Challenge
John B. Long (JBLCo), located in Knoxville, Tennessee, is a worldclass supplier of innovative sampling systems and components, mine transportation & safety equipment, and related services to the bulk materials and mining industries. They produce a coal sampler. Functioning like a big spoon sitting on a shaft, it sweeps the conveyor, removing a section of coal for sampling. "We were experimenting with a new product and drive system," says Mark Calloway, Vice President of Marketing for J.B. Long. "We were experiencing heavy shock loads and heavy use. Shock was produced not only by the material pickup but also from the side load created by the material moving at speeds up to 1000 fpm. And we had to maintain cutter speeds of up to 200 inches per second through-flow. We have previously used reduction drives. We wanted to lower cost and get the same cutter speed."

Solution
"We decided to try the TorqLOC," says Mark. "Its keyless design would save the cost of keying a shaft. Unlike with a hollowbore shaft, the disassembly of the shaft is done outside the application. There are fewer moving parts, so assembly and maintenance time would be much lower, offering significant savings from a labor standpoint. And with fewer parts to break, we would increase our ease of operation."
