By Wiley Sloan Novembers Highlands Rotary Bingo benefits Gilliams Promise, but the fun benefits everyone involved.
ark your calendar for the Rotary Club of Highlands Bingo night on Thursday, November 7. Monies raised will benefit Gilliams Promise, a group of local youth who have banded together to support one another in their fight against drugs and alcohol. The fun begins at 6:30 P.M. and runs for about two hours. Laughter fills the Highlands Community Building, located at the corner of Poplar Street and Hwy 64 -- next to the ball park. Cost is $1 per card per game. There will be 15 games, with the last being a grand cash prize game. Half of all money goes to Gilliams Promise, and the other half goes to lucky winners, while all of the fun goes to the players. You can also show your support for Gilliams Promise by being a table sponsor or having a table ad for $50. If you dont have a business to advertise, just let the ad say something as simple as John and Sue Smith support the youth of Gilliams Promise. All of the money paid for sponsorships/ads goes to Gilliams Promise. Checks should be made out to the Rotary Club of Highlands. They can be given to Mary Jane McCall, Executive Director, at Gilliams Promise. Call Mary Jane at (828) 526-2220 to let her know you want an ad. e v e n t h generation Highlander Angie Jenkins new coffee table book, Highlands, North CarolinaThe Early Years Volume II, is now available. Jenkins first book, Highlands, North Carolina The Early Years, came out in 2007. The books been a Highlands bestseller since it hit the shelves. It continues to be very much in demand, and is available in several area stores. This second volume features another 200 pages of historic scenes in and around Highlands. Jenkins has been collecting photos and working on the book since May 2012, a real labor of love for her. She is thrilled to also feature in her new book a large number of early Highlands photos from the Earle Young Jr. Collection, courtesy of David Young. The book is priced at $49.95. Jenkins is a direct descendant of Barak and Mary Nicholson Norton, early pioneers of the region, who settled in Whiteside Cove around 1820. The family moved to Highlands soon after the town was founded in 1875. Jenkins Highlands ancestors have served as postmaster, taught at Highlands School, owned the Central House (now Madisons Restaurant), Highlands House (now Highlands Inn), the Norton House (now Main Street Inn), The Hall House, which was located on in the block of Fifth, Chestnut, Sixth, and Horse Cove Road, Anderson Brothers Caf, Highlands Drug Store, Highlands Texaco, Andersons 5 & 10 (later changing its name to Highlands Variety Store), and also the Sears Catalog Agency and Radio Shack in more recent years. The family was also instrumental in the development of both the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation and First Presbyterian Church. Jenkins herself has served as organist at First Presbyterian Church for the past 37 years, in addition to teaching preschool music classes at several area preschools for many years. Christmas Parade

The Highlands Olde Mountain Christmas Parade, set for Saturday, December 7, may be the worlds biggest small-town Christmas.
f youre one of those who bemoans the commercialization of Christmas and longs for a simpler celebration of the season, mark your calendar for 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 7. Thats when the 21st incarnation of the Highlands Olde Mountain Christmas Parade winds down Main Street. The parade is the perfect tonic for the overblown, incredibly polished corporate exercises staged in other parts of the country. Theres a warm, homemade feel to much of the Highlands parade since its staged entirely by local groups, churches, businesses, fire departments and bands of neighbors. Its all delivered with pride, sparkle and more than a little bit of humor. Youll find handmade floats, at least one marching band, dancing garden ladies, dogs that amble more or less in formation, fire trucks, Smokey the Bear, classic cars, horses, the Highlands High School Homecoming Court, local politicians, and, of course, Santa. Its not uncommon for the parade to draw over 80 entries. Thats a remarkable accomplishment for a town with a year-round population of around 2,000. People begin lining Main Street early to ensure they get a good view and to chat with neighbors and visitors. The parade route spans three blocks, so there should be plenty of room for everyone. If youre thinking of inviting Santa to participate in your entry, please note that hes already accepted the Chambers invitation to appear at the end of the parade. A trio of photogenic camels return to add a dash of exotic flair to the Highlands Olde Mountain Christmas Parade, Saturday, December 7.
or the past several years, spectators at the Highlands Olde Mountain Christmas Parade have watched with glee as a trio of camels sauntered down Main Street. Yep, they will be here again in 2013. Omar, Noel, and Summer make their way from Danielsville, Georgia, a rural area about 20 miles north of Athens. The camels are guests of our area thanks to the members of the Highlands United Methodist Church. Back in 2006, church members Sherry Janes and Gay Kattel brainstormed for unique ways to bring new members to the church. They fondly remembered hearing the Christmas story and how excited children were with the camels. After making numerous calls, Sherry found Beau and Michelle Kaye, who live on a 117-acre farm along with their camels and a menagerie. Michelle remembers Sherrys first call. Beau and I really had never taken the camels off the farm. They were just our pets. Sherry was very convincing. Before I knew it we had agreed to come to Highlands. After our first visit we were hooked. It takes a strong hand to keep them in line. Camel handlers Ken Knight, Dennis Hall and Fred Motz have built up a rapport with each of their animals. Omar, the lead camel, weighs more than 3,000 pounds. Omar has an attitude and wants to be in charge. Once the camels were scheduled, Sherry and the entire HUMC Igniting Ministries Team had to find a place for the camels to stay on Friday night. The camels were such a hit at the parade that they have become a mainstay for every parade. Come early and stake out your viewing spot on Main Street. By Wiley Sloan The Highlands Community Christian Chorale will stage its annual Christmas Concert at 5:00 P.M. Saturday, December 14, and Sunday, December 15, at the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation.
elebrate the season at The Highlands Community Christian Chorales Christmas Concert at the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation at 5:00 P.M. Saturday, December 14, and 5:00 P.M. Sunday, December 15. A reception will follow the Sunday performance. The church is located at the corner of Fifth and Main Streets. The Chorale will consist of 40 of our areas most talented singers who have been practicing for this performance since Labor Day. They are performing under the direction of conductor Grat Rosazza. This years concert, entitled Sing We All Noel, will feature songs that we all know and love. There will be something for everyone in this concert, Grat says. Whether you prefer classical, traditional or folk music, you wont be disappointed in this years program. I am a big fan of the work of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, so expect to hear at least one or two arrangements. Classic song lovers will be inspired by Faures Cantique de Jean Racine written by the 19-year-old French composer in the 1860s. Enjoy the soothing tones of harpist Valerie Von Pechy Whitcup as she accompanies
the chorale. The African-American carol Go Tell It on the Mountain was written about the same time period as the Cantique and boasts a lively beat. You will be tapping your toes for this one. The Catalanish song Fum, Fum, Fum, originated in the late 16th or early 17th century. I look forward to the chorales rendition of O Holy Night. That is one of my favorite Christmas songs. Many people feel that Christmas would not be Christmas without one or two pieces from Handels The Messiah. We have included that too, says Grat. In addition to the harp, the chorale will be accompanied by Bryan Heller, pianist for the Cashiers United Methodist Church, and a small string orchestra. Everyone will get a chance to sing Christmas carols during intermission. I look forward to seeing each of you at the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation for one of these inspiring performances. Come early as the venues tend to fill up quickly. Be prepared to share a small donation to help the chorale offset the cost of music.

ow that the holiday season is here, a lot of kids and more than a few adults are taking stock of their lives and making adjustments. Others are compiling lists of things needed and desired, the fruits of a years worth of good behavior. Whichever camp they fall in, theyre counting the days until Santa Claus arrives in Highlands at Town Square. Hell be at the Town Tree Lighting on Saturday, November 30, and then the Saturdays leading up to Christmas. Even in the hectic days leading up to Christmas, Santa manages to find time to sit and listen to his friends and Highlands has long been one of his favorite spots. According to insider accounts, the clean mountain air helps him maintain his unfailingly cheerful
spirit, which makes Highlands one of the ideal spots to ask for an especially unlikely present or to appeal for clemency. If youre so inclined, you can bring a treat for Santa or his reindeer. But really, none of that is necessary. He packs on the snacks in those few hours before dawn on Christmas morning and the reindeer are confined to a high-carb sprinters diet in the weeks leading up to the Big Night. The Highlands Town Tree Lighting, set for 6:30 P.M. November 30 on Main Street, sets the stage for a joyful season.
K, its two days after Thanksgiving. Youve spent two days catching up with family and friends or working off Thanksgiving Dinner with a marathon round of Extreme Shopping, but it just doesnt feel like Christmas is less than a month away. Thats why youll want to remember the Highlands Downtown Tree Lighting, slated to begin at 6:30 P.M. Saturday, November 30, in front of Highlands United Methodist Church. Its a celebration unlike anything else on the towns social calendar. People of every age join in the fun. In fact, some folks drive all the way up from Atlanta to participate. The fun starts with caroling that everyones invited to join. A small ceremony features readings from the Bible
and storytelling. Cookies and hot chocolate are the perfect complement to a frosty evening. Santa will be on hand to hear wishes and appeals. The evenings capped by the lighting of the enormous tree that graces the front lawn of the Methodist Church. It all adds up to a warm holiday tradition thats cherished by young and old. To prepare for the crowds, Main Street will be closed between Second and Fourth streets beginning at 6:00 P.M. The Highlands Downtown Tree Lighting is sponsored by the Highlands Chamber of Commerce. If thats the case, take time for a leisurely lunch and then join your friends at the First Presbyterian Church of Highlands at 2:00 P.M. Song Leader Stell Huie and pianist/ organist Angie Jenkins will lead everyone in well-loved Christmas carols. Young and old alike celebrate the season in song at this annual event. For years to come, your family will speak fondly of this favorite Christmas outing. The church is located at the corner of Fifth and Main Street, high on the hill. Dress is casual. Santa delights in greeting his youngest fans and reminding them of the promise at the heart of Christmas.
anta Claus will visit Highlands United Methodist Church for a breakfast with local children and those from far away at 8:30 A.M. Saturday, December 14. After a delicious breakfast prepared by church volunteers, children will get to complete a holiday craft and listen to the traditional Nativity story. Each child will have the opportunity to talk to Santa and tell him what theyre hoping to find this Christmas. The suggested donation is $10 per family. Reservations should be made by calling the church no later than Monday, December 9, at (828) 526-3376. Jennifer Forrester, Director of Children Ministries at HUMC, says, The children will have plenty of time to share their Christmas list with Santa and to have pictures made. Make your reservations early and come out for a stellar holiday celebration with Santa. The church is located at 315 Main Street, the site of the Town Christmas Tree.

he Bascom will host its fourth annual Artists Marketplace from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. November 29 and 30 at its Bascom Studio Barn. Those who have shopped at this event in the past come back year-afteryear to buy unique, handcrafted gifts created by regional artists. Pottery, jewelry, fiber art, paper creations, and more will fill the barn hall, and all are priced under $100. The Hard Candy Christmas Art & Craft Show at Western Carolina University, set for November 29-30, recalls the simple joys of holidays from long ago.
he Hard Candy Christmas Art & Craft Show opens for its 26th year inside Western North Carolina Universitys Ramsey Center in Cullowhee, North Carolina, November 29-30. This much anticipated event features authentic crafts from the hands of 100 regional and local artists and craftsmen. In the Depression days in the mountains, Christmas was always celebrated with stockings stuffed with apples, oranges and hard candy. The best gifts were handmade with love. Organizer Doris Hunter brings the memory of that custom to the holidays with this craft event. Customers line up early for the first selection of pottery, woodcraft, jewelry, folk art, glass art, and specialty sweets and breads. Collectors of Old World Santas, heirloom ornaments and miniatures always find something new. To give you home an irresistible holiday scent, b uy a fresh mountain greenery wreath or scented dried
fruit rope. Macon Countys watercolorist/photographer Michael M. Rogers, will be bringing his annual gallery open house presentation to this years show. As an avid hiker, hell share the waterfalls, overlooks and wild flowers on canvas and video. You can take a piece of the mountains back home with you to enjoy all year. Ronnie Evans will be strumming favorite Christmas songs for background. His CDs will be for sale, too. With so much to offer, its no wonder the Hard Candy Show has grown from a little show in Franklin with eight exhibitors to the largest Christmas gift show in Western North Carolina. ighlands Cashiers Players will hold auditions for its winter production of Weekend Comedy, at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, November 17, at the MartinLipscomb Performing Arts Center on Chestnut Street in Highlands. If callbacks are required, theyll be staged at the PAC at 6:00 P.M. Monday, November 18. Weekend Comedy by Jeanne and Sam Bobrick, is the funny and insightful tale of a couple in their late 40s or early 50s and a couple in their mid- to late-20 who have accidentally rented the same cottage for a threeday weekend. They decide to share it. Peggy Jackson, a 50-ish matron, has dragged her reluctant husband Frank, an office-supplies dealer, off for a long weekend in a remote cabin with no phone, no newspapers, no television and no kids. Peggy has romance on her mind, while stick-in-the-mud Frank is dully wondering what theyre going to do all
weekend. She finally gets him in the mood for romance, only to be interrupted by the arrival of Jill and Tony, a pair of twenty-somethings whove also rented the same cottage to celebrate their fourth anniversary of cohabitating. To his wifes chagrin, Frank insists that the younger couple stay for dinner. Ultimately, the two couples agree to share the one-bedroom, one-bathroom cabin for the weekend. They start out having a good time together, but the close quarters and the differences between the two couples lead to inevitable frictions. The men, especially, have trouble reconciling each others point of view. The resulting generational clash is rich in comedic possibilities and the play effortlessly riffs on the tagteam premise. Weekend Comedy will be staged Feb. 20-23, and Feb. 28-March 2.

hile Patti Gilley thinks of herself as just ordinary folks, there is no denying she possesses an extraordinary gift. That talent lay dormant until Patti was in her early 50s. Once her kids were grown, her focus shifted from nurturing children to nurturing her own artistic soul. Patti was a tomboy growing up, a girl a lot happier soaking up the out-of-doors than drooling over dresses in a store window. She had a natural talent for noticing detail, color, line, form, shape. Seeing the world through an artists eyes, she took tons of photos of images that intrigued her. Once she had the freedom to put a brush and acrylic to her special vision, painting became second nature. Her early photo library was and still is her in-studio inspiration. Nowadays everything she looks at becomes a potential subject, even that frilly chemise in the window, though her choice of subject matter still gravitates towards Nature. She has a fond memory of her first painting. She says, We had a little house built in Murphy. I found a discarded saw blade on site. I kept it a couple of years and finally decided to paint a picture of our cabin on it. It looked fairly good, so I hung it up. Her father-in-law liked it so much he started bringing her antiques and old collectibles, each with a story to tell. She began painting scenes and animals on these. them and loved them. She took some of her work to an art show and came home with several hundred dollars. Wow! she says. That blew my mind. She adds with a laugh, My painting evolved from that and kind of got out of hand. Animals, domestic and wild are Pattis love. Each has its own personality. She has a knack for capturing that wrinkle in a muzzle as a bear sniffs the air, the way the light bounces off a tuft of fur, or that mischievous twinkle in the eye of a cub or burro. Patti takes pride in the fact she never had any formal training. She simply relied on her natural gift and refined it with practice, practice, practice. She finally ran out of antiques to practice on so she started painting on canvas and now that is her surface du jour. She encourages others to follow their passion. She laughs and says, A lot of people would like to paint but they are scared of it. Theres nothing to be afraid of. Its not like making an atomic bomb. n 1999 Kristin Bowen was getting married. She knew that her wedding would cement a wonderful partnership with her husband, Fred Bowen, but little did she know it would also launch a glorious new business, PlaceTile Designs. Fourteen years later, marriage and business are booming. Chances are you have heard about PlaceTile Designs on the Food Network, HGTV or read about it in The Atlanta Constitution, O: The Oprah Magazine, The Washington Post, Good Housekeeping, or scores of other periodicals. For those unfamiliar with PlaceTile Designs, Kristin, designer and owner explains how her idea took flight. I wanted to dress my wedding tables with something unusual that would not only serve as a place card, but as a wedding favor. I wanted a guest card that could be written on and erased.. A recyclable memento. I approached an artist who did custom ceramic tiles for kitchens. We worked together, improvising a standing tile. We decorated the clay place cards with my wedding motif. Our first efforts were a bit rough, but perfect for the wedding setting. In fact, the markers were such a hit some guests were pocketing their neighbors tiles. One of Kristins aunts was a caterer. She asked her niece to make some for her business. Another aunt was a florist. She ordered larger tiles to use for table markers. Other guests wanted them for special occasions. he Bascom Center for the Visual Arts offers an amazing array of first-rate exhibitions and educational opportunities, but word is spreading that you can design your own programs there. Thankfully, Joan Ussery listened to her friends, who recommended The Bascom and its customized art classes to her. She enjoyed her Art by Appointment session with Ceramics Program Coordinator Frank Vickery so much that she signed up for the Silicon Bronze Casting class in October. I am also interested in the Digital and Photoshop Photography class, Joan says. I will continue with classes whenever I can. Joan first heard about The Bascom during a visit to the area five years ago. She and her husband, David, retired executives who reside in Destin, Florida, during the winter, went to the Visitors Center to look at things to do in Highlands and discovered information about The Bascom. I loved the size and easy access, plus the fact that exhibitions change frequently, Joan says. Friends told her about Sip and Stroke, the popular painting class for all levels in which participants recreate a well-known painting while enjoying wine and the company of friends and fellow painters. Joan has completed two of these sessions and plans to join more. The classes are always fun and informative, she says, and you actually produce something that you can keep; that is so special! As an art enthusiast, Joan likes a range of art in all media, so the variety of art on display and offered in classes at The Bascom makes it even more attractive to her and a host of others. Mostly, The Bascom is what I call user-friendly. It is perfect if you just want to experience beautiful art, sculpture, whatever, as a visitor, she adds. hough his 32nd season just wrapped up, HighlandsCashiers Chamber Music Festival Artistic Director William Ransom is relishing his preparations for the 2013 season. What a great summer -- Our 32nd season literally flew by, from our Martinis and Mozart @ Wolfgangs in May to our final Cabaret Concert at the Playhouse in September. In between, we had incredible performances by friends old and new including Festival debuts by the Grammy awardwinning Parker Quartet; the dynamic duo of Julie and David Coucheron; young violinist Lexi Preucil; violist Jennifer Stumm; pianist Elena Cholakova; saxophonist Leo Saguiguit; and flutist Tony Reiss and clarinetist Roeland Hendrikx from Europe, he says. And favorites the Eroica Trio and Vega Quartet, violinist Bill Preucil, and jazzmaster Gary Motley were only a few of our musicians sharing their amazing talents with us again. Next season is coming together and I have no doubt that in the fall of 2014, we will once again be saying That was the best Festival ever! Here is a sneak peak at only some of the exciting programs to look forward to in 2014 -- mark your calendars now!
Beethovens Fifth will open the season on June 27 -- including his 5th cello Sonata, his 5th violin Sonata, and yes, his Fifth Symphony -- performed by an orchestra of 20 fingers and four feet at one piano by myself and Gloria Chien, star protg of New Yorks Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Centers Artistic Directors. Star cellist Edward Arron will make his Festival debut; and we will offer a very special program, The Poets Love and Life, featuring tenor Brad Howard singing Schumanns heartbreakingly beautiful Dichterliebe interspersed with readings by Aspen-based poet Bruce Berger reading from his own musical works. The Eroica Trio will be back, and their cellist Sara will stay with us and lead a group of six cellists in CelloMania. Jazz meets Classics will be back with Sax in the Mountains; and the Coucherons will dazzle us with Musical Fireworks over the July 4th weekend. The Parker and Vega Quartets will join us again, and our final Gala on August 3 will feature the Festival Chamber Orchestra with star of stage and screen (The Black Swan) Tim Fain as violin soloist. Patricia Racette portrays the tempestuous diva Floria Tosca in Luc Bondys production of Puccinis enduring favorite. Roberto Alagna sings Toscas lover, the painter Cavaradossi, and George Gagnidze is the corrupt, lustful Scarpia. Riccardo Frizza conducts Puccinis sweeping, dramatic tale of murder, lust, and political intrigue. Conductor is Riccardo Frizza. Four-time Grammy winner David Holt will perform with Josh Goforth at PAC at 8:00 P.M. Friday, November 29. Holt is a musician, storyteller, historian, television host, and entertainer, dedicated to performing and preserving traditional American music and stories. He plays 10 acoustic instruments and has released numerous award winning recordings of traditional mountain music and southern folktales. Holt is well-known for his television and radio series. He is host of public televisions Folkways, a North Carolina
program that takes the viewer through the Southern Mountains visiting traditional craftsmen and musicians. David also currently hosts the PBS series Great Scenic Railway Journeys. He served as host of The Nashville Networks Fire on the Mountain, Celebration Express and American Music Shop. David can also be seen as a musician in the George Clooney film, O Brother Where Art Thou? In 2002, Doc Watson and David won two Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Folk Recording, a collection of songs and stories reflecting Doc Watsons inspiring life story. Pumpkin Puree and Applesauce

Homemade Pumpkin Puree Ingredients: 3- to 4-pound pumpkin 1 cup water Preheat the oven to 350 F. Cut your pumpkin in half (or ask a man to be useful and do it.) Clean the seeds and the guts out. Place pumpkin halves face down into a large dish. Add water to the bottom of the dish. Bake for one hour and 15 minutes or until pumpkin flesh is soft and easy to scoop. To make a zinc-rich snack, you can wash the seeds and gently roast them on a dry frying pan, turning them sporadically, until they begin to lightly brown. Scoop the pumpkin flesh out, leaving the outer shell behind. Put the soft flesh into a blender or food processor. Blend, pulsing until the pure is smooth. Strain through a cheesecloth or nut bag to remove excess moisture. Store in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to three days or in the freezer for up to three months. Homemade Sugar-Free Applesauce Ingredients 8 apples - peeled, cored and chopped 1 1/2 cups water 1 tsp. ground cinnamon In a saucepan, combine apples, water and cinnamon. Cover, and cook over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, or until apples are soft. Allow to cool, then mash with a potato masher. Store in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to three days or in the freezer for up to three months.

had an interesting conversation with a customer recently. He told me the wine he liked, but I didnt have that particular wine. Based on his suggestion, I recommended a new alternative, he tasted and loved it. While I was pouring, I noticed he looked a bit distressed and he soon asked if I minded if he poured his own wine. I offered no objection and he gave a visible sigh of relief. He said he likes to pour his own wine and some reactions have made him uncomfortable. He thanked me for not correcting his pronunciation, not judging his wine knowledge and generally not talking down to him. Wine is something to be enjoyed by all, frivolously or seriously, neither deserving more or less respect. Too many wine organizations encourage their members to believe that this is the best Merlot or Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. Drink what you like, the way you like it and dont apologize. eople have been writing WASH ME in the dust on my cars rear window and on my dining room table for years. I ignored the messages. When dandelions and crabgrass took root on the countertops, thats when I swung into action. But over time, allergies set in. I researched the causes: dust and pollen. Darn. The queen of denial had to start dusting. I read further, and for all of its bad press, dust can be pretty interesting, in a creepy kind of way. Did you know that common ordinary house dust often contains burnt meteorite particles? Meteorites, for goodness sakes. Im breathing in Uranus. No wonder I am sneezing. Those cosmic specks swirl together with pollen, skin bits, animal dander, hair, and, shiver, gnarly little dust mites. Ewww. And what do dust mites eat? Skin bits. But thats not the worst of it. What goes in a dust mite, must come out of a dust mite. Yep, mite poo is a substantial part of the dust bowl we laughingly call my house. Its a microscopic disaster area in here. I wonder if FEMA has a special emergency relief program for dust flooding. Dust is a growing
epidemic wherever there is land and air. It led one of Highlands more famous residents, poet and musician Sydney King Russell, to wax poetic on the subject: Agatha Morley all her life grumbled at dust like a good wife Six feet under the earth she lies with dust at her feet
and dust in her eyes. Agatha lost the dust war, but Russell lived to tell the tale. He was a New Yorker, but he enjoyed extended stays in our town over a span of three decades until he passed in 1976 not from dustrelated causes, I hasten to add. He wrote his very first poem at the age of seven and was published by the age of 14. His work was
frequently published in Good Housekeeping, The New Yorker, American Mercury, and many other periodicals. Quite a few of his poems were selected for first-rate anthologies including Americas Best Loved Poems. He also co-edited Voices Magazine. Alas, there is no poetic justice for dust mites, however. As far as my countertops go, dust and I must bring our differences to the table. Well, sadly, dust already has. But we need to meet each other halfway. For my part, Ill live in a large glass dome, and Ill exfoliate with a Hoover every morning. In the meantime, Ill curl up with a collection of Russells poetry and read Midsummer, a short, nostalgic selection about unrequited love, and pray that meteorites will not pound me. here is an unusual couple moved to a nearby shaped tombstone in area of South Carolina where the 5th row of graves at they successfully raised to the Lower Zachary Cemetery adulthood one son and two in Cashiers. Susie, I wish you had been with me yesterday. I saw the most wonderful house. I know youre planning to build and you would have loved this one. The exterior was poplar bark shingles with sandstone walks and porches. The copper gutters and cedar shake shingle roof offered true mountain elegance. I loved the random-width antique oak flooring and all the custom features. My eyes darted from one eye-catching element to another. The clear pine paneling of the Great Room glowed from the fires warm embers. Natures beauty permeated the room through French doors that led to a large stone terrace. Roy focused on the grill area and the beautifully landscaped yard (Tate Landscapings handiwork) while I was drawn to the large covered seating area with fireplace and the eye-catching views. Its hard to name a favorite room. island brought out the chef in me. Flanking the double pocket doors that separate the kitchen from the dining room are floor-to-ceiling pantries. Storage galore and the upper cabinets featured the most gorgeous inset oak doors. The kitchens custom cabinetry looks like fine furniture. I was enamored with the granite countertops in a leather finish so rich, but durable. The top-of-the-line appliances included a gas range, dual dishwashers, two ovens and more. You would love the Keeping Room too. Theres a game table for a hand of canasta or rook, comfortable seating near a fireplace and a bar. All comfy, cozy, yet very eyecatching. Just around the corner is the back staircase, a half bath with a large farm sink just perfect for bathing the dogs. The owners suite is tucked away in a private corner of the main floor. The large bedroom accommodates a king bed with a sitting area and terrace access. The adjacent bath with dual vanities features a tub and separate shower

plus walk-in closets. There is even a private office/library when business wont wait. The second floor offers four large guest suites. There are small balconies overlooking the mountains and valleys. Your grandchildren would love the large third floor bonus room -- a perfect hideaway. Custom finishes throughout the house lend an air of elegance while still providing livability. Jim would have homed in on the geothermal wells that support the HVAC system and the hot water and the Kolbe doors and windows. I know how he
is fixated on eco-friendly design elements. I learned that this custom home was built by Lupoli Construction. I checked around. They have been building in the area for the past 30 years. With 441N on the left, this current irrigation ditch may have been the continuation of Darling Spring and could be the famed Herberts Spring.
long the path north from the head of a southern tributary of the Savannah River it is not half a mile to a spring whose waters run through the Middle Towns of the Cherokee Nation, and from there on to the Mississippi River. This fountain is called Herberts Spring, after John Herbert, a former Commissioner of Indian Affairs for South Carolina. It was common for strangers to drink from it to quench their thirst, gratify their curiosity, and have it to say that they had drunk from the French waters. Some of the Carolina traders went into the Cherokee Nation with the intent of staying only a short time. But after exceeding their planned stay they reported that whosoever drank from Herberts Spring could not possibly leave the Cherokee Nation for seven years. James Adair, 1775. To the best of my knowledge, no attempt to rediscover Herberts Spring has been put into print since Adair wrote his description of it almost two and a half centuries ago. I do believe that Adair provides us enough landmarks to at least come close today, however. vicinity of the Blue Ridge Dividethe only place where a tributary of the Savannah is found within a half mile of a tributary of the Little Tennesseeis well-known. The path ran through present-day Clayton where it branched off towards the Cherokee towns on the Hiwassee and Valley rivers. The north-south branch proceeded along Stekoa Creek (Adairs tributary of the Savannah River) through the gap between Black Rock and Hogback mountains. East of 441 N, the Little Tennessees first tributary of any sizeBlacks Creekappears in the northern end of the fields to the north of Mountain City. Blacks Creek seems much too large to be referred to as a spring, however. Despite the fact that its waters now flow into Stekoa Creek and on to the Savannah, Darling Spring might be a better match for Herberts Spring. Darling Spring currently flows entirely to the south of Dotson Street. But it is worth considering that the roadbed of Dotson Street has been raised a few feet and that in the past Darling Spring may have continued north into the channel that now appears to be an irrigation ditch but that may have been a permanent stream bed in the past.

hen Benjamin Franklin saw the bald eagle on the badge of the Society of the Cincinnati Medal, he thought it was a turkey. (Id say its more like a Wampoo Pigeon Boobywith ears. What do you think?) When Franklin discovered the bird on the seal was really an eagle, he began writing about what our new nations national bird should be. His choice was the turkey, a true native of America. He said if any redcoat bird wandered into the barnyard, the turkey, a bit silly and full of himself would take it on and send it flying. The eagle, on the other hand, was an opportunist bird, waiting for the hard-working fishing
hawk to snap up a bass for his family. The eagle would launch from his perch and snatch the catch from the poor fishing hawks mouth. Hmmm. Think of what some of our esteemed Congressional leaders have done today, sitting on their high perches. Perhaps the eagle was the most accurate choice after all, though we seem to have a few opportunist turkeys doing their share of gobbling the nations assets. In the end, the real contender for national bird was probably the diligent fishing hawk. The turkey may not have become the nations symbol, but it definitely won Thanksgivings main course contest. Not much
of a contest. Have you seen an eagle drumstick? Kidding. Speaking of bird size, todays domesticated turkeys weigh about twice as much as the Pilgrim birds, which explains why ours dont fly with eagles. We eat roughly 535 million pounds of turkey on Thanksgiving. In Franklins time, Thanksgiving wasnt even a holiday, though the concept of setting aside a day of thanks was under consideration. While Franklin favored the idea, Thomas Jefferson was strongly opposed, saying to set aside one day for thanksgiving was a complete waste of a day. Franklin, rarely known for his subtlety, nicknamed the turkey Tom, a little jab at
Jefferson. The name stuck. And to this day, once a year, figuratively speaking, Ben roasts Tom. So when you sit down to your annual feast this year, think of all the turkey you have enjoyed during your lifetime. And celebrate the first turkeys to have ever been pardoned, Richard Nixon andno, no, no, May and Flower on Thanksgiving Day of 2007. As President Bush said, Im pleased to announce the winning names. They are May and Flower. Theyre certainly better than the names the Vice President suggested, which was Lunch and Dinner. Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone. Gobble good!

Why is Belly Fat so Dangerous?

The preeminent danger of abdominal fat is that it becomes visceral fat, which surrounds and affects our organs within the abdominal cavity, especially the liver and heart. Evidence now shows that this specific layer of fat is actually metabolically active and produces specialized immune cells called cytokines. These are inflammatory cells that circulate into the liver through the portal vein deep within the abdominal cavity. This process creates greater quantities of cholesterol, more bad than good, and puts additional stress on the heart. Over time, this inflammatory process creates a situation called insulin resistance, which disrupts the bodys way of using blood glucose efficiently for energy. Left unattended, the body moves into diabetes II which can eventually shut down the production of insulin. But even though this is a deep fat (not the subcutaneous fat that sits just below the skin, relatively easy changes made with consistency and patience can have significant impact on this dangerous belly fat. Regular exercise involving Interval training can reduce the amount of visceral fat over time. A few more steps complete the picture of reducing these life threatening diseases caused by a layer of fat! Eat lots of fruits, vegetables and moderate amounts of lean proteins, and cut way back on sugar and processed foods. It can be that simple! Interval training involves only a 20 to 30 minute workout. Warm up for three minutes and then increase your intensity to as much as you can do for one minute. Then continue for three minutes at a moderate intensity. Repeat this process six to eight times. This regimen, at least four times per week, combined with healthy eating and drinking 64 ounces of water daily, will help to reduce the belly fat and increase your health over time. Patience is a virtue in this process -- stay committed to yourself and you will see progress. Check with your doctor before you embark on an intense exercise routine.

Stretching Your IRA Beneficiaries

across one or perhaps two generations. Rather than a product such as a particular type of IRA stretching is a distribution strategy that can be applied to any type of IRA. Under the strategy, beneficiaries can make withdrawals from the inherited account over years or decades. Under the stretch strategy, required minimum distributions (RMDs) are calculated based on the beneficiarys life expectancy. For example, say a 60-year-old man inherits an IRA from his father. He can schedule distributions over his 25year life expectancy, as determined by the IRS single life expectancy table. The first year after inheriting the IRA, this beneficiary would be required to withdraw only one-twenty-fifth of the accounts value. The next year, he would withdraw one-twenty-fourth of the accounts value, and so on. The appeal of the stretch provision is that the longer the beneficiarys life expectancy, the smaller the amount he or she must withdraw each year allowing the bulk of the funds in that IRA to continue to grow tax-deferred. The stretch strategy wont have any implications for your IRA during your lifetime. Stretching can be used only by the beneficiaries of an inherited account. You can take a few important steps to prepare your account for potential stretching: 1. Check the details of your IRA custodial agreement. Most IRA custodians will allow beneficiaries to use the stretch provision, but some may require faster payouts. 2. Choose beneficiaries carefully and indicate them on your IRA beneficiary form. This may be the most important step in the stretch process. It is important to understand that if you name your estate as an IRA beneficiary your estate has no life expectancy, and therefore cant use the stretch provision. Instead, your heirs might have to withdraw all the money from that account within five years, per IRS rules. Likewise, spouses typically dont need to use a stretch strategy because IRS rules allow spouses to roll inherited accounts into their own IRAs. 3. Educate your heirs. Make sure they understand how to enact a stretch strategy. Most important, they should appreciate the intent of the gift and grasp the benefits of not simply cashing out the account. Bridal Veil Falls is the first of many beautiful waterfalls in the Cullasaja Gorge near Highlands. There are many large waterfalls you can walk behind, but Bridal Veil Falls is one of the few you can actually drive your car behind! ovember is a time of family gatherings and magnificent feasts, and a month when we pause and give thanks for all of the good and bountiful blessings we have. A horn of plenty, indeed, and how incredibly blessed all of us are who live in this little slice of paradise in Western North Carolina. And when it comes to our pets, Im not sure who is more blessed our four-legged family members, or we as humans for knowing the greatest of unconditional love from our feline and canine companions. After all, it is impossible to love our animals too much. Or is it? As a matter of fact, yes...we can love our pets too much. In this month of great bounty and feast, when it comes to feeding our pets, too much of a good thing is not a good thing. Obesity in household pets is an epidemic in this country, and it mirrors nearly exactly the startling rise of obesity we are seeing in children. According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 53 percent of adult dogs and 55 percent of cats in the U.S. are obese or overweight. Compounding the
problem is that many pet owners do not realize their animals are carrying too many extra pounds 22 percent of dog owners and 15 percent of cat owners said their pets weight was normal, when it was actually overweight or obese. An overweight or obese companion animal runs a higher risk of arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, certain cancers, and heart and respiratory disease many of the same conditions that afflict obese humans. According to the Purina Lifespan Study, obesity takes two years or more off a pets life. Its an example of loving someone to death. Let us be thankful for our many blessings this November, including the blessing of unconditional love from the animals who are part of our family. And let us cherish and safeguard that unconditional love by protecting our pets health with the two best ways to prevent pet obesity plenty of exercise and proper nutrition. lthough we should give thanks all year long, tradition has us expressing it in November when Thanksgiving vacation and turkey dinner are prominent in our thoughts. So Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to follow tradition this month and express its many thanks: BBBS of Highlands gives thanks for all the support its received since 2004 that has enabled us to touch the lives of over 200 children in the community. BBBS of Cashiers gives thanks for the community support which made it possible to have a great first year in operation. Thank you to all the wonderful families that welcome our assistance in enriching their childs life. To the community volunteers, the Bigs who give their time and talents to mentor our children, helping them explore their interests or sparks, and search for their potential within. s a result of profits from Laurel Garden Clubs Kitchen Tours, grants are funded twice per year. One of the recent grants was approved to assist in funding of the North Carolina Bartram Trail educational signage. Funds were recently requested from The North Carolina Bartram Trail Society to purchase and install 20 interpretive plant, wildflower, and tree signs to educate hikers and other visitors about the native plants in these areas. Signs will be located on the trail from Jones Gap to White Rock. They will be built by Gooder Graphics in keeping with other approved forest service signs: a standing post type with an angled sign at the top. These funds are part of an ongoing Grants Initiative by Laurel Garden Club. Monies are requested that further the interest of horticulture and conservation during two grant cycles that end January 30 and June 30 of each year. These particular grant funds were matched by a private donor.
