So that you can become a water pollution expert, first we'll investigate different kinds of water pollution. And when you're ready, you can help clean up an oil spill! One kind of water pollution, which is usually the most common, is called O!"#!$%O!A& and is made up of conventional pollutants. onventional pollutants are solid particles and matter found in our water. 'ost of the pollution you can see is conventional. ans, bottles, paper(()ust about anything((can be a conventional pollutant. *ou can see conventional pollutants in the picture above. onventional pollutants cause a wide variety of environmental problems. $he solids suspended in the water can block the sun's rays, and this blocking disrupts the carbon dioxide+oxygen conversion process. $his process is vital to an a,uatic food chain. Sometimes the solid pollution is so bad, the water becomes unusable to humans and animals. $he best way to remove conventional pollutants is to run the water through a treatment plant. %n treatment plants the water is skimmed, run through several filters, and settled. $his removes about -. percent of the pollutants. $he remaining pollution is decomposed by tiny pollution(eating microorganisms. 'icroorganisms are living things that are so tiny you need a microscope to see them. Another type of pollution is called !O!( O!"#!$%O!A& and is made up of non( conventional pollutants. !on(conventional pollutants are more dangerous to the environment than conventional pollutants. !on(conventional pollutants are dissolved metals, both toxic /harmful0 and nontoxic /not harmful0. 'any factories dump these pollutants into the water as byproducts of their production process. $he most devastating type of non(conventional pollution is an oil spill. 'ore than 12,... oil spills occur each year in the 3nited States. !on(conventional pollutants are difficult to remove because they are dissolved in the water. #ven though you can't see them most of the time, they are dangerous. 'icroorganisms, like the ones used to eat pollution in water treatment facilities, are the best way to get rid of non(conventional pollution. 4owever, not all pollution can be removed from the water (( even with the most advanced technology.

Land pollutants
Soil contamination results from a number of causes, including the dumping of hazardous substances, pesticide and fertilizer use, and industrial or chemical processes. Pollutants in soils can also be transported to groundwater sources and into the air. Contaminated soils are often a major concern at Brownfields and Superfund sites. Common soil contaminants include arsenic, benzene, cyanide, lead and mercury. The EP teams with state and local authorities to assess the le!el of contamination in soils and de!elop new soil cleansing technologies. The agency is also acti!e in promoting alternati!es to reduce soil contamination for the industrial and agricultural sectors.
