Covington-Newberry Historical Society

To Take Part in Covington Candlelight Christmas
The Covington-Newberry Historical Society is pleased to be participating in the Covington Candlelight Christmas. The museum will be
open during the following hours: Friday, Nov. 8, 6-9 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 9, 4-7 p.m.; Friday, Nov. 15, 6-9 p.m.; and Saturday, Nov. 16, 1-4
p.m.
Active members of the Society will hold a carry-in potluck at the museum as their first annual Christmas party on November 8 at 5 p.m.
Members are welcome to assist in greeting guests from 6-9 p.m., or to sign up to welcome guests during the remaining evenings.
The Society enjoyed several speakers in 2013. Charles Nickel spoke on the 1913 Flood; Mary Nickel talked about Covingtons history;
Becky and Dave Recker spoke about Porters Salve; and John Weikert discussed the plastics industry and the Weikert family tree.
Chris Haines will be the January speaker, and will talk about railroads and the bike path, and Doug Christian will be the February speaker.
His topic will be Forgotten Communities of Miami County.
The Society extended one-year memberships to the 4th grade students and their immediate family members as part of their Ohio History
curriculum. This is the third year the Society has welcomed Covingtons 4th grade students as members, and looks forward to the students
coming to the museum on their upcoming field trip.

Americas White Table Displayed

At Milton-Union Public Library

Parent/Teacher Conferences Set Thursday

In Covington School District

Each November 11, our country

acknowledges the sacrifices made
by and honor given to our military
personnel on Veterans Day. For
many families, military service is a
fact of life for their children, and
for others, its an abstract concept
that might be difficult for many, including young children, to comprehend. Margot Theis Ravens
picture book, Americas White
Table, fits the bill in either case, in
affirmation or as a resource.
The White Table is set in many mess halls as a symbol for and
remembrance to service members fallen, missing, or held captive.
Solitary and solemn, it is the table where no one will ever sit. As a
special gift to her Uncle John, Katie and her sisters are asked to help
set the white table for dinner. As their mother explains the significance
of each item placed on the table, Katie comes to understand and appreciate the depth of sacrifice that her uncle and each member of the
Armed Forces and their families may be called to give.
Americas White Table is on display at the library. Please take a
moment to view the book, learn the symbolic placement of items, and
remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.
The library is located at 560 S. Main St., West Milton.

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held at Covington Schools

Thursday, Nov. 7, from 1:30-9 p.m. Parents are encouraged to call
the high school at 937-473-3746, and the middle school at 937473-2833 for conference appointments. Elementary parents
should have received a request from their childs teacher for a
conference time. If parents did not receive information from a
child, please call the elementary at 937-473-2252.
Covington students will be dismissed at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov.
7. There will be no school for morning and afternoon kindergarten students that day.
Covington Schools will not be in session for all students on
Friday, Nov. 8.

West Milton Church of the Brethren

Clothes Closet Open Every Saturday
Just a reminder that the West Milton Church of the Brethren
Clothes Closet is open from 10 a.m. until noon every Saturday. Stop
in and select free items of clothing and shoes. Donations of gently
used items would be very much appreciated during the same hours.
The church is located at 918 S. Miami St. in West Milton.

Covington State of the Schools Address Slated

Covington Exempted Village School District will hold the annual
State of the Schools Address on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 6:30 p.m., in the
Covington High School Commons.
This meeting is to inform residents about the academic report card,
finance, and the building project.
Covington school parents and residents are cordially invited to attend.

Valley Echoes
by Gary Godfrey
If youre a regular reader of this column, you probably remember my story from last year, about
the young hockey teams keeping us awake to the wee hours of the morning in Grand Rapids,
Michigan.
Ginger and I once again traveled to Grand Rapids to watch our granddaughter number two
(Marie) play volleyball in the NJCAA tournament for junior colleges.
Because of our experience last year, we opted not to stay in the same hotel where the Sinclair
team was staying.
We settled for a Hampton Inn, just about five miles down the road just south of Grand Rapids.
When I checked in, I asked the clerk if there were any junior hockey teams staying the night.
Why yes, do you want on the same floor? she replied.
No! I disclosed with a shout. We had a terrible experience last year down town. We didnt get
any sleep because the players were playing hockey in the hallway just outside our rooms.
Mr. Godfrey, the Hampton Inn has a satisfaction guaranteed policy. If you dont like your stay,
you can get your money refunded. Ill put you on our fourth floor, away from the hockey players, she declared.
That sounds great, well take the room, I smiled.
Because of our age, Ginger and I like to go to bed early, and get up early. So, by 10:00 p.m.,
we were making Zs. It must have been around 11:00 p.m. when I heard the first sounds of running in the halls and the laughter of children. I got up to peek out our peep hole, only to find
one parent walking from his room to the room right besides ours.
It was shear madness, from this point forward.
The little munchkins went on and on and on. I finally had enough and called the front desk.
Theres a lot of noise on the fourth floor, can you have someone come up and check this out.
Were trying to get some sleep.
Ill send up someone right now, the desk clerk replied.
I could hear him talking to someone, while at the same time talking on his walkie talkie. And for
a very brief moment, all I could hear was silence. It took the munchkins about 10 minutes to
restart their marathon down our hallway.
Mrs. Godfrey was resting peacefully, and on occasion telling me, Theyre only kids having fun.
It was now 1:45 a.m. and that was the last time I remember checking our clock. I guess even
hockey players run out of steam.
This weeks bottom line: Thank goodness, this was Maries last volleyball game of her career. I
just couldnt take another tournament in Grand Rapids.

Letter
to the editor
It started out being Global Warming now changed to Climate
Change. I guess some think they can control or change the climate,
which to me, is laughable. They say 97 percent of scientists agree that
Climate Change is real, but in my lifetime, the climate has always
changed! So it tells me the 97 percent of scientists are probably wrong
because they want people to believe they are smarter, more powerful,
and want to replace God. The same scientists will talk about millions
of years theory; but now they say facts. It is sad news when we want
to believe scientists over God. Deify man and humanize God.
No scientist or man can control tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes,
water (either floods or drought) only God can. We choose to believe
God and do good or choose to be deceived. I may change my mind if
scientists could control nature. We need to repent and walk in truth!
God is the CEO of the universe. He has set nature and all things in
order and under His control. Why would we want to believe scientists
who do not line up with Gods Word; but rather listen to men of a fallen
nature, with their imaginations and deceptions, and call them facts?
Only Gods Word is truth. Not only do we have a fallen nature (which
will die), we have a human nature, a lustful nature, a prideful nature,
and a selfish nature! We should live towards a divine nature. Only in
God is this possible.
This country is moving more rapidly toward corruption because it
has left Gods moral law, His standards and principles of living in the
truth of Gods Word. The quarterback that is calling the plays is Satan,
the father of lies.
It has been a good country to grow up in, but I feel sorry for the
future generation. This country is now run by men who are narcissists,
like other socialist countries. It is all about power and self-glory.
