Access to reliable and affordable power is the key to an improved standard of living for everyone. However, it is essential that this power be produced without negative environmental side effects. Alstoms Plant Integrator solutions maximise
performance, while our extensive range of environmental products enable us to supply the cleanest power plants in the industry. Alstoms Clean Power Today strategy recognises the need to improve the environmental balance of legacy plants, while increasing the adoption of new clean energy solutions.

The Alstom
From the
PLaNt INteGratorTM
Improving the efficiency of a power plant depends on fine tuning complex interactions between diverse sub-systems. Building on decades of turnkey solutions expertise, Alstom is able to reframe any specific question in terms of the impact on the overall availability and flexibility of the plant. We call it the Plant IntegratorTM approach: it helps operators to maximise their total plant performance while fully complying with environmental, regulatory and commercial constraints.
LifeCYcLe MaNaGemeNt
When considering the environmental balance of a given fuel type or technology, one has to take into account the full lifecycle. This means assessing the entire process from procurement and construction to operation and maintenance. Alstoms support and commitment throughout the component or plant lifecycle allows owners to maximise their return on investment while minimising negative environmental side effects.

Protecting performance
Tough
Materials
Alstom geothermal steam turbines are built with special steel alloys and are heat-treated to protect against the corrosive effects of dissolved gases, impurities and water droplets. Induction hardening or stellite shielding can be employed to extend the lifetime of the last-stage blades where lower temperatures increase the risk of water droplet erosion.

Worldwide presence
At the commonly used depths of up to 3,000 meters, accessible geothermal resources are unevenly distributed, concentrated near tectonic plate boundaries where the Earths crust is thinner. 24 countries produce geothermal electricity, most of them in the Pacifics Ring of Fire. The vast majority of generation capacity is concentrated in a handful of countries: the U.S, the Philippines, Indonesia, Mexico, Iceland and New Zealand. Alstoms geothermal competence, based out of Mexico, leverages the full global reach of the Alstom network.
With more than 52,000 employees in 70 countries around the globe, Alstom Power combines local presence and knowledge with global resources in order to deliver the technology and service that meet the high expectations and needs of our customers.

Wairakei
New Zealand
The Wairakei plant is a reference case for Alstom innovation: it was the second geothermal plant in the world to begin commercial operation and the first to exploit very hot water as the source of steam. With suitable retrofits and upgrades, the Wairakei plant has operated steadily for more than 50 years at 90% of maximum output, supporting New Zealands renewable energy requirements. Lahendong
Indonesia
With nearly 200 active volcanoes and 100 geothermal fields spread over its territory, Indonesia possesses an estimated 40% of the worlds total geothermal potential. Located in the province of North Sulawesi, the Lahendong geothermal power plant provides electricity to the Minahasa district, about 30km south of the provinces capital city Manado. Operating as baseload power since 2001, Unit 1 of the Lahendong geothermal power plant represents one of the cleanest and most cost-effective sources of electric power available in Indonesia. Los Azufres
Mexico
Mexico is the fourth largest geothermal energy producer worldwide after the USA, the Philippines and Indonesia. The Los Azufres II geothermal power plant is located in the Mexican state of Michoacan, 200 km west of Mexico City and only 80 km east of Alstoms Morelia manufacturing site, a state-of-the-art centre in the manufacturing and assembly of turbines, generators, large-sized-diaphragm and blade fabrication. Operating as baseload power since opening in 2003, units 13 16 at Los Azufres II feed the nations electrical distribution grid and in total are capable of producing more than 800 GWh of clean electricity per year. In addition, these units represent one of the most cost-effective sources of electricity available in Mexico. Customer:............................ Los Humeros
Mexico
In 2009, Alstom was awarded a turnkey contract for Los Humeros II Phase A, followed by a turnkey contract in January 2010 for Phase B, located in the Mexican state of Puebla. Los Humeros II geothermal power plant will use the geothermal resource using drilled wells to extract steam from a depth of up to 2,000 meters where the geothermal reservoir is located. When completed in May 2012, the plants will produce more than 400 GWh of clean electricity reducing Mexicos CO2 emissions by 230,000 tonnes per year.
