Question 5: Pn. Ramlah decides to tell story entitle Si Tanggang to her pupils.

Taking into consideration the elements below, explain how she can use them to explore the story. Intellectual Moral/personality Aesthetic values Linguistics

Intellectual
As teachers, using stories in the classroom would enable the students to think critically on the story selected. For example the story entitle Si Tanggang has lots of moral values that can be deliverd to the students. The story backgrounds of Si Tanggang with various issues covered wold definitely offer very rich stimulations for their young minds. As we all know the story Si Tanggang is a about a man who turned into a stone because he detest his parents and got cursed by his mother, so from this story the students can make connections and relate with their real life. They will learn that detest or not being good with our parents is a bad thing and they will take lesson from this story. In order to develop students; intellectual skills, teachers should conduct a class discussion and try position ourselves as a facilitator of the discussion. Pn. Ramlah might give a situation or a question regarding the story Si Tanggang for example she can ask is it good to treat our parents as what Tanggang did?. Teacher has to let them discuss among them and ask them to give brief explanation. This discussion will be learner-centered session and teacher has to try control the discussion.

Moral/Personality
The story Si Tanggang somehow can help students develop th eir moral/personality because this story in some way related to their everyday lives and scenes happened in this story might happen to others as well. So, at their age young learners should be exposed to different faade of life. This story helps them to discuss both sad events as well as good sides in the story. By using story as a opening to classroom discussion can be a great help as they will be sharing ways on how to make decisions during difficult situations. During the classroom discussion, teachers are

advised not to interrupt and allow students to express their opinions on the issues in the story Si Tanggang. Teachers should facilitate them on sharing their experiences and help them decide the most suitable decisions based on the issues chatted.

Aesthetic Values
In exploring the story, one of the elements that need to be explored is aesthetic values. An aesthetic value is the appreciation of beauty and art for children personal development. The sense of fun and enjoyment of activities that provide the vital motivation are needed to keep them focus in class. The activities that can be done to explore the story in order to develop pupils aesthetic values are :

1. Thank You card for their mothers saying thanks for and sorry for all their wrongdoings. o Interesting activity that allow pupils to design the card based on their own creativity o They can produce any shapes that they want and decorate as beautiful as they can draw, colour, illustrate some vocab (mother, flower) o Can nurture creative skills among them

2. Performance such as role-playing in class o Ask volunteers to come to the front and act based on the script that teacher had prepared o To make the session enjoyable and meaningful o To make them understand the story well

3. Hypothesizing o Ask them to make their own hypothesis based on what they have heard what are their opinions about the story o Nurture their creative and critical thinking skills among them o Train them to think out of the box

Linguistics
In exploring the story, Linguistic element need to be focused too as it brings benefits to the pupils. Stories bring more effective influence on literacy development when pupils are given the opportunities to engage in conversation about the story. There are some techniques that can be used : 1. Listen to the story and read along o Children learn to read by hearing stories and by reading aloud by themselves o Teacher can be the model in showing them the fluency and correctness in using English language how to pronounce words correctly o Then teacher can explain certain linguistic features and also unfamiliar words to the pupils

2. Answer simple who, what, when, where and why questions about the story o Teacher can guide them on how to answer the wh- questions correctly o Increases their knowledge of sentence structure
