Tenth Sunday After Pentecost

August 9, 2009

There are many in the Church as well as out of it who need to

learn that Christianity is neither creed nor a ceremonial, but a
life vitally connected with a loving Christ. — Josiah Strong
We are missional Anglicans seeking the kingdom of God
in our hearts, our homes, our church and our world.

Sunday Mornings @ Good Shepherd

Worship 9:00

VISITORS
We consider it a great privilege to worship the Lord Jesus Christ
with you today. In fact, we receive your presence as a gracious gift
from God. In return, we would love to bless you according to your
needs. Please let us know how we can do so.

PRAYER
If you would like personal prayer this morning for any reason,
please make your way to the hallway during communion. One of
our intercessors would be honored to pray with or for you.

3
As you enter the church, please prepare your heart for worship.
The Prelude
Your Grace Is Enough
Great is your faithfulness O God of Jacob
You wrestle with the sinner's heart
You lead me by still waters into mercy
Where nothing can keep us apart
So remember your people
Remember your children
Remember your promise O God
(Chorus)
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough
Your grace is enough for me
Great is your love and justice God
You use the weak to lead the strong
You lead us in the song of your salvation
And all your people sing along
Forever
Give thanks to the Lord, Our God and King
His love endures forever
For He is good He is above all things
His love endures forever
Sing praise, sing praise
With a mighty hand and an outstretched arm
His love endures forever
For the life that's been reborn
His love endures forever
Sing praise, sing praise
(Chorus)
Forever God is faithful
Forever God is strong
Forever God is with us
Forever forever
From the rising to the setting sun
His love endures forever
And by the grace of God we will carry on
His love endures forever
Sing praise, sing praise

4
HOLY EUCHARIST
The Opening Acclamation
Celebrant: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
People: And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.
The Songs of Praise
All Creatures of Our God and King
All creatures of our God and King
Lift up your voice and with us sing
O praise Him alleluia
Thou burning sun with golden beam
Thou silver moon with softer gleam
O praise Him, O praise Him
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia
Thou rushing wind that are so strong
Ye clouds that sail in heaven along
O praise Him alleluia
Thou rising moon in praise rejoice
Ye lights of evening find a voice
O praise Him, O praise Him
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia
Let all things their creator bless
And worship Him in humbleness
O praise Him, Alleluia
Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son
And Praise the Spirit three in one
O praise Him, O praise Him
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia
(repeat Alleluias)

The Collect of the Day

People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Let us pray.
Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always
those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without
you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Sermon

6
The Nicene Creed
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Leader and People pray responsively.

Father, we pray for your holy catholic Church;

That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you;
That your Name may be glorified by all people.

We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons;

That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;
That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;

That our works may find favor in your sight.

Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble;

That they may be delivered from their distress.

Give to the departed eternal rest.

Let light perpetual shine upon them.

We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;
May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.

Silence

9
The Confession of Sin
And now, O Father, we pray to you also for our greatest need, the for-
giveness of our sins:

Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father;

in your compassion forgive us our sins,
known and unknown,
things done and left undone;
and so uphold us by your Spirit
that we may live and serve you in newness of life,
to the honor and glory of your Name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Priest: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins
through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all good-
ness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal
life. Amen.

The Peace
Celebrant: May the peace of the Lord be always with you.
People: And also with you.

The Announcements
Annual Meeting
This morning, immediately following the worship service, we will hold our
annual meeting. During the meeting we will elect new vestry members and
discuss new initiatives for the coming year.
Promoting Good Shepherd @ Davidson’s Concert on the Green Series
During the next concert held on the Davidson Green (the grassy area in
front of the library) we would like to bless the people in attendance, all the
while “getting our name out there in the community.” In order to do so, we
need members of our church who are willing to attend the event and to
engage the crowd. Please reserve next Sunday, August 16th.
VWAP Reflection Dinner
On Thursday, August 27th from 6:30-8 pm, all are invited to an event cele-
brating the recent mission trip to Philippi. The evening will include a DVD,
Powerpoint slide show, and personal testimonies. The cost is $3 for adults
(children eat free). This event is open to all church members and invited

Bring-
Bring-a-Friend Picnic

and bring a friend. Let us kick-off the fall season with a big celebration.
Present Sermon Series: Shining Like Stars in the World
Exploring Paul’s Letter to the Philippians, we are setting aside twenty-four
weeks for intentional Christian growth. Imitating Christ's humility. Breaking
with our sinful pasts. Pressing on toward heaven's goal. Doing all things
through Christ who gives us strength. Shining like stars in the world. These
themes will guide us through the summer and prepare us for the new sea-
son ahead. Come and see.
Morning Prayer: Rite Two
Tuesdays. 9:30 a.m. Church sanctuary. Bring your Book of Common Prayer
(or use one of ours).

The Offertory
I Boast No More
No more, my God, I boast no more
Of all the duties I have done
I quit the hopes I held before
To trust the merits of Thy Son
(Chorus)
No more my God, no more my God,
No more my God, I boast no more.
Now for the loss I bear His name
What was my gain I count my loss
My former pride, I call my shame
And nail my glory to His cross
The best obedience of my hands
Dares not appear before Thy throne
But faith can answer Thy demands
By pleading what my Lord has done

The Mystery of Our Faith

Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and
ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

Celebrant: Alleluia! Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us.
People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia!

The Invitation
Celebrant: These are the gifts of God for the people of God.
Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you,
and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

All baptized disciples of Jesus Christ are welcome at God’s table. Please be seated
until your row is invited to come.

At this time, parents may return to the nursery to escort your children back to the
sanctuary for communion.

14
The Communion Hymns
Please be seated and sing.

We Do Not Presume
We do not presume
To come to Your table
Trusting in our own righteousness
For we are not worthy
So much as to gather
The crumbs from under Your table
But trusting, O Lord
In Your great and manifold mercies
For You are the same Lord
Whose nature's always to have mercy
So cleanse us and feed us
With the body and blood of Your Son
That we may live in Him
And that He may live in us
For ever and ever
Amen

Offering
The sun cannot compare to the glory of Your love
There is no shadow in Your presence
No mortal man would dare to stand before Your throne
Before the Holy One of heaven
It's only by Your blood, and it's only through Your mercy
Lord I come
(Chorus)
I bring an offering of worship to my King
No one on earth deserves the praises that I sing
Jesus may You receive the honor that You're due
O Lord I bring an offering to You

15
The Post-
Post-Communion Prayer
Please stand and say together.

Almighty and everliving God,

we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food
of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ;
and for assuring us in these holy mysteries
that we are living members of the Body of your Son,
and heirs of your eternal kingdom.
And now, Father, send us out
to do the work you have given us to do,
to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord.
To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit,
be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen

Shout to the Lord

My Jesus my Saviour
Lord there is none like You
All of my days I want to praise
The wonders of Your mighty love
My comfort my Shelter

Let every breath all that I am
Never cease to worship You
Shout to the Lord, all the earth let us sing
Power and majesty, praise to the King
Mountains bow down and the seas will roar
At the sound of Your name
I sing for joy at the work of Your hands
Forever I'll love You, forever I'll stand
Nothing compares to the promise
I have in You
