The Alstom

From the

CLeaN Power ToDaY!

As one of the most reliable of the renewable energy resources, geothermal power plays a key role in Alstoms clean power offering. Irrespective of weather conditions, a geothermal plant will provide a steady output and respond easily to changes in demand. Alstom pioneered the commercial exploitation of geothermal power in New Zealand in the 1950s. Today, we offer geothermal solutions worldwide, based on our global footprint and technological lead.

PLaNt INteGratorTM
Improving the efficiency of a power plant depends on fine tuning complex interactions between diverse sub-systems. Building on decades of turnkey solutions expertise, Alstom is able to reframe any specific question in terms of the impact on the overall availability and flexibility of the plant. We call it the Plant IntegratorTM approach: it helps operators to maximise their total plant performance while fully complying with environmental, regulatory and commercial constraints.

LifeCYcLe MaNaGemeNt
When considering the environmental balance of a given fuel type or technology, one has to take into account the full lifecycle. This means assessing the entire process from procurement and construction to operation and maintenance. Alstoms support and commitment throughout the component or plant lifecycle allows owners to maximise their return on investment while minimising negative environmental side effects.

Alstom offers a complete portfolio of power generation equipment and services for all fuel types. By 2030 the world will have seen a significant change in the power generation mix with an increased share of renewable power. Alstom has a strong role to play in the booming geothermal power market.

From components to

Power plant development

Geothermal energy is available adjacent to porous and fractured hot rock along the earths tectonic plate fault lines. Once a suitable site is located, Alstom can help you analyse the geothermal resource and design a suitably optimised plant configuration adapted to the local climate, geology and terrain. Our goal is to increase your project realisation chances while lowering your development risk. We procure opportunities for our customers with the following services: Geothermal steam analysis Early stage plant configuration Project planning and advisory services

Turbine and component supply

Geothermal turbines must withstand corrosive impurities, wet steam and seismic conditions. Building on Alstoms extensive experience in industrial, conventional and nuclear steam turbines, we offer robust designs and durable components that are adapted to the challenges of the geothermal steam resources. All our plant systems are designed to resist wear and damage and to facilitate practical inspection, maintenance and replacement. We engineer reliable solutions with the following services: Turbine selection and design Component and material sourcing Manufacturing Transport and assembly

Our engineering team assesses steam conditions, site location and commercial requirements to help you optimise the plant configuration and maximise project value.

Optimising the value chain

Power plant construction

As the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) provider, Alstom has commissioned more than 360 conventional steam power plants during the last 30 years. Drawing on this expertise, Alstom now provides full EPC services for geothermal power plants. We construct optimised solutions covering the: Steam receiving Turbine and generator Condensing, gas ejection and cooling system Power plant distributed control system (DCS) Piping, valves and power island balance of plant (BOP) Electrical cabling and high-voltage power export Civil engineering Plant construction management

Operation and maintenance

Having supplied major components to more than 1170GW of power generation around the world, Alstom is not just a leading global original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and an EPC provider. In addition, we are also responsible for the operation and maintenance (O&M) of a major portion of non-Alstom equipment and plants worldwide. The base-load nature of geothermal steam plants means that unplanned downtime is especially costly. We recognise the tension between maintaining everyday baseload plant output and the need to undertake preventative measures to avoid costly unplanned outages. We offer a range of operation and maintenance services packaged either as long-term service agreements combined with the plant warranty, or as troubleshooting services on a case-by-case basis.

Adding long-term value

The Plant IntegratorTM approach creates added value for the client by optimising the entire value chain and the overall plant performance. As an OEM, EPC and O&M provider, Alstom has a unique perspective that allows the analysis of the whole plant and the full lifecycle as an integrated system. Using proven models and established benchmarks, specific investment costs can be understood in their true context. By revealing the impact on the key performance parameters efficiency, reliability and availability, we help you to understand direct investments in terms of the ultimate impact on plant profitability.

Protecting performance

Tough

Proven and validated technology

The geothermal products and services offered by Alstom incorporate the latest know-how and technology focussed on the particular challenges of the geothermal industry. Alstom turbines offer the ideal combination of performance and durability. In geothermal, we use robust direct drive turbines to cope with the demands of wet steam with dissolved impurities. By working with optimised blade forms, fewer stages and broader clearances, our turbines cope reliably with even the most challenging steam compositions. Flexible configurations: Alstom can provide plant from 15 MW to 135 MW in order to meet each customers needs: Smallest plant layout of approximately 15-35 MW using single flow turbine module For mediu m size plants (35-65MW): plant layout based around our single flow module in 50Hz and double flow module in 60Hz For larger steam fields with proven steam resources in 50Hz markets Alstom offers power plant sizes in the 65-135MW range based around a double-flow turbine configuration, which offers both excellent performance and economies of scale. For each project, Alstom always take into account issues like safety, cost effectiveness and to offer the most optimised solution.

Selected Design Features

The plant layout and component design protect auxiliary and electrical systems from corrosion that could occur during steam venting. To reduce erosion of the moving blades, efficient Alstom water traps drain excessive steam condensate between each turbine stage. Instant closure of the inlet valves is critical to the safety of a geothermal plant. Alstom valves are specially designed to prevent blocking through fouling or scaling. 10 Labyrinth seals are used for the main shaft, these being simple, robust and easily maintained. Triple control security prevents backflow from the condenser to the turbine. The design of Alstoms steam strainer reduces particle ingressions with a minimum pressure drop. Hybrid ejector and vacuum pump systems extract noncondensable gases from the condenser to maintain condenser efficiency. The Alstom distributed control system (DCS) minimises false alarms and maximises plant protection.

Materials
Alstom geothermal steam turbines are built with special steel alloys and are heat-treated to protect against the corrosive effects of dissolved gases, impurities and water droplets. Induction hardening or stellite shielding can be employed to extend the lifetime of the last-stage blades where lower temperatures increase the risk of water droplet erosion.

EPC and service offerings

Our flexible plant offering can be fully adapted to your needs. Because there is no reliability without assured steam quality, Alstom insists on a minimum scope of the steam enhancement and power island systems. However, by ordering a complete turnkey power plant, Alstom can take care of every aspect of design, engineering, procurement and construction. Owners, especially independent power producers, can also benefit from the addition of an Alstom extended service contract to cover the day-to-day running and maintenance of the plant. As a leading global O&M provider Alstom can tailor a package to exactly suit your plant and business strategy.

Worldwide presence
At the commonly used depths of up to 3,000 meters, accessible geothermal resources are unevenly distributed, concentrated near tectonic plate boundaries where the Earths crust is thinner. 24 countries produce geothermal electricity, most of them in the Pacifics Ring of Fire. The vast majority of generation capacity is concentrated in a handful of countries: the U.S, the Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico, Iceland and New Zealand. Alstoms geothermal competence, based out of Mexico, leverages the full global reach of the Alstom network.
