Wind a warp o 239 ends 3 yd long (add to warp
width and length or larger and/or more towels).
Sley 2/dent in a 0-dent reed and thread the
shats ollowing either Figure or 2, page 3).
For each towel: 8egin by weaving 2" in plain
weave, leaving a wet tail that is about three
times as long as the width o the warp. Using
this tail, hemstitch over the last 2 rows, in-
cluding 5 ends in each stitch (6 ends in the 2
stitches at start and inish so the threading
units o 5 ends coincide with the rest o the
hemstitching). Place a #2 knitting needle or
heavy cord in the next plain-weave shed,
weave 2 picks, and hemstitch as beore.
Weave 4 picks plain weave and remove spac-
er. Then ollow the selected treadling or the
remainder o the towel. (Use Figure or
8-shat looms limited to ten treadles, Figure
3 or 8-shat table looms or looms with 5
treadles, the design created by Figure is very
similar to the Figure 3 design.) nd with 2"
plain weave (the ladder hemstitching is used at
only one end o each towel). kepeat or our
towels, separating towels with 2 picks in a con-
trasting color. (There are ewer picks per inch
in the 4-shat towels because the interlacement
includes more plain weave than in the lacier
8-shat towels, to weave the designs to square
in the 8-shat towels, use a lighter beat in areas
o more lace, always aiming or 20 ppi.)
kemove the towels rom the loom and cut apart
at contrasting-color marker threads. Turn hems
twice at both ends o each towel, or the end
with the ladder hemstitching, turn so the irst
old meets the hemstitching.
Wash the towels by hand or machine with hot
water. kemove rom machine and block lat on
a smooth surace (such as a countertop or the
top o a washing machine). Allow to partly dry
and then press irmly with a hot iron on both
sides until completely dry.

hese towels were woven on a table loom with

a weaving width limited to 12". Tey would
make wonderful dish towels, and as guest towels
would be even more lovely if they were a bit
larger. To increase their width, add to the number
of threading repeats (10 threads or
1
2" for each
additional threading repeat on four shafts, 50
threads or 5" for each additional threading repeat
on eight shafts). To increase woven length, add
1
2" for each treadling repeat on four shafts and
3
3
4" for each treadling repeat on eight shafts
using the treadling in Figure 1 or 6
1
4" using the
treadling in Figure 3. On both the 4-shaft and
8-shaft threadings, many dierent tie-up and
treadling options can be used; see Resources.
