Article Title: ________________The fish and the forest_______________________ Author/Source: ____By Scott M. Gende and Thomas P.Quinn_________________ While reading the article, highlight words or phrases that require definitions or clarifications What are the AUTHORs major ideas, concepts or key points? A: List the major ideas, concepts or key points- point by point Bears actually fertilize the forest. uneaten fish provide sustenance for an array of animals and plants. Salmon are a crucial resources for the bears. The death of adult salmon produce a large net flow of nutrients. Up to 70 percent of the nitrogen in the foliage of streamside shrubs and trees is of salmon origin Bears fertilize the forests by discarding partially eaten salmon carcasses. Bears consume about 25% of each captured salmon selectively eating the parts high in fat. Any action that reduces the number of salmon or bears will affect the nutrient flow.

B: Summarize the AUTHORs main point or idea- at LEAST 1-2 paragraphs The bears are endangered. We've got to make a difference because if we lose the bears, the forests will run out of nutrients, and if we run out of nutrients, life there in the forest, will be unsustainable and it will affect the rest of the creatures who live there and their habitats. It's all a chain reaction. Bears are essential for the life in the forest. We should also be taking care of the salmon since their essential too. I think that we could help the bears, including the forest & other wild life, by preserving the area and if we do help them it could only make their life better. We should not allow hunting, and help the bears to reproduce more.

C: Write a reaction paragraph to the article stating your own thoughts on the topic, using specific citations from the article to support your views I didnt know that salmons and bears were so important to our environment. if we dont have bears then the salmons wouldnt be able to provide nitrogen. Also without the salmons we wouldnt have nutrients. So i think we should protect our environment and keep these animals safe.
So What? The bears and the salmons should be kept safe. Says Who? By Scott M. Gende and Thomas P.Quinn What if..? The bears and salmons were extinc? many animals would die because ther e wouldnt be any nutrients. What Does This Remind Me Of? This reminds me of the ocean acidification because if we do something wrong it will still affect the environment.
