NINE THEMES OF DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP BY MIKE RIBBLE

1. Digital Access: Having the opportunity to
use and access technology.

Keep yourself safe

All schools should have filtering software to help protect students from any content that is inappropriate or obscene. They also try to help students from identity theft and online predators. If the Internet is completely open at schools then there would be more access to inappropriate sites by students. All schools receiving federal funding must have an Acceptable Use Policy. This is a policy that schools must develop for the use of technology. It sets the guidelines for students and staff while using the computers and other technology in the classrooms. Remember to keep your private information private to keep your identity and person safe from the predators and thieves online.

2. Digital Commerce: Know what you are buying or selling online. Buyer beware.

3. Digital Communication: Before posting,

text or comment, THINK!

Legal and Ethics Online

As you research online, look for information pictures and other searches be sure that you are abiding by the copyright laws. Know that the Fair Use Guidelines only allow for limited use of copyrighted works online. Pictures, clip art, songs and writings need to be referenced when using them in any of your work. For information about how to reference the copyrighted work be sure to check how to reference it for final submissions. Other legal issues online are illegal downloads and pirating copyrighted work. Downloading music and movies from some sites are illegal because you have not paid for them. Pirating is copying and selling copyrighted material and selling them at a reduced price. These both are illegal and will eventually cause you trouble.

4. Digital Literacy: Know how to use technology and how to communicate with others.

5. Digital Etiquette: Use of appropriate language everywhere you go. Use kind words.

6. Digital Law: Know that there are laws that

impact the use of technology as well as in your actual community.

7. Digital Rights and Responsibilities: Know

your rights online are similar to those in your community, rights of privacy and speech are two. Know your responsibilities as well. Reporting cyber bulling, abuse or other inappropriate acts.
