SMART Board and how to create their own notebooks, add hyperlinks, add sound/pictures, and how to gather data using SMART Exchange. In addition, this workshop was to provide information on Web 2.0 tools. The workshop was given on one weekday afternoon to selected teachers who expressed interest in the content provided within the workshop. The workshop included a SMART Board demonstration (with a Voki), pre-assessment, and post-assessment. The teachers also had the option of following along online as I discussed Web 2.0 tools, SMART exchange, and adding elements to SMART Board notebooks. In efforts to prepare and use time efficiently, the pre-assessment was given to them earlier. The reason was to gather data prior to presenting the information and prepare effectively. Through conversation with a few teachers, this type of workshop seemed to be most beneficial to these teachers. While this workshop had the potential to be more influential and informative, technology and time impacted the outcome. The time allotted was cut short due to various outside reasons. This did not give me sufficient time to cover all the data as desired. However, the workshop went as well as possible during the short amount of time. In addition, technology did not cooperate throughout this workshop. The filtering system was supposed to be removed for some websites I was using; however, the filtering system blocked a few major websites that would have been beneficial to present. Therefore, detailed explanations were provided and teachers were encouraged to investigate. In addition, they were provided with the link to the online module as well. I encouraged them to reference the tutorials for further explanation and demonstration. The pre-assessment and post-assessments were compared and contrasted and provided interesting results. The pre and post assessments were given using Google Surveys; however, the teachers were struggling a while with getting Google to work at their school, due to the filtering system. The pre-assessment results indicated that they were not familiar with Web 2.0 tools, the term Notebook, SMART Exchange, hyperlinks/sounds/pictures within the SMART Board Notebook. The post-assessment combined an assessment of the content as well as a self and workshop evaluation. The post-assessment indicated that, while they came to the workshop somewhat unfamiliar with these topics, they left the workshop with some newly gained knowledge and inspiration. (Appendix A) The teachers mentioned that they would have liked to cover troubleshooting the SMART Board and would have benefited from a longer session; however, their schedule did not accommodate this. Teachers were able to receive a copy of the presentation slides within the created SMART Board notebook so he/she may have a copy of the Web 2.0 tools
discussed and the instructions in written form to add hyperlinks, sounds, pictures. Materials provided teachers also included a link to the online professional development workshop. This provided teachers the opportunity to further research and review the information presented in this workshop. The teachers were appreciative of this option, and were excited to review the page. Overall, the teachers also gained new knowledge from the workshop, defined Web 2.0 tools, listed ways to use Web 2.0 tools, and named some Web 2.0 tools. The post-assessment also indicated that they are more knowledgeable as to how to add hyperlinks to a created Notebook. In addition, they plan to utilize some of the information gained in their classrooms. Overall, this was a successful first professional development workshop personally guided. While there are several areas of improvement, this experience provided evidence of strengths and weaknesses within the presentation as well as things to consider for any future professional developments. The best experience from this workshop was providing knowledge to teachers and them expressing their appreciation. Reflection There are several areas of improvement for any future professional development workshop. I will not attempt to cover so many concepts in such a short amount of time or make sure plenty of time is provided. In addition, I will triple check if the technology is working appropriately and if the links work multiple times prior to the session. Although, these were reviewed prior, the technology was no cooperative during the presentation. In addition, the websites worked on a different computer but would not function on the computer connected to the SMART Board. Sometimes these are things that cannot be prevented, but I plan to have a better plan B next time. In addition, I hope to have a better response to the pre-assessments online prior to attending the workshop. I will strive to collect more data prior to the workshop, in the future. Due to the website not functioning at the school, many teachers had to complete it prior to the workshop. Despite the technical issues and filtering system, it was a successful seminar (according to the data and feedback). I am thankful for the opportunity to present and research. There were areas of the presentation that went well, and I would complete again. For example, I would do Google surveys again for pre and post assessments, if possible. I would also encourage teachers to follow along as I instruct them using their own computers, providing time for that. I feel as if introducing myself with a Voki is engaging (however, it did not work in this workshop due to the filtering system) as well. Overall, I feel as if I maintained a positive attitude
throughout the presentation even though technology was not cooperating we still enjoyed the workshop together.
