ted picture illustrating the excitement of Halloween in St. Clair Shores.
This spooky setting, below, was one of the reader submitted Halloween decoration photos.
Give me two acres and youll have a hotel,
Community Development and Inspection Director
Chris Rayes told those in attendance at the quarterly
St. Clair Shores business alliance meeting.
I dont think its as simple as that, Mayor Kip
Walby chimed in at the dismay of the group.
The question of when, where and if St. Clair Shores
will have a hotel comes up at this groups meeting and
several others where business owners gather to dis-
cuss whats happening in the city.
Walby provided the business alliance with a bit of
background on the question and said the Nautical
Mile Merchants Association commissioned a study
many years ago. The roadblock, Walby said, is while
its feasible to support a hotel in the summer months,
winters chill freezes out interested parties.
Weve been trying to find a partnership, Walby
said, relaying former City Manager Ben Hughes was
working with St. Johns Hospital and Medical Center
on a deal where the facility would agree to buy rooms
to house people coming to town for training purposes
in the off-season.
He also said the city has been working with the
owners of Blossom Heath Inn on another deal.
If there was a desire to build, we havent had some-
one knock on the doors asking us if were willing to
do whatever, Walby said. The city has been doing
whatever it can to assist.
Alliance member Mark OBrien asked if the city
would consider a modified version of a hotel, such as
a quaint boutique hotel.
The city looked at that as well, Walby said. We
dont want a Comfort Inn or anything like that.
When asked if the city has an issue with a bed and
breakfast, Rayes responded, If someone came to us,
we would make that allowed.

Challenge in the gymna-

The students broke up
into teams more than one
month ago and applied
what theyve been learn-
ing about force and mo-

the project.
These students have
been working on these
roller coasters for five
weeks, fifth-grade

about 50 minutes every
day theyve been work-
ing on these things.
Willoughby said the
students learned so much
about the scientific con-
cepts and lessons that
reach beyond the text-
books.
The kids learned
about teamwork, prob-
lem solving and collabo-
ration she said. And
they learned about force-
in-motion in a real-life
scenario, too.
The project challenged
teams of students to de-
sign, plan and construct a
roller coaster made only
from paper. The object
was to have a marble roll
down the entire coaster.
Once the coasters were
completed, the structures
were put on display in the
gym and judged in sever-
al categories best time
(slower the better), struc-
ture at the end of the
coaster to catch the mar-
ble, decoration and the
teams ability to explain
Newtons three laws of
motion and how these
laws are exhibited with
their paper coaster.
Students were provid-
ed with paper templates
and an instruction book,
Willoughby said.
They had to read and
interpret instructions,
she said. This was com-
pletely hands-off by me

Know Your Skin
By Lisa A. Manz-Dulac, MD
Any time the skin is cut
or injured there is a chance of
scarring. Most of the time, scarring
is minimal, but in some cases
undesirable scars occur that may
require medical attention.
Hypertrophic scars describe
scars that stay within the area of
the injury but which have become
raised or lumpy, and may be red
and itchy. Tese kinds of scars
appear as the site heals; some may
recede, even without treatment.
Hypertrophic scars can occur with
patients of any age or skin type.
Keloids are abnormal scars
which extend and spread beyond
the area of the injury, usually
forming afer the site has healed.
Keloids never go away by
themselves and can continue to
grow and enlarge over time. More
common in patients between 10
and 30 years of age, as well as
for African-Americans, keloids
are most likely to appear on the
earlobes, neck and shoulders, chest,
or hands and forearms, although
they can develop anywhere.
No one knows why these forms
of unsatisfactory scars occur. It is
estimated that 10-15% of scars may
be abnormal. Treatment of these
scars can be dif cult. Options
that may be discussed include use
of silicone gel dressings, pressure,
cortico-steroid injections, laser
therapy, or for severe cases, surgical
excision. Patients with keloids
may also fnd that once treated,
especially when treated by excision,
their keloids can reappear.

scars and their treatments, contact

2014 Olympic games.
Activities begin at 5 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 21, with a re-
lay race wherein residents
can request to run up to a
few blocks carrying an
Olympic torch from city
hall to Walby Park with
the majority of festivities
taking place at Blossom
Heath Park. Once the
torch arrives at the park,
Mayor Kip Walby has the
honor of lighting the cen-
terpiece torch in the citys
Olympic village.
To be eligible for a
chance to participate in
the torch walk, residents
must purchase a T-shirt
emblazoned with the fes-
tival logo now available at
Gilberts Hardware,
21912 Harper or
Embroidery and Much
More, 27419 Harper, both
in St. Clair Shores.
The winners will be an-
nounced during the citys
tree lighting festivities
planned for 5 p.m. Friday,
Dec. 6.
Were trying to get as
many activities as we
can, Bologna said.
Were looking for busi-
nesses and local service
clubs for their help and
money. Weve got some
big goals.
Current plans include
two-on-two hockey tour-
naments and figure skat-
ing demonstrations on the
parks front ponds which
will also be open for pub-
lic skating before and af-
ter scheduled activities, a
fish fry on Friday spon-
sored by St. Isaac Jogues,
mini golf, bowling with
frozen turkeys and music.
The Womans Civic
League has already
stepped up to sponsor a
childrens activities cen-
ter; Blossom Heath Inn is
planning a pasta dinner
Saturday, Feb. 22, and
that afternoon the St.
Clair Shores Optimists
Club is sponsoring a chili
dog lunch.
Local landscaping com-
panies have also volun-
teered to move ice from
Civic Arena to the parks
beach area for a sledding
hill if Mother Nature
helps out.
This may be the first
year ever Im praying for
snow, Bologna said, add-
ing after the three-day
event has concluded, the
hill remains for residents
use.
The committee is also
lining up ice carvers for
demonstrations and a
competition.
The goal, Bologna said,
is to have 80 ice sculp-
tures displayed in the
park. She is hopeful some
will serve as backdrops
for those wishing to be
photographed with them.
But the surroundings
wont all be cold, she said.
Several warming tents
run by local boy and girl
scouts clubs one featur-
ing beer, wine and food
will be located in different
areas of the park.
We are also holding
what we believe to be the
first-ever Polar Plunge in
St. Clair Shores, Bologna
said.
The committee is ask-
ing sponsoring groups to
take charge of their activi-
ty with funds raised to go
back toward planning fu-
ture Aqua Freeze activi-
ties.

The citys Beautification Commission poured
over the nominations, they scoured the locations
and met to decide this years Beautification Award
recipients.
To me, these are one of the most important
parts of beautification, said the commissions
chairman Lillian Claycomb. We spend a lot of
time searching out these homes. Its a community
effort and we try and do the entire city and try and
pick out the home that really stands out, that really
enhances the street. Its super-important because
thousands of people drive through this city each
week and they see these places and its important.
Councilman John Caron said the awards are im-
portant not only because of the positive image it
sends about the city, but also for the message it can
send to neighbors.
I think it really inspires neighbors, he said. By
recognizing these homes, homes that are very well
kept and just beautiful every year, I think that gets
the neighbors inspired to do the same with their
home. That can spread down the whole street.
This years award recipients were broken down
into three categories, Claycomb said residen-
tial, business and 10-Year Business recipients.
We have a list of everyone that has won,
Claycomb said. This year we are doing the
10-Year Award and presenting them to businesses
that won 10 years ago and have maintained, thats
the key, maintained their landscape and building.
That means a lot.
Earning the honor in any capacity is significant,
Caron said.
There are so many people out there that want to
focus on the negative things, he said. This is
such a positive for the city. Its such a good thing
and its something that should make everyone in
the city proud.

Councilwoman Candice Rusie wants administra-
tions time included in the bottom line of costs associat-
ed with the citys housing rehabilitation projects.
Her request was made just before city council accept-
ed a $152,000 offer for 21601 Bayside listed for
$149,900.
The city paid $19,980 for the property purchased in
2012 through the Macomb County Tax Foreclosure
program and spent $80,000 to rehab the house, includ-
ing a new kitchen, bathroom, HVAC system, roof, elec-
trical rewiring and improvements to the basement.
A new garage was added to the 54-by-201 lot along
with a new driveway and patio slab. Other upgrades in-
clude refinished hardwood floors, basement repairs
and corrections to the handiwork done by the previ-
ous owner.
The list price, according to Community Development
and Inspection Director Chris Rayes, was based on re-
cent sales of like properties within a mile of the Bayside
house.
Rayes said three offers were submitted for the house
all above the appraised value of $128,000 with the
committee recommending the top bid.
With the exception of a house on Alger, Rayes said all
recent sales of properties purchased through the fore-
closure program were over the appraised value.
Rusie, however, argued with the comparable sales,
stating one house was within a different school district,
thus affecting its true value.
She also questioned how much administration time
and holding costs were spent on the house and with the
tax foreclosure subcommittee arguing about paint col-
ors and other details she saw as minute.
In the future, she asked Rayes and City Manager Phil
Ludos to calculate those costs and include them in the
final breakdown of how much the city actually spent on
the rehabs, thus affecting the profit margin.
Rusie later stated she believes administrations time
would be better spent helping residents with issues
than debating details.
Rayes said such time had not been calculated and he
could not surmise.
As for the committees time, Councilman Tony Tiseo,
who sits on the committee, argued its time should not
be included in Rusies idea of a bottom line.
Our time is our time, he said, expressing pleasure
with the sale.
The neighbors are ecstatic, he said. We have a
quality resident living in it. More money could have
been made if we didnt have (basement) issues.
Its not about what you made on it, but breaking
even isnt bad either.
The offer was accepted 6-0 with Councilman Peter
Rubino recusing himself, as he knows the person who
submitted the bid.

This years brunch not
only includes a hearty

also an appearance by
Oopsy Daisy the clown,
and more.
Of course, were also
going to have a visit with
Santa, Stahl said. And,
were going to have a spe-

too.
Stahl wouldnt reveal
the surprise just yet, but
said it was something that
the kids would certainly
enjoy, and something that
is new to the event.
Were very excited

all Im going to say right

The Cool City
Committee is
auctioning off
several light-
house sculptures
beginning at
noon Saturday,
Nov. 9, at the St.
Clair Shores Golf
Course. This
sculpture, which
was the official
city sculpture, is
among those to
be auctioned off
at the event.
For the past several months, light-
house sculptures have been scattered
throughout the city.
Beginning at noon Saturday, Nov. 9, at
the St. Clair Shores Golf Course, several
of these decorated sculptures, including
those from each of the three high
schools in the city and the citys official
lighthouse, which spent much of the
summer months in front of city hall, will
go up for auction, with the proceeds go-
ing to the charity of the buyers choice.
Were excited about this, said Cool
City Committee Chairwoman Margi
Armstrong. This whole project was so
exciting and enjoyable for us. Were re-
ally looking forward to seeing it
through now and raising money for
charity with it.
Although the lighthouses from four lo-
cal venues will be available, Armstrong
said that more could come up for auc-
tion at the time of the event.
Businesses that sponsored lighthous-
es already and decorated them can do-
nate for the auction, she said. So we re-
ally arent sure how many of these busi-
nesses are going to do this until
Saturday.
There is no charge for attending the
event, Armstrong said, and the first 50
patrons will receive a spaghetti lunch.
I would say that even if youre not in-
terested in bidding on one of the light-
houses, she said. I think its a great op-
portunity to come out, have a good time,
and enjoy the company of fellow St.
Clair Shores residents.

Land of the Free because of the Brave!
Three cheers
At this time, city council
could not be more pleased
with its newest business
Buffalo Wild Wings.
All councilmembers and
a few administrators were
on hand at the restaurants
soft opening a benefit
for the Lake Shore
Quarterback Club held
Oct. 17.
Its nice to se how they
are supporting the com-
munity, Councilwoman
Candice Rusie said at
councils Oct. 21 meeting.
They are already trying to
be a part of the communi-
ty.
Councilman Chris Vitale
thanked Mayor Kip Walby
for allowing residents to
keep the brick wall abut-
ting their properties and
that of BW3 slated to be re-
moved and replaced with
shrubs.
Im glad it was kept,
Vitale said. It would have
been a disaster.
C o m m u n i t y
Devel opment and
Inspection Director Chris
Rayes said hes been in
contact with restaurant
owners regarding the
large dirt pile and the used
car dealership building to
the north of the property.
While hes been told the
area will be cleaned, he
was not given an exact
date.
In an effort to curtail
complaints, Councilman
Tony Tiseo suggested the
city contact the owners
about the volume of the
speakers at the buildings
entrance abutting the
neighborhoods which he
said were too loud.
A new Gilberts?
While the owners of
Gilberts Lodge await the
results of their insurance
claim on the popular city
restaurant, Mayor Kip
Walby is already counting
on the business reopening.
Its an institution in St.
Clair Shores. Its been
around since the 1960s,
Walby said at councils
Oct. 21 meeting.
Were hoping to see a
new Gilbert's in the
spring.
Ludos pleased
City Manager Phil
Ludos marked his first 60
days on the job with a
smile and compliments all
around.
I have to tell you the
staff in this city is the best
Ive ever worked with,
Ludos told council at its
Oct. 21 meeting. Ive nev-
er heard someone say
thats not my job. There
are very good people that
are servicing the city of St.
Clair Shores.
Im pleased to be
here.
Lights out
Residents noting
burned out street lights
are being asked to call
Police Chief Mike
Wallemans secretary at
(586) 445-5300.
City Manager Phil
Ludos explained the po-
lice department coordi-
nates with DTE Energy on
such matters, as mainte-
nance and repairs are the
responsibility of the ener-
gy provider under the
citys contract.
The city is only respon-
sible for lights along the
nautical mile.

6A ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2013
COUNCIL CLIPS
The Lakeside Palette
Club hosts its free annual
Fall Art Exhibit and Sale
from Friday, Nov. 15
through Monday, Dec. 9,
at the St. Clair Shores
Adult Education Center.
The center is located on
Masonic just west of
Kennedy Middle School
and the exhibit is open be-
tween 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Monday-Friday.
Were very excited
about the exhibit, said
Lakeside Palette Club
President Deni Metivier.
There will be all kinds of
mediums on exhibit from
photography, digital art,
oils, watercolor, acrylics,
pastels, pencil, sculpture,
pen and ink, whatever
medium our artists want
to do really.
The show itself is jur-
ied, with local artist and
instructor Mary Reo judg-
ing the works.
We have a dinner on
the first Friday of the
show and a short awards
ceremony after that,
Metivier said. And we
will also include the high
schools. Winners from
the high school get a gift
certificate. They need
supplies so badly and the
schools are just not get-
ting them. Were a chari-
table organization and
were very happy to be
able to do this.
Awards will accompany
winning works of art
throughout the course of
the exhibit, Metivier said.

Michael McConnell and
Heather Hirdes house at
21933 Stephens was re-
cently awarded a historic
marker from the citys
Historical Commission.
According to Historical
Commission member
John Cilluffo, the couple
did their own research on
the house and shared it
with the commission for
verification.
The house is located on
lot 110 of the Whitmore
Lake subdivision, created
in 1919 in what was Lake
Township.
Cilluffo shared the fol-
lowing information about
the house:
Frank Suckling and his
wife, Theresa, purchased
multiple lots of the
Whi t mor e Lake
Subdivision Nov. 15, 1924,
including lot 110 from
Joseph Whitmore and his
wife, Jennie. About five
years later, Theresa
Suckling sold multiple lots
in that subdivision, includ-
ing lot 110 and others in
the Whitmore Lake
Subdivision Annex, to the
Union Trust Company.
Union Trust Company
was founded by Colonel
Frank J. Hecker, who
owned the mansion 5510
Woodward (at the corner
of East Ferry) in Midtown
Detroit. By the 1920s, the
Union Trust Company be-
came the citys largest
bank and specialized in
house mortgage loans,
which was unusual, as
large banks at that time
seldom did such financing.
On June 28, 1929,
Adrian C. Allard and his
wife, Marvel, purchased
lots 110 and 111 from the
Union Trust Company and
three months later sold lot
110 to Henry De Bruyne
and his wife, Estella.
On July 18, 1935, the
Allards purchased lot 110
back from the De Bruynes
and in 1943, when Adrian
Allard took a job in
Indiana making weapons
for the war effort, he sold
the house to the
DeBruynes.
The De Bruynes also
purchased lots 111, 112
and 200 from the Allards.
In October of 1954, John
T. Kook and his wife,
Doris, purchased lots 110,
111 and 200 from the De
Bruynes where they re-
mained until Sept. 16,
2011, when the widowed
Doris M. Kook, sold the
house to McConnell.
McConnell and Hirdes
renovated the house, in-
cluding stripping the wall-
paper, removing carpeting
and floor tiles and refinish-
ing the old hardwood
floors. The parlor is deco-
rated in 1920s style.
City assessment records
indicate the house was
built in 1927
We are very pleased
that Mr. McConnell has
chosen to recognize the
historical significance of
his home with a historical
marker and thereby iden-
tify it as being a part of the
unique history of the City
of St. Clair Shores,
Cuffillo said. We hope
that many more residents
and business establish-
ments owning structures
built in 1951 or earlier,
will choose to do the
same.

er program, visit

PHOTO COMPLIMENTS OF THE ST. CLAIR SHORES HISTORICAL COMMISSION.
Michael McConnell and Heather Hirdes house at 21933 Stephens recently received
a historic plaque from the citys Historical Commission.
Couple receives historic marker
Veronica Pinto, owner of
the Lakeside Bait Shop in
St. Clair Shores had to re-
move an outdoor ice chest
from outside her business
after 25 years.
She recently learned it
was a violation of city ordi-
nance to sell items outside
her business.
Now were not able to
put it outside. We dont
have the room for it, she
told city council at its Oct.
21 meeting.
What problems or is-
sues came about after all
this time that this ordi-
nance should be en-
forced, she asked, refer-
encing a city code that for-
bids businesses from sell-
ing their products outside
their businesses.
Pinto pointed out pro-
pane sales, newspaper
boxes and others as exam-
ples, adding she under-
stands why some products
cannot be stored indoors.
Further we found out
there are many businesses
that are exempt; produce
can be sold on sidewalks at
businesses (not related to
produce sales), hardware
stores have clearance ta-
bles and other items out-
side. How do you decide
what is a problem and
something else is not? she
asked.
Pinto also argued the
outside sales attract shop-
pers inside the store, thus
potentially increasing
sales.
Mayor Kip Walby could
not specifically address
her concerns and told her
the city administration
would look at the ordi-
nance and make recom-
mendations for possible
changes.
In the meantime, busi-
nesses affected by the re-
cent enforcement are
asked to contact City
Manager Phil Ludos with
their questions.

Clean Opinion
audit for district
Lakevi ew Publ i c
Schools received an
unqualified or clean
opinion, from the certi-
fied public accounting
fi rm of Stewart,
Beauvais & Whipple at
its Oct. 15 school board
meeting.
The rating is the top
report possible for the
district.
As budgeted, the dis-
trict continued to invest
in major capital infra-
structure and improve-
ment, said Lakeview
Pu b l i c Sc h o o l
Superintendent Karl
Paulson in a press re-
lease.
Including the acqui-
sition of, and renovation
to, Wheat Educational
Campus and Princeton
Elementary.
All funds reported
demonstrate a positive
balance, according to
the report.
The general fund
shows a slight balance
reduction of $629,188,
making the total bal-
ance of funding avail-
able at about $3.1 mil-
lion.
Im pleased to share
that Lakeview had a
Clean Opinion in all ar-
eas once again,
Paulson said. The au-
dit, once again, rein-
forces that Lakeview
has continued to bal-
ance our budget, focus
our money on our mis-
sion, and provide the
kinds of procedural
safeguards our taxpay-
ers deserve.
We know this out-
come is no accident.

Toyota
Highlander
turned close-
by and a long-
distance trips into a tween
dream. It was the delight
of a tween who, on occa-
sion, complains of car
sickness; and who, on oc-
casion, fights the boredom
of adult company.
This 11-1/2-year-old
loved the roominess of the
Highlanders second-row
seats, the reclining backs
of said seats and the flip-
down screen that allowed
her to watch three DVDs
and do some snacking en
route to Chicago in late
July.
The adults in general,
and the driver in particu-
lar, enjoyed almost every-
thing about their
Highlander experiences.
The nimble, responsive
handling was pleasing.
The spacious interior,
comfortable seats with
perforated leather surfac-
es and visibility all got high
marks.
It took the assistance
of the youngest traveler
to activate, through a cell
phone, the voice-
prompting navigation
system which, miracu-
lously, got us to the door
step of our hotel.
Our 2013 Highlander
was a Limited model with
V-6 and four-wheel drive.
The four-cylinder engine,
standard on the base and
Plus models of the three-
row crossover utility vehi-
cle, has its work cut out for
it. Its a 187 horsepower
2.7-liter four mated to a
six-speed automatic pro-
pelling a 3,946-pound ve-
hicle. The four-cylinder is
rated at 25 miles per gallon
in highway driving.
The 3.5-liter V-6 devel-
ops 270 horsepower and is
standard on the SE and
Limited models; it is avail-
able on the Highlander
and Highlander Plus. The
transmission is a five-
speed electronically con-
trolled automatic.
The V-6 in the test
Highlander Limited with
AWD was rated at 17 mpg
city and 22 mpg highway.
Front drive and full-time
all-wheel drive apply to all
models.
The 2013 Highlander
and Highlander Hybrid
models feature changes to
standard and optional
multi-media technology
for 2013, with Display
Audio made standard on
Highlander, SE and
Highlander Plus grades;
the Highlander Hybrid
now includes as standard
Display Audio with
Navigation and the
Entune multimedia
package.
Assembled at Toyotas
Motor Manufacturing
Princeton, Ind., facility, the
Highlander is a three-row
crossover that offers a
choice between four-cylin-
der and V6 power, front-
wheel drive (FWD) and
full-time four-wheel drive
(4WD).
The Highlander Plus
model grade replaces the
former tech package and
adds numerous features
including a rear back-up
camera.
Bells, whistles
The Highlander with
2.7-liter four and front
drive starts at $29,020.
Our test Highlander had
a suggested retail price of
$39,250. The rear-seat en-
tertainment system with
wireless headphones add-
ed $1,760 to the bottom
line.
The Limited is well-
equipped with features
such as projector-beam
headlights, fog lights, a
windshield wiper de-icer,
puddlelights on the out-
side mirrors, power moon-
roof, perforated leather
heated power front seats
and 19-inch wheels.
Toyotas across-the-
board Star Safety System
includes vehicle stability
and traction control,
brake-force distribution,
brake assist and smart
stop technology. There are
seven air bags on board.
Hybrid advantages
The Highlander
Hybrid offers perfor-
mance plus fuel econo-
my, with an EPA-
estimated 28 city/28 mpg
highway fuel economy
ratings. All Highlander
Hybrid models are
equipped with four-
wheel-drive with intelli-
gence and are available
in Hybrid audio with
navigation and the
Entune multimedia
package.
The Highlander
Hybrids Hybrid Synergy
Drive system pairs a
3.5-liter V-6 gasoline en-
gine with a high-torque
electric drive motor-gen-
erator for a total system
output of 280 net horse-
power. The 4WD
Highlander Hybrid gener-
ates rear-wheel power
with a separate electric
motor that is capable of
additional drive torque on
demand. Toyota said the
Highlander Hybrid 4WD-i
system does not require
power-transfer gearing or
a driveshaft from the
front. The system elec-
tronically varies front and
rear torque distribution
depending on traction
conditions.
The Highlander Hybrid
is able to operate solely in
electric mode under cer-
tain conditions for a short
distance at low speeds
or in some stop-and-go
driving situations.
Second-generation
Highlanders are assem-
bled at Toyotas Princeton,
Ind. plant.
The Highlander has an
overall government crash
test rating of four out of
five stars.
