BUILDING APPRAISAL

IIFM BHOPAL was designed in 1988 by Anant Raje, Amita Raje and Gautam Bhatia. It Is situated in Bhopal and has a 17500 sq.m built up area on a 65 hectare hilly site.

INTRODUCTION

The building is a mixture of modern and old architecture. It has got some of its very own distinctive features. The building is a mixture of modern and old architecture. LOCATION

The institute is located in Nehru Nagar, in the southernwest corner of the city of Bhopal. It is on a hill that overlooks the Bhadbhada barrage

The architect was inspired by the historical town of Mandu for his work at IIFM. One of the prominent feature of this architecture is a giant arc,as seen in the thumbnail.

BUILDING PLAN

The faade of the building is mainly made of stone instead of brickwork. The stones are coated with plaster and a rough texture is provided to the stones.
The entire campus is constructed out of brick masonry walls.

STRUCTURAL MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES

The areas around the openings are coated in rough kota stones and slate. The remaining wall of the exterior masonry wall surfaces is plastered with stone washed grit. Coarse stone masonry retaining walls are used for creating terraces and steps on various levels in the courts. Reinforced concrete is used for the internal frame structure. Lintels are left with exposed concreting spaces.

Corridors are the connecting tunnels between the closed and open spaces.

CIRCULATION

There are stepped corridors at various places which are open from the two sides and just sheltered on top.
A few corridors have natural lighting provided alternatively.

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN

Recessed windows are used to keep the direct sunlight from falling onto panes and thus keeping the room cooler.

RECESSED WINDOWS:

The openings are recessed into shadow pockets which became the dominant architectural feature, controlling and directing scale and proportion throughout the complex.

The academic complex has the court surrounded by classrooms, a library, an auditorium and seminar halls. The library building being four storeyed serves as the focal point of the academic court.
Courtyards provide as an activity space as well as helps in saving the building from being claustrophobic.

The courtyard planning is done keeping in mind the macro and micro climate of the site. There is a courtyard, have long stretched artificial pond with fountains. It runs all through the breadth of the building. Its basic purpose is to provide cool breeze inside the building.

The courtyard which is directly accessible from the reception are is very huge.

Open semi spaces, which are surrounded by walls consisting of segmental and semicircular arches.

The

play of sunlight on the arches,They allow light inside.

The faade of the building has got two types of arches: 1. Semicircular arch 2. Segmaental arch

Semicircular arch is at the top while Segmental arch is at the bottom. These arches give a grand look to the building as well as give a sense of openness. Moreover it gives the required amount of shade and allows sunlight to pass at the same time. The arches are an important feature of the building.

CLIMATE RESPONSIVE ARCHITECTURE

between the dormitories and the academic block create a buffer zone besides providing shaded walkways connecting the group of dormitories.

There are water bodies all over the site. Water is carried in narrow channels to the green areas. A water reservoir on the top of one of the hillocks gives d sharp focus to the landscape.

The water body helps in regulating the temperature of d building and keeping the air cool.
