mentoring. Is an individual who would be rated by their peers as highly successful in navigating the organizations and the professions culture. Demonstrates success in establishing and maintaining professional networks and relationships, both online and face to face. Willing to communicate failures as well as successes to the mentee. Able to spend an appropriate amount of time with the mentee in person, on phone or by electronic communication. Willing to acknowledge, as a mentor, that a mentee may not succeed in a leadership role. Able to say when the Mentor/Mentee relationship is not working and back away appropriately without regard to ego issues or the need to assign blame or gossip about the situation.
