Hi Jazz Guitar Fans, Another successful players night, with the welcome addition of a visit from Gareth of Brunetti amplification. Gareth came equipped with two new models:

Both amplifiers were used extensively throughout the night, and sounded great! Unfortunately, try as we might, we couldnt entice Gareth into leaving us a sample or two (or even a raffle prize).

In true HJGS form, the evening kicked off with Tom Prior, who played Mona Lisa in a very rhapsodic yet, at the same time, up-tempo style. Tom was in a very inventive mood and we never quite knew what was coming next; he certainly had a very full trick-bag. Tom was then joined by Martin Chung for a duo rendition of Swing 42. Once again, Toms creativity shone through and the actual melody deviated somewhat from the original. Their respective improvisational styles differed as much as their sound and touch, which resulted in an effective and pleasant contrast! Robin Thomas was next up replete with looping box, for a repetitive ambient workout. Its easy to see why some players relate to many contemporary jazz guitarists, as they provide a good model for not having to acquire the harmonic knowledge to play over changes. The easy option??? The harmonic limitations of ambient jazz are not to everyones taste. Neither is the use of backing tracks/loops/tapes/samples etc., especially at HJGS players nights, when there is usually a long queue of guitarists champing at the bit to get to play! Take note Robin, coerce someone to play with you and take the time to write down some charts; everyone can benefit from having to commit their ideas to paper; not to mention the musical, social and emotional interaction with other musicians. Dave Vangelderen and Chris Brown were up next with a faster than usual reading of You Dont Know What Love Is, followed by After Youve Gone and Midnight Voyage. Following the usual short break for socialising and the raffle, the Idle Guits treated us to Georgia and a jazzed-up version of Edvard Griegs Norwegian Dance. Adam Hinchliffes solo spot made for a total contrast. He played a film-themed set, beginning with Henry Mancinis gorgeous Moon River, followed by As Time Goes By; a tune now synonymous with the film Casablanca. Nice arrangements and some very careful playing. Next came Ian Wroes debut on 7 string guitar, playing Manha De Carnaval, in a duet with Darren Dutson-Bromley. And what a deep and wonderful sound he produced. It seems that Ian is destined to make a name for himself as a 7 string player. This country has not really produced a top class exponent of 7 string guitar, with the possible exception of Andy McKenzie and Dave Bennett neither of whom are currently using the 7 string guitar for gigs. Darren was then joined by Adrian Ingram for an extended workout on Autumn Leaves. Mini-fugues, blues licks and ferocious be-bop lines were all in

evidence, tempered throughout by Darrens wonderful chordal work and Adrians Montgomery-esque octaves. The evening concluded with Jez Franks and Martin playing the ubiquitous Bobby Hebb tune Sonny, written not for a woman, but for Hebbs brother who was sadly killed in the Vietnam War. As ever, a spirited and fiery performance ensued. The keen eyed amongst you will have noticed a distinct lack of pictures, which usually accompany the meeting summary. The reason is, we have a lot of guitars for sale in this edition with plenty of pictures, so in an effort to keep the email size down I have had to cut down the meeting pics. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Remember the HJGS exists for the benefit(s) of its members, so we need to hear from YOU: good, bad, indifferent, news, views, gossip, ideas, viewpoints, gigs, sales wants, swaps etc, etc! Please keep us informed of any jazz guitar related gigs, events, sales or other item of interest, so that we can pass information on to other members. HJGS needs to develop its wider network as an important forum for jazz guitar related information and information exchange, so that we may all benefit from the collective wisdom and uncoordinated information that undoubtedly exists amongst fans and connoisseurs.

Please email the committee if you have enough things to warrant a table and we will make the necessary arrangements. If you have a few bits of music etc., bring a carrier bag, if you have more, bring a cardboard box or plastic container. We are looking into the possibility of using the long thin room, alongside our usual room, in order to leave the stuff safely locked up when we move on to playing latter in the evening. Dont forget too, that all the monies go to the individual and in some cases, hopefully, swaps will be preferable. If anyone does particularly well small donations to society funds are always welcome re upcoming guests. P.S. Lets see how many Mickey Baker books turn up!

Diary of a Seven String Virgin


A blow by blow account of getting to grips (sic) with the 7 string guitar.

Ian Wroe Day 1. Day 2. What have I done!! Ok, lets get serious. Strings are a bit sloppy (11 64) so I decide to go up to 12 72 since heavier gauge 7 string sets are difficult to find, and this way I can use standard 6 string sets with an extra heavy bass string. I hit an immediate problem. Standard guitar machine heads wont take a 72 thou string, neither will the tailpiece claw. This is easy to remedy, but since I was promised that this could be corrected under warranty. I play safe and allow the shop to correct this minor hiccup. How am I going to tune the bass string? A quick search of the internet turns up the fascinating fact that Russia has a history of 7 string guitars going back to the 18th century. This doesnt help me since their various tunings appear to be any combination of the letters A G. Guitars are tuned in 4th (with the odd maj 3rd) so B seems to be the most obvious. Day 5. Having trouble. The visual sense is overpowering the aural sense. E.g. playing a G chord (3rd fret). For 40 years there was no free string on the bass side of the neck, am I playing Cm (ears say no, eyes say yes). Similar problems with the right hand; feeling extra string under my thumb. The only way round it is not to look at the guitar. B bass isnt working for me. So I have a re-think. I wanted to be able to add breadth and depth to chord work and greater range to bass line work. Tuning the bass to A has lots of advantages. All of the chord shapes I use normally incorporating the 5th string (A) have an easy route to the lower octave on the 7th string. I then find that this is the tuning of choice for most modern 7 string players. HJGS night. Choose to play Manha De Carnaval with Darrens patient support. For a first outing, among friends, it didnt go too badly. Still lots to do, but I get an idea of what it can sound like when I get it sussed.

Darren has supplied an analysis of Autumn Leaves for this month


The song Autumn Leaves follows a series of ii-V and ii-V-I progressions mostly in the key of Bb major and in its relative minor, G minor. In this article we'll explore ways of soloing over it. The piece begins with Cm7, F7, Bbma7 and Ebma7. These are chords ii-V-I and IV in Bb major.

As these chords are constructed from the Bb major scale we can treat this as a tonal centre and use a Bb major scale to solo over them.

Always be aware of the notes you play and how they relate to the chords, some notes sound better than others. The note Bb will sound great over Cm7 for example but less so over F7. The piece modulates to its relative minor, G minor. Here we have a ii-V-I that would give us the chords Am7b5, D7 and Gm.

Over this you could play a G harmonic minor scale. This section is repeated.

The next section reverses the idea beginning with the ii-V-I progression in Gm followed by iiV-I in Bb. The scales used remain the same.

The next part of the progression is Am7b5 and D7, the ii-V in Gm followed by a ii-V progression in F major giving us the chords Gm7 and C7. This is followed by a ii-V-I in Eb major, Fm7, Bb7 and Ebma7. The sequence concludes with a ii-V- I progression in Gm.

Here is a solo based around these tonal centres. The solo includes passing note and chromatic leading notes which are used to embellish it as you would find in most solos but the underlying melodic structure is based around the key centres outlined.

Triggs Sal Salvador. Top-of-the-line archtop. Beautiful AAA solid timbers with stunning onepiece maple neck a la Jimmy DAquisto/John DAngelico. The previous owner calls this a Sal Salvador model, but in reality it is more like a 1962 Gibson Johnny Smith in dimension, design, sound and playability. Mint, with mint hardshell case, half the present rrp at 3,000 ono. Swaps/trades considered.

The #bbott +ictor ,$rlington is a fab piece of ,ritish g$itar history. -bony neck plays better than almost anything. .a e in /01*2s, may have been starte before 33II an finishe off after, accor ing to 4rank 5ambri ge. So rare that I can2t fin another one to compare for val$ation, b$t I2 like '/)** for it.

The Gibson ,& 6 0 amp is late /01*2s, last time I playe thro$gh it I !as not a!estr$ck so it maybe nee s a bit of a look at, it $se to so$n 7 Gol en8 - so maybe nee s a valve or a bit of kno! ho! 9 ':** as it is.
