Tutorial Heat Exchanger 1) A shell-and-tube heat exchanger having one shell pass and four tube passes is used

to heat 1.0 kg/s of ethylene glycol from 20 to 50C on the shell side. 1.5 kg/s of water entering at 75C is used in the tubes. The overall heat transfer coefficient is 20 W/m2C. Calculate: i) the area of heat exchanger using LMTD method, and ii) the length of tube using -NTU method. Given : cp,glycol = 2.84 kJ/kg.C and cp,water = 4.18 kJ/kg.C Diameter of the thin-walled tube, Dtube = 2cm NTU relations for heat exchangers for one shell pass 2,4,... tube passes: ( )

where NTU = UAs/Cmin and capacity ratio, c = cmin/cmax Correction factor chart for one shell pass 2, 4, 6, etc. (any multiple of 2), tube passes

A heat exchanger consists of a shell with parallel pipe 25 mm diameters. Hot gas enters the pipe at 420C and it is cooled by water flowing through the shell. The water temperature at inlet is 15C. The heat transfer coefficients for the gas and water are 250 W/m2.C and 1700 W/m2.C respectively. The wall is thin and the effect of conduction is negligible. The gas has a specific heat capacity, cpg of 1020 J/kg.C and it must be cooled down to 150C. The specific heat capacity of water, cpw is 4200 J/kg.C. The flow rate of gas and water are 0.055 kg/s and 0.4 kg/s respectively. Calculate the heat transfer rate, the water exit temperature and the required length of the heat exchanger for counter flow configuration. The heat exchanger becomes fouled after a period of operation time and the gas temperature rises to 200C at the outlet. If the water flow rate is unchanged, calculate the new heat transfer rate, the water exit temperature and the fouling factor.

3)

Hot oil (cp = 3.6 kJ/kg.C) enters a double-pipe parallel-flow heat exchanger at 100C flowing at a rate of 30000 kg/h, and is cooled by cooling water (cp = 4.2 kJ/kg.C) at 10C flowing at a rate of 50000 kg/h. The overall heat transfer coefficient of the heat exchanger is 3000 W/m2.C and the total surface area is 20 m2. Determine the outlet temperatures of hot oil and cooling water using -NTU method.

4) (a) Sketch the temperature profile of a heat exchanger undergoing condensing and boiling processes. (b) Glycol (cp = 2.84 kJ/kg.C) flowing at a rate of 1.0 kg/s is heated in a one-shell-pass and four-tube-pass heat exchanger from 20C to 50C. Cooling water (cp = 4.18 kJ/kg.C) flowing at a rate of 1.5 kg/s enters the tube at 75C. The overall heat transfer coefficient of the heat exchanger is 200 W/m2.C. Determine the length of tube required using LMTD method. Take the tube diameter to be used as 5 cm.
