Threadedparts,likescrews,bolts,nuts,etc.areusedtofastenvariouspartsandcreateassemblies. Intechnicaldrawingthedetailedrepresentationofthethread (figurea)shouldonlybeusedwhenabsolutely necessaryandthehelixshouldberepresentedbystraightlines(figureb). Normally,byconventiontherepresentationofthreadsandthreadedpartsissimplified. Forvisiblescrewthreadsthecrestsofthreadsinviewsandsectionsarerepresentedbyacontinuouswideline. Therootsarerepresentedbyacontinuousnarrowline. Thedistancebetweentheselinesshouldbeascloseaspossible totherealdepthofthethread,butwhenthisis notpossibleitshouldbe: twicethewidthofthethickline, or0.7mm,whicheverislarger. Onanendviewofascrewthreadthethreadrootisrepresentedbyaportionofacircledrawnwithacontinuous narrowlineandapproximatelyequaltothreequartersofthecircumferenceofacompletecircle. Whenitisnecessarytorepresenthiddenscrewsandthreads,thecrestandrootofthethreadarerepresentedby narrowdashedlines.

Thenominaldiameterd alwaysreferstothecrestoftheexternalthreadandtotheroot oftheinternalthread. Thedimensionofthethreadlengthreferstothefullthreadlength. Variousabbreviationsareusedtodescribedifferenttypesofthreads,accordingto standards(e.g.M metric,Tr trapezoidal,G gas,externalpipethread,Rd round thread,etc.).
