REQUEST

FROM

KOREAN

MISSIONARIES

In February, Virginia planned to go to Korea for two weeks at the invitation of Korean missionaries (who paid her round trip air fare), to apeak to Korean women in prison and at the opening and closing sessions of the Tae3on Bible Seminary. Because of invitations to speak in churches in America and a reunion of Virginia's home church in California, she routed her trip to Korea via Los Angeles and Oregon.
Virginia completed the Korean tour having a wonderful time with the

Korean people through the invitation of the C.Y.Kims of Tae^on and by

the special invitation of Loretta and David Warner of the Rural Bible
Institute in southwest Korea. An invitation i s extended f o r J u l i u s and

Virginia to go there each year for one month to have Julius teach in the Bible colleges and Virginia to do women's prison work and to teach in several churches. That is on the agenda for 1987, Lord willing, when Julius has a monthly leave (part of January and February) from Japanese Universities.
JAPAN UNION CHURCH RECEIVES $1500

FOR CAGAYAN

VALLEY CHILDREN'S HOME

This gift came from the University Christian Church in Eugene, Oregon through Mrs. Macel Scovell, Outreach Chairman. She invited Virginia to
present the work to this International Church in Tokyo and they are putting this orphanage in their yearly budget. The Mayor of Sayama

City has a son who is a Christian and has done much in the past to ship medicines to the Philippines to help the tribal people. Dr. Tanaka, a member at Sayama Church of Christ, has introduced us to Mr. Hachida and we are working on securing TB medicines and antibiotics to be given
through our missionaries there.
JAPAN PROJECT CONTINUES

After Virginia and daughter Laurie were in the Philippines, we continued our pro3ect to encourage Japanese to help the Philippine Churches in their projects. The political situation made i t impossible for a group of Japanese to go to the Philippines and do something as co-workers with Philippine Christians. Family members of Japanese interested in going feared to allow them to go at this time.

PRAYER REQUEST FOR DANA FLEENOR

In October 1985, Juliua and Virginia received word from their daughter, Dana, that she had a suspicious lump that had been growing since October. At Irvine Medical Center of the University of California
(near the Los Angeles area), the oncology department head. Dr. Wile

said, "This is a tumor and we can only tell if cancerous or benign by

removal and biopsy". Dana, who has been substitute teaching until she
gets her permanent job in September, made the decision to wait a month, praying this would heal without surgery. She had no medical insurance.
APRIL 12, 1986

At 3:30 a.m., Julius and Virginia received a phone call in Tokyo saying
a rather large cone shaped ductule infiltrating carcinoma had been removed. The doctor was suggesting a total mastectomy. By God^s grace, Virginia was able to secure a ticket and a seat on a plane out of Tokyo that night at 5:45 p.m. It was a holiday, there was a train strike on some lines in Japan and the banks were closed, yet God made a way. Nobue, one of the Christians in the Sayama Church, not knowing
anything about our financial need, came running to our house. She had taken all the money she had in the house <50,000 yen which is equal to $275.00) to exchange in the airport for my expenses. She said, "This is very l i t t l e , but my whole household is Christian except for my

hxraband because American Christians sent you^o Japan. Today my husband said, I am going to church tomorrow to hear Mr. Fleenor 9peak". Nobue is the daughter of Mr. Haga who (he received Christ as his Saviour three years before) died of cancer. The week before, our son Stephen had preached at the Haga House on Sunday night service where 80 people were in attendance. Nobue's husband has been most willing to
have Bible studies, testimonies, preaching, and Christian.concerns there in the Haga House where he is now the head of the house. His two
sons are Christian.

April 25,

1986

After many consultations with doctors at the University of California Medical Center, i t was decided that Dana should have the lymph nodes removed by Dr. Wile for biopsy and radium catheter implants for 36 hours to receive 3000 rads of radiation treatment. By May 1 the drain was removed from under her arm. This is not disfiguring as radical
surgery would have been.
GOOD NEWS

There are no cancer cells in the lymph nodes. Starting Hay 12, Dana began treatment which was to run five to six weeks and a total of 7000
units of radiation.

May 23,

1986

Virginia reported that Dana has mononucleosis. Please pray for Dana that her body will be able to handle the treatments needed. Please send her words of encouragement. Her address is Dana Fleenor, Futter Mills, Apt. 82, 1450 East Grove Avenue, Orange, CA 92665

FURLOUGH

PLANS CHANGED

Dana had to move out of her apartment ahe was sharing with two other girla the day before surgery. Virginia has stayed in California and found an apartment for Dana. She will also help during this time of radiation as Dana cannot work and do substitute teaching. During this
time, Dana will finish her l a s t t e s t on "U.S. Constitutional

Amendments" and do interviews for a permanent school position. She has been doing substitute teaching on a waiver of this one last requirement
for her permanent credential in California.

Julius and Virginia had planned on furlough July through September 20, 1986 as Laurie, youngest daughter, will go to Pacific Christian College

and Fullerton Junior College.

She graduates from the missionary school

(Virginia will miss her

Christian Academy in Japan on June 6

graduation). They plan to help Laurie get her driver'^s license and a car so she can take both the cosmetology course and live in the

Christian College dorm and take six units there during her first year in the states. Lord willing, they will be in California as a family by
July to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary and visit some supporters and living link churches on the coast and possibly Indiana.

JAPAN
SUMMER CAMP

WORK

EXPANDING

Stephen (our son) and his wife have been missionaries to Japan for 15 years and they will carry on the summer camp work in Karuizawa. We plan to use $1000 of mission funds with his mission funds to do some bath and shower repairs in the camp building to make i t more
functional.

SAYAMA

CHURCH

Virginia and Julius live in the second floor apartment over the Sayama Church building. Lord willing, we hope to tear out walls downstairs to nake the main meeting room twice the size and make only two rooms for a church office and guest room and multipurpose church activity room.
UNIVERSITY TEACHERS AND STUDENTS

Julius^ ministry with University teachers and students continues. He turned down a chance to teach in the Private High School, unless he could have a weekly Saturday release time Bible class for students. The school approved i t . They have also agreed that Julius could have early time off by July 1 from teaching even though the school continues to July 20. Japanese schools prefer missionary English teachers because
of their character and faithfulness to contract.

He reaches 900 Japanese students weekly in one high school and two Universities besides preaching at Sayama and holding meetings and
seminars in doctor's home. This has taken most of Julius' time this

past year. He also uses his time for Bible study and for Japanese preparation to preach and teach.

WHAT

WE

NEED

HOST

Prayer for wisdom aa to projects and ministry. Japan is an open door and i t has been 40 years since their new constitution gave them religious freedom. Pray with us for a new empowering of God's Church in Japan.
Praise God that He will supply all our needs. Our needs are always spiritualy emotional, and physical. The new dollar to yen exchange means that the former $1000 buys only $750 in year, but the inflation of the yen remains. This is why Julius and Stephen both must do some teaching in the Universities. Pray they will be used to win students and professionals to Jesus Christ as we must be "tent missionaries'* at
times.

Pray we have wisdom for decisions and live daily in faith in the fact and promise of Matthew 6:32-34.

ACCIDENT

Julia, our oldest daughter, was employed by Uniden in Indianapolis. On July 3, Virginia spoke at some length with Julia on the phone and cautioned her as she was planning to drive to Seattle leaving on the 4th of July. Julia's sons were visiting their Japanese father in Tokyo for the summer. Julia's last words to Virginia were "Don't worry about me, mother. Hy heavenly Father will watch over me and if I do have an accident, God will see I get help to the best
possible hospital and doctor".

State Trooper was on the scene in two minutes. The first three cars to stop were driven by a doctor, a nurse, and a paramedic. Trooper Jeff Kidd had a plastic neck support in the car and i t was carefully put on her neck and the
ambulance took her to Hudson Hospital where she was stabilized and sent on to the St. Paul Ramsey Trauma Center which is considered one of the best Trauma
Centers in the United States.

She was put in a "halo-traction" and was intubed through her nose with a breathing respirator and a tube for feeding into her stomach. She was severely bruised, but had no internal injuries and the CAT scan showed no blood clots or brain hemmorhage, but she, of course, had brain swelling. We secured the best orthopedic surgeon and neuro-surgeon we could find. On the 10th, she had a piece of hip bone removed to replace the 7th vertebrae of her neck which was broken in four places and just about piercing her spinal cord.

JULIANS TESTIMONY TO THE DOCTORS.

At the special Family Conference on Tuesday,

August 12, the doctors said that any one of Julia's fractures could have rendered her paralyzed from the neck down. Her mental tests shows her thinking and decision making to be clear. Each day she improves so rapidly, all the doctors and therapists are amazed at her attitude. She said these words at the family conference with the doctors, "I do not consider myself to be a better person than others in this hospital who have been left paralyzed and injured
and in a coma from less trauma. But, I have learned again that Code's grace is

given without our deserving it. I understand as never before God's Love and grace and I want to live my life with the same forgiving and loving grace that
God has shown to me".

Both Daito University

and Joaai Medical Dental college allow him to use the Bible in teaching discussion groups. He has given bi-lingual English-Japanese Gideon Testaments to all his students. A private high school asked him to teach hours a week and two of the Japanese English Teachers have gone with him epeciol Bible diecueeione with the Joeai Dental College teachere in evening. He touches 800 lives a week in these classes.

This income has made i t possible for us to atay in Japan. With the dollars devalued $1.00 to 150 from last year's $1.00 to 250 yen, we find our U.S. Mission funds and salary have been automatically cut 40^. WE are thankful for your continued support and prayerfully intend to stay and work in Japan at any cost as long as we have a ministry and a provision. We cannot be on a missionary visa unless the major portion of our income comes from the United
States.

VISITING
WE HAVE HAD A MAJOR

THE CHURCHES
MINISTRY IN

IN JAPAN
THEIR ESTABLISHMENT

Immediately the Nishi Arai Church invited us to come and apeak and have an afternoon fellowship dinner with them. Julius preached on Job and Virginia gave a testimony concerning their daughters, whom they have known from childhood. We were delighted to find two new young married couples in active
service there s i n c e we visited last.

We went up north to the KAMO Church to visit and encourage them. We were very delighted to see that the young misionaries Joel and Debby Likins, who came from Ohio to be self-supporting ^issioh^ies, were v^rRing^ well with the church. Joel was born in Japan and lived 15 years of his life here. His wife plays the organ and the entire church worship has been greatly vitalized by their ministry. Joel studies Japanese and also preaches Japanese sermons twice a month. One Japanese man also preaches and Mis Aono, the child evangelist, leads one service a month. The day we were there a new man came to church. This young married Japanese man spent over an hour in conversation

answering the new man'^s questions about Jesus Christ and the Church. This Japanese Christian with a smile and enthusiastic manner told how Jesus Christ had changed his life and given him new hope and direction. We were
encouraged.

We spent the afternoon with Bill and Akemi Bellew of SANJO, the next town. Bill married Akemi while in the Navy and since he was a graduate of Cincinnati

Bible Seminary, he was seeking a place to serve in Japan. He and Akemi opened an English School and have Bible studies and are doing missionary work in SANJO, her home town. I t was Bill who helped Joel and Debby secure English jobs. We talked of future hopes and plans for evangelism and are praying for
continual open doors and growth.

It is good to have them here and until January, Virginia is limiting herself to ^ust two Japanese Bible classes, one in the home and one at the Haga house and traveling with Julius when he visits the various
churches to preach.

This month we will have a two-day evangelistic meeting. The main ob3ective is for each Christian to bring as many non-Christian friends and family members as possible.

Julius opened another Home Bible study for high school students in the home of Sayama Church of Christ Christians, the Kaides. They have a Saturday evening tutoring school in their home and after bringing one student to church, a discussion evolved and Julius ended up beginning this weekly outreach. The Kaides have another Tutoring school in a building they bought located about one hour to the north. They have asked Virginia to prepare a special Christmas evangelistic message for the 25 students there and help in giving a Christmas Party there for the student and their friends.
