The Most Fun You Can Have Being Bad
Grand Theft Auto V was released in September to rave reviews as gamers drove, biked and
ew across Los Santos, engaging in all sorts of debauchery.
But underneath all of the good times as players broke bad, there was a lot of speculation
surrounding the games announced online component, which was scheduled for release two
weeks after the single player. Would it work properly? What could players do? Would it
be fun?
Thankfully, those questions have been answered this way: Not at rst, a lot of stuff and
ABSOLUTELY YES.
The games online mode got off to a rocky start with disappearing characters, an inability
to get into games with friends and the mode just not working. But once that was xed up
(and there are still some problems but the game works for the most part), players were able
to group up with their friends to steal meth, y helicopters, parachute into military bases
pretty much anything they want to do.
The online mode is the rst time that Rockstar has offered up their open world for friends to
explore together. There are races, co-op missions, death matches, boats, planes and other
missions players can perform together to rank up, increase their skills and earn money to
buy new boats and other tools. Starting the online mode puts the players online character
into Los Santos, free to do whatever they want.
Listen, Grand Theft Auto gets a lot of ak for being a violent, graphic and over-the-top game
franchise. Rockstar pushes the limit every game, adding in new things that gets parents and
organizations upset about violence in video games. And those criticisms are sometimes
valid. In fact, Ive never been a big fan of the series because of the violence and open world
content, which often makes me uncomfortable.
But the online mode is some of the most fun Ive ever had playing a video game. I still avoid
running over pedestrians and murdering people for no reason, but now I run around an
open world with friends, creating our own stories and events by just doing whatever we
want. A friend of mine spends all his time inltrating the military base so he can steal a jet,
and often I join him, jumping out of the helicopter at max altitude and parachuting in. The
game creates dynamic storytelling moments not through scripted events, but by allowing
players the freedom to do whatever they want.
Yes, players can buy a prostitute (and the game isnt shy about what happens in the car), but
they can also jump in a truck together, drive to the top of a mountain and then four-wheel
their way back into the city. Of course, they might run into naked people living in a shanty
town, but thats the risk you take for adventuring outside the city of Los Santos.
You might disagree with the content of the game, and there are valid arguments against
some of Grand Theft Autos innards, but refusing to play the game would be denying
yourself of one of the rst opportunities to play in an open world with friends on a console.
Now all they need to do is make Skyrim multiplayer and I might never leave my house.

Grand Theft Auto IV took GTA to a new
level by introducing a protagonist who
wasnt an evil degenerate, but a likable
immigrant who got caught up with bad
groups while avoiding his overseas
past.
The new GTA looks to provide the same
mature foundation while providing
players with endless hours of gangster
antics. The game follows three main
characters, Michael, Franklin and Trevor,
all who have their own motivations and
storylines that intertwine as the men try to
make it in Los Santos, the biggest world
Rockstar has ever created.
The game has its moments of upsetting
violence, but the freedom that GTA
games provide is unmatched. If you
dont like the story content, you can do
whatever you want.
But dont completely overlook the story
because Rockstar always gets great voice
actors and their writing is top notch, with
this game focusing on how far people
will go to maintain their lifestyles, keep
power or get out from the bottom.
Overall, the game is improved over
anything else Rockstar has released.
The shooting mechanics have been
improved, the AI is smarter than usual
and the game is a ton of fun.

As a kid I believed that contemporary pop music was all that mattered.
As a teenager I came to the realization that independent music had the
advanced edge. In college I dug deep into the classics. And now that Im
in my thirties, I nd myself listening to more and more ambient music all
the time. Life is increasingly exhausting. I dont want to hear songs about
the pains of youth. Mortality is becoming a clearer and clearer concept.
I need music that talks about the woes of existence. Ambient music seems
to be the only musical genre that understands me.
Oneohtrix Point Never is a bad marketing move as far as band names
go. R Plus Seven is an equally bad marketing move as far as record titles
go. But ambient music isnt about making the feasible moves. Its about
making the infeasible moves.
Lets start by
analyzing the cover art. In my opinion, the cover art is much more
meaningful when it comes to an ambient record because it is the rst
and perhaps most important clue as to the headspace the artist wishes
to place you in. A dark room with muted grey colors, with a window
providing a narrow strip of light and looking out on a tiny sliver of a
blue, hopeful sky. This scene brings to my mind two striking images:
Platos cave of shadows and Stanley Kubricks black obelisk from 2001:
A Space Odyssey, only the real obelisk is a washed-out gold color, and
it is merely the shadow of the obelisk that is black. The Plato reference
provides a very existential and reective tone about the nature of
knowledge and what we view as reality. The obelisk suggest for me that
this is going to somehow relate to technology and the future, as well as
the question of how we are to understand the progress of mankind.
The record opens with a long, curious chord that once again brings to
mind Stanley Kubricks 2001: A Space Odyssey. At this point in the
review process, I
decided to put on
2001: A Space
Odyssey to see if the
music would match up with the lm and tell me even more about what I
was listening to. I hit play on the opening track, Boring Angel, as soon
as the MGM Lion appeared on the screen. Nothing matched up, but it
was a nice way to experience the record anyway.
R Plus Seven can be very disjointed at times arrhythmic, quick cuts,
clashing transition-less transitions, contrasting textures, crowding of
voices but as a whole, the chaos is always warm and there seems
to be an overarching unity to the atmospheres created, as well as a
forward progress melodically. To me, the record sounds very much like
a city. I can hear the metal of structures and the hum of machinery, the
concrete corridors of the streets and all of the people in windows and
on the sidewalks. There is chaos in the multitude of voices ghting to be
heard; it is fast paced and exhausting, at times panicked and feverish,
with constantly changing landscapes as if you were driving through city
blocks watching the concrete jungle all around you, this organism of the
future.
The record opens on a warm organ, something organic, which is then
penetrated by arpeggiated synthesizers, a symbol of both man and
technology, and ends with a choir of youth over a bed of metallic
synthesizers. The sounds of space. The sounds of the progress of
mankind. A sound of hope. And drifting.

As a rst generation American from a Vietnamese family that was uprooted by war, I
have come to know both cultures of my heritage, says Chris Le, the owner of Coriander
Caf, on the back of the menu. Paying homage and respect to my roots, we have created
a truly authentic Vietnamese experience based on family recipes passed down by my
mother.
Chris Le works with his partner and the chef, Jeremiah Caldwell, to bring these recipes to
life and they are delicious.
The only time I used to touch pho (pronounced fuh and not foe) would be when I was
sick. Pho is a noodle soup with your choice of meats and a side of herbs, like cilantro and
basil. I mean, I used to think it was okay, but back then I wouldve much rather had some
spicy and exciting Thai curry. Turns out that I just hadnt had the right stuff. It also turns out
that Vietnamese isnt limited to noodle soups.
When I went to Coriander Caf with my
friend, we were too starving to even think
about waiting for the entre. Appetizers
fo sho! We settled on shrimp spring rolls
complete with a refreshing and invigorating
combination of cucumber, carrots, lettuce,
Vietnamese coriander, cilantro, noodles and
shrimp all the pretty colors of which we
could see through the rice paper wrapping.
The best part was honestly the peanut sauce
on the side (and you can add crunchies for
50 cents). I could smother peanut sauce on
anything pizza, burgers, ice cream but
seriously.
The entre was where I was thoroughly impressed. Ive had pho that tasted like the
sodium-lled broth from a can with meat from who knows what. Coriander Caf gave me
the option of two meats, and I chose the lemongrass chicken and the sesame ginger beef.
Wow, the meat was marinated and seasoned to perfection, and thankfully they didnt
skimp on it!
The best part of the meal, though, was
the fact it tasted so fresh. Knowing that
Coriander Caf really does care about
freshness and taste is one thing, but
experiencing it makes you a believer. It
uses lots of local, organic and fair trade
ingredients, which helps the economy
and the purity of the food (like Artisans
Pride of Norman). Thats always a cause
I can get down with local, organic
produce. Maybe its all in my head (I
dont think so), but I believe it makes a
difference in the avor.
Though the pho was fresh and avorful, there are other options: a banh mi sandwich,
which is a French baguette stuffed with crispy cucumbers, jalepeos, cilantro, pate
(spreadable ground meat), aioli and pickled daikon (radish) and carrots; lettuce wraps; a
rice bowl (meat with the banh mi vegetables over rice); noodle salad, which comes with
an egg roll; and even a kids meal with a choice of rice or noodles with an egg roll and
meat.
Coriander Caf showed me that noodle soup is certainly not just for when Im sick. Their
pho was aromatic and avorful undoubtedly one of the best Ive ever had.

Gamessometimes theyre played for fun. Sometimes theyre played for blood. For those
who are truly competitive, the preferred outcome in any competition is always sheer
dominance.
For the case of this article, Im not going to concentrate on
the types of games played with tennis balls, dice or any other
tangible accessory. This is about the good old-fashioned mind
game.
Are mind games a part of love? Even though they are, in my
opinion they shouldnt be. Emotional brain twisters come in all
shapes and sizes and I dont like any of them. I think tricks are
for kids and assertiveness is sexy, but Im in the minority.
In the era of touch screens and familiarity with the last name
Kardashian, having game and playing love games is really popular. Most would say
that game-playing in the love world is essential, actually, because its the status quo.
Nowadays if youre into someone, you:
1. Dont call them.
2. Dont act too nice to them.
3. Dont act too energized around them so you dont come off as
goofy.
4. Dont show how much youre attracted to them.
5. Keep them confused about your intentions.
Wah what? How is this logical? Misleading someone is an odd way of
getting them to trust you. Being coy, coercive or mysterious when it comes to dating doesnt
make any sense to me.
A spade is a spade. If youre being coy, you dont have the guts to say what you need to
say, or youre dangling your carrot of information in someones face because you feel like
being an extra big a--hole.
Mysteriousmysterious means obscure in nature. If someone seems hard to get to know,
like theyre holding back or playing it safe, theres usually a reason. I understand privacy
and needing to trust someone before you release certain details of your life, but if youve
been putting some time in with someone and they still seem mysterious, then be wary.
Relationships are about sharing. Withholding information is concealing. Concealing
information allows ample room for misconception and deception. Dont fall for it. Truth-
withholding is the evil twin sister of the outright lie. Better to stay away from that family all
together.
From what Ive seen and learned, when it comes to establishing and sustaining a good
relationship, transparency is key. Mind games are toxic to couples. You want someone to
like you? You need to show them who you REALLY are from
the get go. Otherwise youre wasting your time. If you feel like
youre tweaking your behavior for whatever reason, and the
person youre tweaking it for seems to be really into you, your
expiration clock has already started ticking.
Be yourself because thats what is impressive and rare these
days. Tell the truth and go with your instinct. People like to be
liked, so tell that guy or girl how amazing you think they are.
Step up and let them know where you stand. Be authentic. Be
forthright.
Games are for X-Box, not relationships. Set down the mind
controller and plug into honesty.
