Jim Barrella III Age 27 Army 2006-2009 Jim entered Basic Training on 28 Jul 2006 and was later stationed at Ft Riley Kansas attached to Charlie Troop 1 ! Ca" 1 #$% &n 28 Fe' 200( he deployed to #ra) and patrolled the areas around Baghdad% &n 28 *ug 200( Jim+s unit was attac,ed while on patrol in the $ora -ar,et $istrict and his .um"ee was hit with a parachute grenade /anti0armor1% Jim su22ered a ma3or in3ury to his arm re)uiring se"eral surgeries and is completely dea2 in his right ear% .e still carries shrapnel in him a'domen4 arm and groin area% Jim spent 2 years reco"ering 2rom his in3uries with most o2 that 'eing spent at Broo,s *rmy -edical Center Ft% 5am .ouston Te6as% .e was medically discharged due to his in3uries and returned to the ci"ilian world% Jim has not let his in3uries get in the way o2 daily li2e and has 'ecome a partner in C7J Construction Company% $uring the recent 2looding in the 8astern region o2 C9: he again went on deployment%%%%this time to pump 'asements and sho"el mud 2or those a22ected%%he did this at no cost to the home owner% For his ser"ice to our Country and continued ser"ice to those in need4 # 2eel my son deser"es to 'e recogni;ed and commended% (Nominated by Jim Barella Jr. )

Andrew Miller grew up in the Chicago suburb of Barrington, and graduated with his BA in international business from Illinois Wesleyan University in 2 !" #e received his commission as a second lieutenant in the U"$" Army through the %&'C program, and served as a field artillery officer in (t" $ill &)lahoma, $outh *orea, and (t" Campbell, *+" Andrew served in eastern Afghanistan from 2 ,-2 . as a fire support officer for the / !th Infantry, the 0Currahees0 of the 1 1st Airborne 2ivision, which he is e3tremely proud of" After his first tour, he was promoted to the ran) of captain and studied military intelligence at (t" #uachuca, A4" #e returned to Afghanistan as the s5uadron intelligence officer for !-! Cavalry, 1 th Mountain 2ivision, in 2 1 -2 11" #e received his honorable discharge in 2 12, and has been writing ever since" #is other interests include coo)ing, motorcycles, gardening, painting, photography, and the outdoors" After leaving the Army in 2 12, Andrew came to Clear 6ath for 7eterans to volunteer" 8i)e many 7eterans who leave the military, Andrew9s first instinct was to :give bac); even before he9d had a chance to assimilate to life outside of the military here in $yracuse, <+" In (ebruary 2 1=, Andrew agreed to lead our community strawberry U-6ic) (ield and helped raise almost >2 , for the 2ogs27ets program" With e3ceptional leadership s)ills, Andrew mar)eted, organi?ed and included the community as part of our agriculture programming" #aving never done anything li)e it before, Andrew was still able to apply his military e3perience to something outside the Army" Although a sensitive time for Andrew, he still e3hibited patience and educated the community on military culture and the issues facing today9s veterans, he also used this opportunity to recruit other volunteers for various programs" <ow wor)ing as a part time chef, Andrew has organi?ed, developed, and e3ecuted wee)ly canteens for 7eterans, free of charge, which serves veterans spanning from WWII to present day conflicts" 'hese canteens offer 7eterans opportunity to meet and find support amongst their peers" In addition, Andrew has ramped up creative wor)shops such as photography, painting and is a leader of the $yracuse University 7eteran9s Writing @roup" Andrew reali?es that many veterans, li)e himself, have e3perienced difficulties readAusting to civilian life" #aving benefitted from the creative arts, writing, and care from healers from both the 7A and the C<+ community, his latest goal is to help other veterans discover the methods that will ma)e them feel peace again" Andrew has put others before self and given bac) not only in programming and service but as a mentor to other 7eterans who may be struggling" Although his :home; is in the suburbs of Chicago, we believe Andrew9s new home is here in $yracuse and we, along with his fellow colleagues and peers feel the same" Andrew has become a role model for other veterans at only 2. years-old, he is a model of what successful reintegration is for our returning combat veterans"

Jayson Andersen Age 26 Army 6 years # met Jayson on my 2irst girls night out at the Bay% >ittle did # ,now that it was going to 'e a night 2illed with soldiers on their night out a2ter recently coming home 2rom a 1 year deployment in *2ghanistan% Ahen # met him he was li,e no other man you would typically meet out4 he was a real gentleman4 his eyes were 2illed with stories # wanted to hear% The typical lo"e story Ae met while he was stationed here at Fort $rum4 2ell in lo"e4 he 2inished his contract4 went 'ac, home to his hometown Gocatello4 #daho only to say good'ye to his 2amily again and dri"e across the country to 'e with me% Though we had so much lo"e to gi"e to each other the time was tough% 9ot much is tal,ed a'out with returning soldiers% .e did e"erything he could to ma,e those stories hidden in his eyes 'ecome easier to cope with% The <* has helped many soldiers deal with the agony o2 GT5$% 5ince then he has learned to cope with ci"ilian li2e4 'ecome a lo"ing 2ather 2igure 2or my two girls4 and put 'ac, into our community% *lmost a year ago he trans2erred to the 9ational Cuard to help our local community% # would li,e to nominate Jayson to 'e honored 'ecause so many people donJ+t reali;e how young our "eterans are% That "eterans are not 3ust 2rom wars long ago% Ae ha"e so many young soldiers coming home and still ha"e their whole li2e ahead o2 them4 and so many o2 them that don+t get the help they need to trans2er 'ac, to ci"ilian li2e% Jayson has o"ercome so so many o'stacles and continues to ser"e our country now% Ae are e6pecting our 2irst child this 5eptem'er and # ,now this child will 'e proud to hear what his $addy has done 2or our country% (Nominated by Jenni%er &'Neill)

#1risto)1er #ollins Age 2" !arine #or)s 2003-2006 Chris ,new e6actly what he wanted to do a2ter graduating high school4 and that was to enlist in the @nited 5tates -arine Corps% .is interest in the military stemmed 2rom 'eing a part o2 his high schoolDs -CJR&TC unit4 where he )uic,ly e6celled and o'tained se"eral leadership roles% Three wee,s a2ter graduating 2rom high school4 Chris le2t 2or 'oot camp at Garis #sland4 5C% .e went on to train in the #n2antry Training BattalionDs 5chool o2 #n2antry /5&#1 at Camp Ceiger4 9C% #t was here that he earned his -&54 0E11 Ri2lemen% *2ter graduating 5&#4 Chris was assigned to 2ndBattalion4 2nd -arines at Camp >e3eune4 9C% .e ,new when he enlisted that he would 'e deployed 'ecause it was a time o2 war% .e ,new that a deployment meant he was not guaranteed to come home ali"e or unin3ured% But he ,new it was the right thing to do% .e was always stri"ing to ma,e himsel2 a 'etter -arine% $uring his 2nd tour o2 duty in #ra)4 2riends 'ac, home cele'rated holidays and 'irthdays with their 2amilies% Chris spent his 21st 'irthday4 Than,sgi"ing and Christmas o"erseas% This is not what ma,es Chris a hero though% Ahat he did to ser"e our country puts tears in my eyes% *s di22icult as e"erything he saw4 did and e6perienced in #ra) was4 his real 'attle did not e"en 'egin until he came 'ac, home% #n 200(4 at the age o2 224 while others his age were 3ust starting their li"es with a 'right 2uture ahead4 Chris was gi"en a diagnosis o2 GT5$% Ahile others around him had their entire li"es to loo, 2orward to4 Chris had to start again% .e could no longer e22ecti"ely ser"e in the -arine Corps% Things that used to come so easily were now a daily struggle% Chris was now li"ing with daily depression and an6iety and dealing with not 'eing a'le to sleep 'ecause o2 nightmares% .e also was dealing with mood swings that he couldnDt e6plain% :et somehow he had to 2ind a way to push through it all% * year a2ter lea"ing his dream o2 'eing a career -arine4 Chris enrolled in at 5yracuse @ni"ersity with the help o2 the <*Ds <ocational Reha'ilitation program% .e studied #n2ormation -anagement 7 Technology and earned a minor in Clo'al 8nterprise Technology% Following graduation at 5@4 Chris earned a masterDs degree in Cy'ersecurity 2rom @tica College% 9e6t year4 he plans to start a Gh$ program% .e does all this while wor,ing 2ull time% .is hope is to one day4 2inally 'e a'le to ser"e his country again with a position in the 95*% Chris will always 'e a disa'led "eteran% 5ometimes his GT5$ is managea'le4 and other times he needs the support o2 e"eryone around him 3ust to ,eep him going% .is dri"e and passion to 2ind another way to ser"e his country a2ter this diagnosis is truly inspiring% :et he doesnDt e"en reali;e he is a hero% (Nominated by Monica #ch(orles)
