Demand for specialized hydroexcavation services propels T-Rex past its competition By Doug Day
of the hydroexcavation process. While his father ran the Longhorn Racing Indy car team, the family is from Midland, Texas, and has ties to the oil industry. He had never seen hydroexcavation before, says Lassberg. He always wanted to start a business and when he retired from NASCAR in 2000, hydroexcavation was still rolling around in his head.

Eight years ago, T-Rex Services had 20 employees. At the beginning of 2013 that number had swelled to 105 and theyre now around 140. The largest hydro and vacuum excavation company in Texas, the T-Rex eet of trucks has grown from just a dozen three years ago to 40 today, with more units on the way.

We are a hydroexcavation company, says Marketing Director Karl Lassberg. The majority of our work is related to the oil and gas industry in some way. Hydroexcavation is being more widely accepted and recognized as an integral part of any major construction project, adds President Brad Davis. There are opportunities that didnt exist even ve years ago and we think the market will keep growing. RACING SPONSOR LIGHTS THE FIRE The T-Rex concept began many years ago when a Canadian rm approached NASCAR driver Bobby Hillin Jr. about sponsoring his car and sent him a video

Weve seen a move from digging with backhoes to a lot of companies requiring hydroexcavation as a safety precaution on the front end, especially since 2009. Owners and engineers understand the safety importance and cost-added value and specify hydroexcavation in the budget.
Karl Lassberg While it has been popular in Canada since the 1960s, it was just starting to spread south and was not common in the Gulf region, according to Lassberg. He literally picked up the phone and started calling people and had to do a lot of client education. People hadnt heard of the process. Early on, T-Rex had a diverse mix of customers including commercial construction, water utilities and others that needed nondestructive utility locating. It was timed well with the ber-optic work as people realized the

cost of striking and repairing them, notes Lassberg. We caught that market at a good time. That helped fuel the early growth, and over the years the demand in the oil and gas industry grew to the point that it now makes up the majority of the companys client base. The lions share of our work is oil and gas, mainly pipelines but also in the production eld and into the rening business, says Lassberg. Ive found myself not having to explain hydroexcavation as much. Everyone seems to be aware of the technology at this point. company favorably. Its been a surprise; it came on really strong very quickly. Especially in south Texas, weve seen a huge inux of work across every level. Along with pipelines, Lassberg says, The reneries are growing to process more incoming liquid natural gas and the storage facilities are building more tanks. Vacuum excavation has also increased in popularity for cathodic protection to control pipeline corrosion, so the company has developed some tools to install that equipment from the surface to reduce excavation needs and keep people out of danger. We can dig down using vacuum excavation to locate a pipeline nondestructively, use the tools to install the CAD weld and backll the area. We can have a smaller crew and dont need one piece of equipment carrying a backhoe and another with shoring equipment. You also arent putting anyone into a conned space, Lassberg notes. Some of the cathodic protection work has involved pipelines as much as 16 feet deep. You can imagine the size of hole you would need and the shoring that would be required to put a person that deep. It might take a day or two with vacuum excavation, but its extremely cost-effective with a much smaller environmental footprint compared to a huge open dig. Lassberg has also noticed a change in the clients who are hiring T-Rex. The company used to mainly work at the direction of industrial and commercial contractors, but now hydroexcavation is often part of the original project specs. The big oil companies are starting to contact us directly, he notes. We have to navigate each company differently. Its always interesting as to who is

GROWTH DRIVES PEOPLE ISSUES

T-Rex Marketing Director Karl Lassberg recalls the days when company safety meetings were held in his office. Over the next eight years, the staff outgrew his office as the company swelled from a staff of 20 to around 140. One of the areas that weve really had to watch is safety, he says. Having so many trucks on the road is a big liability and always a concern. Training and compliance go hand in hand with safety, especially as the customer base grows and diversifies and T-Rex has to comply with customers guidelines and standards. President Brad Davis says hiring can even present challenges. Hiring and recruiting is a big issue, finding qualified people who want to be part of our industry. The skills needed for the hydroexcavation industry are similar to those required in any of the industrial, commercial and utility construction fields. Davis says people with construction experience usually do well on the hydroexcavation trucks because they are used to that kind of work environment. If theyve worked in operations management, its the same skill set as operating any fast-paced business that has a lot of moving pieces, adds Davis. We have customers calling us at 8 a.m. with an emergency job asking if we can be there at 10. We have trucks and people moving around all over the state. We have jobs that last five hours and those that last four or five months. Davis says T-Rex has found success in hiring people from out of state. Theyve had a tough time in the construction or related industries getting a lot of work year-round. The weather in Texas allows us to work a lot of days. Weve hired people from the Midwest, the Rocky Mountain Region and to a lesser extent the Southeast. People who relocate for a job, we find, have a higher degree of stability and stay with you so you have less turnover. Thats been exciting for us.

He expects 2014 to be the year that T-Rex either opens a new ofce in East Texas or another state, such as Oklahoma or Karl Lassberg New Mexico, or expands its footprint by acquiring another company. T-Rex operates a large fleet of nearly 40 hydroexcavation trucks out of five locations.

More than once, he says, T-Rex has more info been called in to clean up a mess left by GapVax, Inc. someone who thought they could do the 888/442-7829 www.gapvax.com job with a jetter and a vacuum. The idea (See ad page 3) is to use less water and more vacuum so you dont make a mess. Thats the kind of thing we see in an industry that is growing quickly. Theres a lot to be said for experience, training and knowing how to dig through different soil types in different environments. We serve different markets that may require something special, but we have a good template, 12 years of experience and we have a pretty good idea of what works and what doesnt. We dont stray far from what we know.

I remember sitting with Bobby and hearing him say, If we can just get up to six trucks a day! It seemed so far away at the time. Its been fascinating to sit here and watch the company grow.
Karl Lassberg

Lassberg recalls his early days at T-Rex eight years ago when he would answer the phone, set up jobs and order supplies. We did some of everything back then. I remember sitting with Bobby and hearing him say, If we can just get up to six trucks a day! It seemed so far away at the time. Its been fascinating to sit here and watch the company grow. Today, about 36 T-Rex trucks are on the road on any given day, with most of the eet coming from GapVax. Were hiring operations management, sales and people to work on the trucks, adds Kaplan. Were pulling people off trucks into supervisory positions. Were investing in our technology in a pretty big way. So we have a lot going on here. GOMC

Heavy-duty cranes give companys productivity and prots a lift

oving mammoth sections of drilling rigs from one location to another in the Bakken shale region is the bread-and-butter of M & K Rig Service Inc. To get these large components where they need to go as quickly and safely as possible and with minimal downtime the Williston, N.D.-based company relies primarily on two heavy-duty, all-terrain cranes made by Grove, a brand owned by Manitowoc Co. Inc.

Moving rigs is not easy on equipment. Grove is proven equipment theyve been building cranes a long time. Theyre good, solid machines that stand the test of time.
Troy Bakken

One crane is a GMK5135, with a maximum lift capacity of 135 tons and a ve-section hydraulic boom that extends from 42 to 167 feet. The other is a slightly bigger GMK5165 with a maximum lift capacity of 165 tons and a sixsection hydraulic boom that extends from 42 to 197 feet. Both units feature an 88,400-pound counterweight, a 523 hp Mercedes turbo-charged diesel engine and a Daimler Chrysler 16-speed transmission. Everything on a drilling rig is really heavy, says Troy Bakken, the manager at M & K, a one-year-old company thats a division of M & K Hot Shot and
20 GOMC www.gomcmag.com - NOVEMBER 2013

Trucking Inc. The mud pumps alone can weigh 130,000 pounds each and a rig section can weigh in excess of 100,000 pounds. Theyve made the pumps so big and heavy because theyre drilling 20,000-foot-deep wells, so we need larger and larger cranes to do the job. With almost 20 years of experience in operating cranes, Bakken should know. He says that when he rst started moving rigs in 1994, a typical rig lift required 50- and 75-ton cranes. Now a 50-ton crane is basically obsolete, he notes. M & K Rig typically works within a 100-mile radius around Williston, but occasionally does jobs in other parts of North Dakota as well as eastern Montana. But no matter where crews work, one or both Groves are critical to the companys operations. Aside from their productivity, Bakken lauds the cranes durability. I was born and bred on Groves, he says. In my experience, theyre always up to the challenges of what we do. Moving rigs is not easy on equipment. Grove is proven equipment theyve been building cranes a long time. Theyre good, solid machines that stand the test of time. If youre charging $500 or $600 an hour for the crane, downtime for four or ve days costs you a signicant amount of money, he adds. Plus you have to rent another one to ll in.

<< The Grove GMK165, with a maximum lift capacity of 165 tons, does M & K Rig Services heaviest work in the oilfields. >> The Grove GMK165 (left) and GMK 135 with a 135-ton lift capacity both feature 523 hp Mercedes turbo-charged diesel engines.

At $1.5 million apiece, the cranes are, as Bakken puts it, spendy. But because theyre so durable and productive, they eventually pay for themselves. Doing some quick mental math, Bakken says that if a crane works a typical 12- to 14-hour day, they generate anywhere from $6,000 to $8,400 a day. In a year, one crane can probably generate enough revenue to more than cover the initial investment cost. Now thats gross revenue but theres denitely a return on the investment, as long as you keep it busy, Bakken says. The cranes also improve job site safety. Back in the day, we rode a lot closer to the edge of our charts with smaller machines, Bakken explains. Bigger machines keep you more within your charts keeps you within your variables, like soft ground conditions in the spring. If you have a 100-ton crane, but its maxed out because youre sinking in the mud, youre better off with a 165-ton crane, which keeps you away from the edge of your capacity. Theres just more machine to do the job. Moreover, the cranes also save the company money by providing plenty of lifting power, but doing so at a gross vehicle weight that minimizes frost-law, ton-mile fees. The two cranes weigh in at about 127,000 pounds each. From about mid-March to mid-May, contractors have to pay a fee for every ton that exceeds various weight limits, plus a per-mile fee, too. In other words, as Bakken explains, The more you weigh, the more you pay. For example, vehicles that weigh more than 130,000 pounds have to pay $5 per ton, per mile traveled. If you get over 130,000 pounds, you start racking em up pretty quick, he says of the ton-mile fees. If we have 15 or 20 truckloads of rig pieces to move we might pay $40,000 or $50,000 in ton-mile fees. The cranes sleek, modern appearance also pays dividends that are difcult to quantify, but are nonetheless apparent. When drilling companies see a contractor arrive with newer, nice-looking equipment, it reassures them in regards to on-the-job safety and minimal downtime, Bakken says. Get the PTS app! Available at The oil companies dont like it if you roll in with both Apple and a bunch of garbage, he notes. Thats not how we roll. Android stores. Safety and minimal downtime are absolutely critical. As hard as you work these cranes, some downtime is a given. But having newer equipment minimizes it. Without these cranes, were not moving rigs, Bakken says, noting their importance to the company. Theyre usually the rst piece to get started on a location and the last piece to leave. We need them to keep our business going. GOMC

For drill pipe cleaning, water jet systems beat your usual method

You can get drill pipe back into service sooner and keep it working longer when you clean it with NLB high-pressure water jets. Our water jets (up to 40,000 psi) remove scale and hardened mud more thoroughly than rattle-and-brush systems, making it easier to pass inspections. Water jets also ush out debris and drilling uids without a separate rinse operation. That means fewer plugged drill heads, less corrosion, and more work done between cleanings. For drill pipe that easily passes inspections and goes longer between cleanings, you cant beat water jets. To learn more about NLB cleaning systems, or ask about converting your existing system, call 1-877-NLB-7988 today.

Building the Business

MARKETING IS JOB ONE

The highest quality standards and best tools wont be enough if you cant sell, sell, sell
By David Frey

couple of weeks ago I was visiting with a marketing executive friend of mine. I was excitedly telling him all about the new marketing course I just developed and how awesome it was. He patiently sat and listened to me. He could see that I was really enthused about what I created. After I nished my boasting and gloating, he got up to leave and said, Thats great David, now the real trick will be getting people to buy it. My rst reaction was, What do you mean? Of course people are going to buy it. Its the best work Ive done to date. But I soon realized that I had fallen into an age-old small-business mistake: forgetting the principal objective of my business. My marketing friend subtly reminded me that my principal occupation is not marketing consulting; its the marketing of consulting services. SELL THE SOAP An old advertising adage goes, Any fool can make soap. It takes a clever man to sell it. This is as true today as when it was rst uttered many years ago. Anyone can make a bar of soap. But even if its the most advanced soap on the planet, it wont matter if no one buys it. Its the same with my marketing courses and your oileld services business. And failing to understand or accept this principle is so poisonous that it can kill any small business fast. You see, to make a small business successful, you need cash ow. To get cash ow, you need customers. To get customers you must sell your product or service. You might be a wizard with a hydroexcavator, but so are many of your
24 GOMC www.gomcmag.com - NOVEMBER 2013

competitors. No matter how great your technical skills are, your business will wither away and die like 80 percent of all small businesses if you cant sell it. Lets suppose you agreed today that your most important function is marketing your products and services. What would you do differently tomorrow morning? Would the contents of your daily to-do list change? Would you allocate and prioritize your time differently? Would you consider changing your role in the

me to prioritize my activities. I suggest you make a habit of asking yourself that same question every day. Here are a few activities you should consider: Create something unique in your product or service. Attend direct response marketing conferences or workshops. Find low-cost targeted advertising opportunities. Study the marketing strategies of your competitors and other businesses outside of your industry. Network with other owners of businesses that target your market. Test your advertising and marketing to improve your current response rates. Write expert articles for trade journals, local newspapers and magazines. Write sales letters and manage your direct-mail marketing campaigns. In a bigger company, a director of marketing would perform those activities. In a small business, you must become the director of marketing. That should be

You might be a wizard with a hydroexcavator, but so are many of your competitors. No matter how great your technical skills are, your business will wither away and die like 80 percent of all small businesses if you cant sell it.
organization? Would you change the criteria for hiring new employees? Would your personal training agenda and employee training change? If you really believe deep down your primary business objective is to market your products and services, your to-do list, the way you allocate your time, your role in your company, the hiring process and your personal and employee training would be radically different than it is today. YOUR TO-DO LIST In my prior life as a corporate consultant I was sensitive to how much my company billed clients for my time. I often asked myself, Am I adding value equal to the price my client is paying? It helped your new role in your business. Why leave the most critical part of your business to someone else? I can hear you saying, But Im already doing all those things. And my response is, How much time are you devoting to those high value activities? Do you need to hire a manager or assistant to relieve you of other duties so you can focus exclusively on the activities that have the most impact on your business? Author and speaker Brian Tracey has said: To be really successful, you should stop doing any activity that wouldnt normally pay you what youre worth. For example, if you think youre worth $50 an hour, why would you be ling papers when someone else can do it for $8 an hour?

CRACK A BOOK If you only had $1,000 to market your services or products, you should spend it on your personal education. As I have interviewed many successful business people over the years, I have found one common trait. Each person had an insatiable desire to learn and invest heavily in their own private education. As an example, did you know that every year Microsoft founder and billionaire Bill Gates goes away for a week with a suitcase of books to read? If he can nd time to do it, so can you. Let me recommend a few business-building books to consider adding to your reading list: - Getting Everything You Can Out of All You Got by Jay Abraham - The Ultimate Marketing Plan by Dan S. Kennedy - An Entrepreneurs Guide to Commonsense Marketing, by H. Brad Antin and Alan J. Antin - Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind by Al Ries and Jack Trout - The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing by Al Ries and Jack Trout - Nobody to Somebody in 63 Days or Less The Ultimate Guide to Business Networking and Word of Mouth Advertising by Joseph C. Ilvento and Arnold Sanow - How to Market a Product for Under $500! by Jeffrey Dobkin A FINAL WORD One of the worst mistakes you can make as a small business owner is to be fooled into thinking that you are in the business of producing and delivering products and services. Wrong! Youre in the business of marketing products and services. The faster you realize this, the faster the cash will ow. GOMC

Pumper & Cleaner Expo promises four fabulous and value-packed days in the Hoosier State

ee the best new equipment. Take advantage of quality educational opportunities. Enjoy networking opportunities with your peers. Those three key components keep thousands coming back to the Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International every year. The Expo will return to the Indiana Convention Center Feb. 24-27, 2014, again showing off the latest products and technologies in the environmental services industry, as well as providing educational seminars and roundtable discussions taught and moderated by skilled industry professionals. The Expo is the one place the industry gathers where you can see the best It really is an opportunity to equipment available from the meet the people behind these best manufacturers, specic educational opportunities products. When youre talking and the chance to meet and about a hydroexcavating truck network with others in the eld from all over the world, that costs a quarter of a million says Bob Kendall, cofounder of dollars, thats a big deal. COLE Publishing and president of COLE Inc. Those ideas have Bob Kendall always been the backbone of the Expo. Education opportunities are the focus of Day 1 of the 2014 Expo, and will feature presenters from the industrys top manufacturers and associations. New to this years Education Day is a business-marketing seminar from Suzan Chin of Creative Raven Marketing, as well as a technical session from National Tank Truck Carriers John Conley, who will focus on preventing tank

truck rollovers. There are educational opportunities for everyone, though, as sponsoring associations are offering over 50 sessions on Education Day. Trade organizations taking part include the National Association of Wastewater Technicians (NAWT), National Environmental Health Association (NEHA), Southern Section Collection Systems Committee (SSCSC), National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO), National Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association (NOWRA), Waterjet Technology Association/Industrial & Municipal Cleaning Association (WJTA-IMCA), Portable Sanitation Association International (PSAI) and the National Precast Concrete Association (NPCA). Learning opportunities are available throughout the week, with educational seminars from Expo exhibitors also slated for Tuesday and Wednesday, and the Roundtable Discussions set for the Expos nal morning. Not only can attendees gain valuable industry-specic knowledge, Expo education courses also count toward continuing education credits in many states. Visit the Expo website (www.pumpershow.com) for specic information on your state. While the educational opportunities are immensely valuable and popular, its the more than 550,000 square feet of tools, trucks and technology on display that leaves an indelible mark on most attendees. Every year, products introduced at the Expo become tried and true components of many industry professionals toolboxes and equipment eets. Outdoor demos will also be back for 2014. A new concept at the 2013 Expo, demos featuring hydroexcavation, industrial vacuum trucks and CIPP lining were well-attended despite inclement weather, giving attendees yet another opportunity to learn about the newest innovations in the industry. It really is an opportunity to meet the people behind these products, says Kendall. When youre talking about a hydroexcavating truck that costs a quarter of a million dollars, thats a big deal.

Patented Technology For Pumping

More than 8,418 people representing 3,730 companies attended the 2013 Expo, with 520 exhibitors nearly spilling out of the Expo hall. Expo organizers are optimistic that the 2014 Expo will be even bigger and better. Were aiming for even more exhibitors in 2014, says Julie Gensler, COLE Inc. trade show coordinator. The interest is there. People in the industry know this is the place to be. The list of exhibitors is continually updated on the Expo website, which you can also use to preview the educational sessions, study the interactive oor plan, plan your itinerary and search for hotel rooms. Several hotels boasting more than 4,900 guest rooms are directly connected to the Convention Center. Rooms are booking fast, though, so its best not to wait. Indy has the most connected downtown you can nd, says Kendall. Once you get there, you can stay inside, and everything you need is within a short walk. Its the perfect location for an industry convention. All you have to do is get there. While many attendees will spend their time roaming the Expo hall, attending education sessions and networking, Indy is also extremely family friendly, with several museums, entertainment venues and shopping opportunities, along with hundreds of restaurants within a short walking distance of the Convention Center. In fact, the number of industry professionals who base their annual family vacation around the Expo continues to grow each year. Of course, no Expo week is complete without the annual Industry Appreciation Party, moving to Wednesday evening for the rst time. In 2014, in addition to popular 25-cent tap beer, up-and-coming country music crooner Lee Brice will perform at the JW Marriott Hotel, connected to the Convention Center. The concert is free to all Expo attendees with full registration. Wednesday is always the heaviest attended day of the Expo, says Kendall. Moving the Industry Appreciation Party to Wednesday made sense. It will give more attendees the chance to attend and let loose a little. The 2014 Expo is shaping up to be another great four days. More surprises are in store, so hop onto the website and check out the constantly evolving schedule of events. Whether your goal is to check out the new innovations in the industry, educate yourself, meet your contemporaries or all of the above, youll be glad you visited the 2014 Expo. GOMC

Yellow-tipped hydroexcavation nozzle gives Expo visitors a look at latest technology
By Ed Wodalski

his years Pumper & Cleaner Environmental Expo International was a learning experience as well as a sales opportunity for StoneAge, which introduced visitors to its new line of hydroexcavation jetting heads. We have big visions for our hydroexcavation tools, says Frank Ligori, dealer manager for StoneAge. We researched and did our homework on our single- and triple-head nozzles and are introducing them today at the show. So far the response has been very positive. The Hydro-X head is available in three models (HX-101, HX-103S, HX200) for precise and accurate soil removal. Each tool delivers up to 5,000 psi, 12 gpm ows and is jetted to match pump pressure and ow.

Frank Ligori, right, dealer manager for StoneAge, explains the performance and safety features of the new Hydro-X jetting head.

We also have carbide tungsten tips inside with flow straighteners for a straighter, longer stream basically a harder-hitting stream. Yet, while doing all that, we kept the nozzle at a reasonable weight so your arms and shoulders dont get as tired.
Frank Ligori

They have polished throats to get the water stream to compress better, he says. We also have carbide tungsten tips inside with ow straighteners for a straighter, longer stream basically a harder-hitting stream. Yet, while doing all that, we kept the nozzle at a reasonable weight so your arms and shoulders dont get as tired. Ligori says the show visitors he spoke with use hydroexcavation primarily for digging deep wells, potholing and for cutting shallow and deep trenches. There are different types of hydroexcavation, everything from rotation

to xed, from angles to straights and different degrees. There are many applications, he says. Designed to direct pump power in one direction for maximum digging, both the HX-101 single-head and HX-200 Hydro-X lance assembly have a replaceable single OCIH 1/4 NPT carbide nozzle at 0 degrees. The HX-103S triple straight head assembly utilizes three AP2 Attack Tips (1/8-inch NPT). The heads online pattern enables operators to jet with a wider spray pattern for faster trenching. All tools have a 1/2-inch NPT inlet connection for attachment to the operating wand. One eye-catching feature of the hydroexcavation nozzle is its yellow urethane head, which helps guard against damage to buried cables and lines, as well as providing added operator safety. The yellow head is an indicator to see the end of the lance when youre [hydroexcavating] 10 or 15 feet down, Ligori says. Yellow is the color we picked just because of easy visibility. The head is replaced by removing three bolts. In talking to what he described as serious buyers, Ligori says he stayed busy at the show. Its tough for us to gauge because we depend on sales through our dealers, but the people who attended the show were engaged. 866/795-1586; www.stoneagetools.com. GOMC

Case Study

Cleaning, Jetting, Waterblasting and Maintenance

By Craig Mandli DEGREASER EFFECTIVELY CLEANS BAKED-ON CONCRETE TANK OIL
An oil company in the Lake Charles area of Louisiana had oil-fouled concrete that needed to be cleaned on its 11,000-square-foot concrete rewall containment area around a tank battery. State regulators had been requesting the clean up for some time.

Problem

E&B Green Solutions provided G-Clean heavy-duty degreaser to the company, whose cleaning crew used it to clean a portion of the concrete. The oil layer was about 1/8- to 3/16-inch thick and was baked on. The one-step use of a 2,500 psi pressure washer with diluted product was successful. The temperature on the pressure washer thermostat was set at approximately 170 degrees F, and the crew used a 25-degree fan tip.

Solution

The degreaser brought oil up from the cracks within a day, and the cleaning crew nished the rest of the clean up effectively over the next day. The workers cited improved safety as the degreaser immediately eliminated the slippery surface. 855/484-6091; www.ebgreensolutions.com. GOMC

On the Money

PAYING IT FORWARD
Following a strategy for saving will make your next big equipment purchase much easier
By Erik Gunn

H
Erik Gunn

ow did you pay for the last big piece of equipment you bought? And how would you want to pay for the next one? You may think that for big-ticket items a new truck or some other piece of machinery, say its inevitable that youll have to get nancing. And its true there is an advantage for many businesses to stretch payments over time. But thats not the only way to go. When it comes to acquiring major pieces of new equipment, you have three alternatives. Financing is, of course, one of them: After a down payment, you take out a loan for the balance of the cost of your purchase and pay it out over time, with interest, typically with monthly payments. Another is leasing: You may have a large up-front payment depending on the terms of your specic deal. In either case, you then have monthly payments, as with a loan. The difference is that after a xed amount of time you can walk away from the transaction or buy the product at a price usually set in advance. But some business owners opt for a third way: cash. You do that for small purchases all the time. And with careful planning you can even use it for high-priced items. BALANCING YOUR INTERESTS Which alternative will serve you and your business best can depend on a lot of factors not just the obvious ones. If the equipment is expensive and your need is genuinely urgent, nancing may be your only option. Even the most protable small business is unlikely to be able to just peel off tens of thousands of dollars or more on the spur of the moment to replace a

machine that broke down unexpectedly. And if you have another reason to want to hang on to cash to cover expenses and payroll during a predictable, upcoming seasonal slump, for instance you have another incentive to borrow for a major purchase. Leasing offers some of the same benets as borrowing, but it also has a downside. While a lease often has a lower up-front cost, its likely to be more expensive overall than a simple loan, especially if you want to keep the product when the lease expires. Leasing has some other distinct advantages, though. The main one is that it can help you guard against obsolescence. If the product you need is expensive

leased product that you choose to buy at the end of the lease term just as people hoping to buy a house someday save for the down payment, even if they know theyll have to take out a mortgage. Households save for the future in other ways and more should, as personal nance experts will no doubt attest. But so do municipalities. Equipment replacement funds are common on the lineitem budgets of many units of government. They are sometimes required by law. In Wisconsin, the state Department of Natural Resources oversees local municipal sewer collection and treatment agencies and issues the permits required for operation. One condition of those permits is for the municipality to properly operate and maintain the facilities, including maintaining adequate funding. For municipalities that receive loans from the state Clean Water Fund Program to help cover the costs of treatment facilities, an equipment replacement fund or ERF is also a requirement. The DNR rule species that the fund is to be used only for expenses incurred for equipment related to the municipalitys wastewater treatment

One simple approach is, with every price you set for a service, simply build in a xed percentage to cover future maintenance and replacement of your assets. When you get paid, put that particular sum aside into your designated fund.
and is also one frequently upgraded thanks to rapid technological advances, you might think twice about owning it outright. By leasing, you could simply upgrade to the newest model every few years. CASH ON THE BARREL Some business owners, though, prefer to keep nance debt to a minimum. And the best way to do that is to pay cash when you buy something new. Even if you do nance or lease equipment, you still need to be saving for the down payment or other up-front costs, as well as the buyout cost in the case of a works or urban runoff treatment works including both the cost of the equipment as well as the costs of installing it. The rule further species how much the community must set aside based on the cost of the equipment that it covers. For communities with $1 million or less in the assets covered by the rule, the equipment replacement fund balance must be at least 50 percent of that value. As the amount increases, the required percentage falls; communities with more than $30 million in relevant assets must keep 5 percent of that value in their ERF. As you can easily see, that indicates those higher-priced items

48

GOMC

www.gomcmag.com - NOVEMBER 2013

are probably still going to be purchased through a loan, but the regulation is aimed at making sure the agency has enough for a down payment. MAKE IT A HABIT Private business owners arent governed by that sort of regulation, of course. But that doesnt keep you from abiding by its spirit. That takes planning and discipline, although theres no great mystery to it. Were simply talking about setting aside cash consistently, in a fund or account designated for that purpose, instead of spending all your prots or distributing it to the owners. You can do that any way that works for you. One simple approach is, with every price you set for a service, simply build in a xed percentage to cover future maintenance and replacement of your assets. When you get paid, put that particular sum aside into your designated fund. If you wanted, you could tie the size of that added factor directly to the kind of job and thus the nature of the equipment that you use, but thats a lot of work and isnt really necessary. Picking an appropriate at percentage for everything is going to be easier. Your tax advisor or accountant will be able to help you gure out just how much and also how to make sure that it gets properly accounted for so that its not treated as taxable prot when it hasnt been distributed. Just like a municipal sewer utility, your business depends on quality equipment to do the job efciently and deliver value to your customers. Making sure you can adequately maintain your equipment and replace it when the time comes ensures you live up to that standard. GOMC

Telescoping gangway provides safe railcar access
By Ed Wodalski
The SB-RT telescoping ramp gangway with extended reach access from GREEN Access & Fall Protection, part of Benko Products, is designed to protect operators working on top of tank trucks or railcars. The SB-RT features a 500-pound load capacity, spring balancing for safe ergonomic use and OSHA-compliant walking surfaces and handrails. The units can be equipped with safety cages to protect workers accessing various types of vehicles for loading and unloading operations. The SB-RT units are ideal for liquid railcars, says Doug Ingram, general manager for GREEN Access & Fall Protection. When you have varying size crash boxes and platform congurations, you need the ability to adjust gangway length to safely gain access to that work area. We want to make sure there are no gaps or trip hazards in the transition from the gangway to the rolling stock. The gangway has a slip-resistant, grip-strut, at ramp walking surface that telescopes out 22 inches for gap protection. The SB series gangway has a working range of 15 degrees above or below horizontal. Once the operator presses the locking foot pedal, the gangway and optional fall prevention safety cage can easily be lowered into the working area. A handle on the telescoping extension enables the operator to extend the walk surface and locks into position for safe access. Polyurethane wheels mounted in an aluminum channel provide ease of movement.

The gangways are fully assembled and tested, then shipped for bolt-up installation on site. The units are designed for long life and are eld repairable with most parts in stock. All styles of GREEN gangways are available in painted steel, galvanized aluminum, berglass or a combination of materials. Once installed, little maintenance is required. Options include various widths, side-track mounting to the platforms and pivot mounting. Standard widths for the telescoping ramp are 2, 3 and 4 feet. Custom sizes range from 2 to 14 feet. As far as the gangways, well customize and design them to t the application, if its required, Ingram says. Because when youre dealing with railcars and tank trucks, one thing is for sure, no two applications are the same. Other options include power operation-pneumatic, electric or hydraulic-welded stops and adjustable safety chains to make the units self-supporting. We also have a complete line of self-leveling stair gangways for applications with a higher variance in vehicle elevations, Ingram says. 440/934-2180; www.green-mfg.com.

Safety First

BUILD A BARRIER TO ACCIDENTS

Improving safety and performance is easy with a few simple tools everyone in your company can employ
By Doug Day

Peer checking Employees need to feel comfortable checking on each other, as well. If someone isnt wearing their hardhat or safety glasses, everyone should feel empowered to correct them. Stop when unsure If it doesnt feel right, stop. It is just as important to support workers who do this as it is to train them on it. Questioning attitude Why can be a powerful question, and its one weve been asking since we learned to talk. Situational awareness Maybe youve had trouble cleaning a system in the past; being aware of risks and potential problems goes a long way in preventing them from affecting the work. Clear communication Three-way communications, phonetic alphabet, repeat backs; these are methods of making sure we understand each other and know what is about to happen. No sense working on a system on Beacher Street when you were supposed to be at Beeker Street. Post-job critique How did it go? Did you encounter unexpected problems or conditions, or learn anything you can share with others? Maybe the job gave someone an idea for improving a process. Taking a few minutes to review the job can save hours later on. With a little training and practice, human performance and error reduction tools can help everyone work safer and smarter, reducing the chance of injury and preventing rework that can cost you money.
GOMC

ccidents most often involve what can be called a conuence of circumstances. Its also known as the domino theory, developed by W.H. Heinrich, a pioneer in the area of industrial safety. Heinrichs 1930s work has been updated by others, leading to such things as the multiple causation theory, MORT (Management Oversight and Risk Tree) and the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety accident causation model. The bottom line is that there are normally several causes when things go wrong. The more barriers you put up, the less likely something bad is going to happen. These human performance tools are designed to prevent accidents and errors that can impact safety or quality. These tools are stated in different ways by different industries, but here is one example. Training and qualications Are workers properly trained on equipment such as hydroexcavators and backhoes? They also need to be qualied for conned-space entry, fall protection, etc. You also need to train them on processes and procedures so everyone is doing work in the same way. Prejob brieng A good brieng (tailgate or tailboard) may last a few minutes or much longer depending on the complexity of a job. It should identify hazards, an OSHA requirement, but can also be used to ensure that the job gets done correctly the rst time.

Procedure compliance We all get hurried or distracted now and then. Checklists, even for mundane tasks, can help workers avoid missing steps that could lead to accidents or mistakes. They are especially needed in complicated duties, situations in which errors are likely, and when completing rarely performed tasks. Coaching Leaders need to model these behaviors, reinforce them and correct those who are not using them appropriately. Coaching can also be done between peers to help improve overall team performance. Operating experience Using examples of bad (or good) experiences serves as a learning tool. They dont necessarily have to come from your own company; you can use examples from other rms or even other industries to help illustrate proper behaviors. Having people tell their own stories can send a powerful message. Self-checking (STAR: Stop Think Act Review) We are our best rst line of defense. Instilling STAR as a discipline can help workers identify traps that could compromise safety or quality and help people stay focused on the job.
