Jack O'Lantern Legend

Complete the story, using the Past Simple form of the verbs in brackets. The Irish brought the tradition of the Jack O'Lantern to America. But, the original Jack O'Lantern (be) not a pumpkin. The Jack O'Lantern legend goes back hundreds of years in Irish History. As the story goes, a man nicknamed Stingy Jack (be) a miserable, old drunk who (like) playing tricks on everyone: family, friends, his mother and even the Devil himself. According to the story, Stingy Jack (invite) the devil to have a drink with him. Stingy Jack (not want) to pay for his drink, so he (ask) the Devil to turn into a coin that Jack (can) use to buy their drinks. As soon as the Devil (do) so, Jack (decide) to keep the money and (put) it into his pocket next to a silver cross. So the Devil (not can) change back into his original form. Finally Jack (free) the Devil but he (make) the Devil promise him not to take his soul when he (die). Next year, Jack (trick) the Devil into climbing up an apple tree. Once the Devil (climb) up the apple tree, Stingy Jack quickly (place) crosses around the tree. The Devil (not can) get down the tree until the Devil (promise) not to bother him for ten more years. Many years later, when Jack finally (die), he (go) to the gates of Heaven, but Saint Peter (tell) that he had been too mean and too cruel, and had had a miserable life on earth. He wasnt allowed to enter heaven. He then (go) down to Hell. The Devil, upset by the tricks Jack had played on him, (keep) his promise and _________(allow) him to enter Hell. Now Jack was scared and (have) nowhere to go but to wander about forever in the darkness between heaven and hell. The only thing the Devil (give) him was an ember from the flames of Hell to help him light his way. Jack (place) the ember inside a turnip, one of his favorite foods which he always (carry) around with him whenever he (steal) one. Since that day, Stingy Jack has been roaming the earth without a resting place, lighting his way as he is going with his "Jack O'Lantern".
