Week 3: Focus on Maps and Climate

Lesson: Flat Stanley Returns Objective: At the end of the lesson students will be able to write a thank you letter
without assistance. (Formal Assessment on writing) The will also learn about their Flat Stanleys adventure and see pictures.

Content Standards:
Social Studies California State Content Standards: A childes place in time and space 1.2 Students compare and contrast the absolute and relative locations of places and people and describe the physical and/or human characteristics of places. 1. Locate on maps and globes their local community, California, the United States, the 7 continents, and 4 oceans. 2. Compare the information that can be derived from a three-dimensional model to the information that can be derived from a picture of the same location. 3. Construct a simple map, using cardinal directions and map symbols. 4. Describe how location, weather, and physical environment affect the way people live, including the effects on their food, clothing, shelter, transportation, and recreation. Speaking and Listening: SL1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. a. Follow agreed-upon rules for discussion. SL2: Ask and answer questions about key details in a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media. a. Give, re-state, and follow simple two-step directions. SL4: Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas, and feelings clearly. a. Memorize and recite poems, rhymes and songs with expression. SL5: Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings. Writing: W1: Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state and opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure. W2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure. Language: L1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. a. Print all upper- and lowercase letters b. Use common, proper, and possessive nouns

Use frequently occurring conjunctions L2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English capitalization, punctuations, and spelling when writing. a. Materials:

Instructional Directions:
1. All the Flat Stanleys should have returned by now through cyberspace. There should be a letter and pictures that come back with the virtual Flat Stanley. 2. Go through each Flat Stanley letter and pictures with the students and have the student whose Flat Stanley is being presented to stand in front of the class during the presentation and have the student put the original Flat Stanley they created on the map of where he just come from. Have the student tell what climate the location has and what continent it is located on. Do this with each student and project. 3. Once all the projects have been presented, turn on the ELMO and show the students the following Google doc of a blank friendly letter. Tell the students that they will now write a thank you letter to their friend or family member from Flat Stanley. Once the students are finished with their letters they can scan and email the thank you letter to their family member or friend. Make sure to have student do the scanning and email.
