[GEOMETRY] Mr. Vallone Do Now: 1) Notebook and pen. 2) Graph paper, pencil, eraser.

3) Think and Answer: [have x-/y-axes drawn with measure marks but no labels] What is this diagram and what is it used for?

[COORDINATES] FDR High School Homework: Graph a set of points that are arranged diagonally, name them, write their coordinates, and label the quadrant(s) they lie in. Procedure: 1. Do Now & Attendance 2. Motivation & Aim 3. Lesson 4. Activity 5. Summary 6. Clean Up / Pack Up

(3 Minutes) (5 Minutes) (10 Minutes) (20 Minutes) (3 Minutes) (3 Minutes)

Motivation: Begin with a quick refresher to activate student\'s prior knowledge. Key points: * travel horizontally across the x axis, then vertically across the y axis * place your point at the intersecting lines (not in blank space) Have students draw X and Y axes, mark their + and values, then graph these coordinates: (0,0), (5,5), (-3,1), (-2,-8), (1,-4) AIM: HOW DO YOU GRAPH POINTS ON THE COORDINATE PLANE? Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to: locate a position on a coordinate plane when given the coordinates (pointing, using pencil or manipulative).

Lesson: 1. We just graphed coordinates in our opening exercise. Each coordinate is represented by numbers in an ordered pair, (x,y). The (0,0) coordinate you graphed is called the origin, where x and y axes intersect. What definition could you give for the verb graph? 2. Try some of these examples to test your knowledge!

1. Graph to plot or place a dot (point) to mark a place (coordinate).

2.

the horizontal number line is called: - the vertical number line is called: - the numbers (5,8) are called an: - these are used to graph coordinates:

3.

The X and Y-axes divide the coordinate plane into 4 regions (Quadrants) where coordinates are labeled. [label Quadrants IIV ] What definition could you give for coordinate plane? Try some of these examples to test your knowledge!

3. Coordinate plane a 2-dimensional area in space where coordinates are graphed at a distance from the origin in 4 Quadrants.

4.

4.

- the upper-left region of the coordinate plane is called: - the bottom-right region of the coordinate plane is called: - the point where the axes meet (0,0) is called:

Activity: Students will: 1. Randomly place 4 points anywhere on the coordinate plane and name them with any capital letters. 2. Write the ordered pair to the right of each capital letter to locate their coordinates. Tell in which Quadrant, or on which axis, each point lies.

Teacher will: 1. Allow student to plot several coordinates on his/her own. 2. 3. Monitor points and correct/assist as necessary. Repeat coordinate location if necessary (auditory); point to written location (visual) After each coordinate placement, tell student if placement is correct or incorrect and provide feedback.

3.

4.

Summary: Collect student worksheets. Discuss some of the key ideas of this lesson (over, then up; point placement, etc). What are some of the careers that coordinate geometry applies to? (construction, design, etc).
