produce market report November 5, 2013

Good Buys:
We continue to see great demand and high quality as well as good prices for acorn, butternut and spaghetti squash. Local bosc pears continue to be a big item for us from our friends at Bear Mountain Orchards. Dont forget Bartlett, comice, forelle, red and seckle pears which are here in abundance, as well. One of your best buys this week will be green cabbage. The quality is great and we will be seeing bargain prices for the next week or so. Honeycrisp apples are going strong; the taste and texture is unforgettable and the price is right. Great prices this week on Florida ruby red grapefruit.

Celery is a very good buy right now with plentiful quantities of substantial stalks of crispy product. Asparagus continues to be a good buy in all sizes. This wont be the case the closer we get to Thanksgiving so treat your guests now!! We are stocking local gala apples in 100 and 125 Ct. packs from VA, WVA and MD. Yellow squash and zucchini are coming in nicely from Florida now. We still have plenty of nice pumpkins, gourds -both mini and regular size and corn fodder. We are getting a lot of calls for the new shipments of pomegranates, persimmons and quince from California. Prices are coming down nicely.

Strawberries are finally more plentiful with great quality out of Santa Maria. Availability of Stem strawberries is still hit or miss. Raspberries are excellent out of California with no availability issues. Sugar content is great and the price is steady. Blackberries are all out of Mexico and the prices are up a bit the sugar level is really good. Blueberries out of South America (Peru and Argentina) are on their way down in price with good quality. Broccoli and broccoli crowns have started to decline in price.

California is finished for avocados so we are sourcing from Mexico entirely now. The ripening process is longer. This is the time of year to bring in fresh cranberries. The price is coming down. The great lemon debacle is finally behind us with all sizes available and prices evening out. Navel oranges have arrived to replace the valencias. Mangos from Brazil, the Tommy Atkins variety are here. Brussels sprouts are very active with high demand. Expect to pay higher prices through Thanksgiving and Christmas for this popular item. Red and yellow peppers are active with red being the tougher of the two to source right now. Curly parsley is expensive right now but Italian parsley has more moderate pricing.

Watch
Cantaloupe remains on the tight side although not as crazy as it had been. Starting to see more sizes but prices are higher. Honeydews are coming out of Arizona and Mexico and the prices are better than cantaloupe. The eggplant market is very active. Prices are okay this week, but we expect a big spike in the next week or so. This is due to the transition from Georgia to Florida. Cauliflower supplies remains tight.
