Theres always a way to begin with

It is with great pride and enthusiasm we launch INDUS Times, the biannual Newsletter, highlighting the harmony between the East and the West. INDUS is a non-profit community organization that strives at bridging spatial distances with cultural unions by celebrating the best of both worlds-The United States of America and the Indian Subcontinent. INDUS has been an active group for the past 30 years and continues to be. It is a privilege to be a member and to proudly support the group by participating in various events it undertakes. In todays world, the importance of Cultural Diversity and acceptance cannot be stressed enough. At INDUS, our efforts are focused towards that goal - an attempt to help everyone have a better understanding of the other persons or groups culture. It helps us understand why people do what they do and what it means to them. There can be no better way to demonstrate this than being a part of INDUS cultural celebrations. INDUS has been instrumental and very successful over the years in fostering harmony and understanding by bringing the local Indian communities close to our American counterparts and actively involving them in their celebrations. INDUS recognizes and celebrates some important Indian holidays like Holi-the festival of colors, Diwali-the festival of lights and Independence Day of India. INDUS also represents Indian culture and grandeur with a well decorated booth at the World Beat Festival that is held every June at Salems River Front Park. All these years, INDUS has existed in the hearts and souls of people that have been a part of it for decades. That was possible due to the limited number of people that referred to themselves as proud members of this great organization. Excitingly, over the past few years, there has been a surge in membership requests and people expressing enthusiasm to be involved with the group. Needless to mention, this leap in membership calls for more structure and organization. So a committee was formed and board members were elected. It was decided by the board members that it would be ideal to start a Newsletter as a way to communicate about the events and other news of INDUS. This is our first attempt at that idea and I hope it is received with open hearts. Given the fairly new status of this Newsletter, any and all suggestions and comments for improvement will be greatly appreciated and will be followed upon to the extent of available resources. Volunteers and participants are encouraged to contact with their desire to participate in the events as well. Please direct your comments and suggestions to our website at salemindus.org. Truly, Sridevi Talluri Editorial Board

Presidents Address by Jaya Srinivasan

Dear INDUS Members and guests, Thank you for attending the INDUS Diwali Celebration 2013. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the founding members of INDUS, all the past INDUS Board members and volunteers for their continuous support. INDUS would not have been possible without their help and hard work. As I reflect on our accomplishments, I am pleased to see an organization that works with dedication towards our mission of promoting and strengthening Indo-US friendships through understanding of cultures. I believe if we aim at the moon, and miss, we will surely land among the stars. When I started as the President we all vowed to work towards the goal. Together we have come a long way. My sincere thanks to my team Raution Jaiswal, Pat McKelvie, Susan Hoskins, John Chopala, Joel McPheeters, Khyati Joshi, Dr. Preeti Prakash, Dikshant & Dipali Patel, Padma & Venkat Susarla, Dr. Misha Mohindra and Souvik Mandal. I would like to extend my special appreciation to our Vice President Raution Jaiswal, for all his energy and enthusiasm in supporting our vision. We also have huge support from our regular members and volunteers to make our events very successful. My gratitude goes to them as well. INDUS has accomplished much and some of our objectives have gained more visibility: We streamlined our enrollment process and have seen a 50% increase in our membership. We provided quality cultural programs during Diwali and Holi two of our most awaited events of the year. We witnessed more guests, members and business sponsorships to these yearly events adding to the popularity. We showcased Indian culture, educated, and created awareness about India through participation in the World Beat and other cultural events. We encouraged our younger generation to showcase their talents and use INDUS events as platform to perform We tremendously increased visibility and presence of INDUS as an organization in Salem and around. We built a website to provide transparency and attract new memberships by providing easy PayPal services. We created an engaging social media presence to communicate with our members and patrons. We partnered with local communities and organizations to promote common vision and mission. We continuously reached out to our members through surveys/polls for their feedback. We published INDUS Times, a biannual newsletter for INDUS members. Congratulations to all of us! We know that the greatest strength of INDUS lies within its members. For this reason, I would like to request your continued support and cooperation. Please spread the word about INDUS to your friends and family and encourage them to become members of this humble Organization. I also encourage all of you to become office bearers and Board Members of INDUS as your time permits. As a full-time employee and a mother of two energetic young children, I am aware I am asking a huge favor. But I believe it is the responsibility of each and every one of us at INDUS to do whatever we can to keep this organization going. Ladies & Gentlemen, in my final address as an outgoing President, I want to reiterate our vision and urge each and every one to embrace and work towards it. Once again, thank you all for your support, encouragement and friendship. It has been my pleasure to serve you!

INDUS Celebrates 100 Years of Indian Cinema at World Beat Festival by Mike Barnum
As in years past, INDUS was a participant in one of the Willamette Valleys most popular cultural events the Salem World Beat Festival, which has been held annually since 1998 at Salems Riverfront Park.

Each year INDUS volunteers man a booth decorated to celebrate the history and culture of India for visitors at the festival to view. This years theme was 100 Years of Indian Cinema. The INDUS booth was decorated with over two dozen replica and original Hindi film posters ranging f rom 1939s PUKAR to current fare such as OM SHANTI OM. There was also a colorful display of Bollywood style clothing to add a glamorous touch to the proceedings.
In addition to the items on display, a constant stream of vintage Indian films were shown at the booth along with henna painting by board member Khyati Joshi and dance instruction by member Sneha Raution. If that werent enough, a lovely and colorful troupe of INDUS members dazzled audiences with a lively Bollywood inspired dance number on the nearby stage. Many visitors to the INDUS booth did not realize that India had a film industry, and others marveled at the fact that the countrys output reached as far back as the days of silent film. It was a fun and educational event for everyone! If you missed out on this years World Beat Festival, there is always next year. World Beat 2014 is scheduled for June 28 th and June 29th. Hope to see you there! **************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

There is no denying that kids speak from their heart. Whether it is a reflection upon one of their favorite times of the year or a passionate plea for something they strongly feel about, it is done with utmost sincerity and honesty. It is our responsibility to listen to what they have to say and to encourage them. Here are some of the things they wanted to share:

Diwali is a Festival of Lights to celebrate the Indian New year. Diwali brings joy and light to the dark sky at night fall. When the sun goes down all the candles are lit. I enjoy Diwali because of the beautiful lights that glisten off the water's reflection. In my family we turn off all the lights and then we light lots of candles, when the candles are lit we set them on plates filled with water. My sister and I enjoy the color and brightness that warms our home. -Esha Puri

My name is Ryna and I am 6 years old. I like Diwali because I get to wear Indian suits and lehangas. The candles are very pretty and they glow in the dark. I love to dance, but I am a little bit shy so I wont be performing. I think Diwali is amazing! -Ryna Puri

Happy Diwali to all of you! On this great occasion, I would like to appeal to all of you for a great and favorite cause that is very important to me. I love animals, they are my best friends. Dogs and cats around the world face cruelty and neglect for many reasons. They should get enough food, water and basic veterinary care and most of all lot of love. Salem is blessed with Willamette Humane Society. Our family is a regular visitor to the Humane Society. There is lot of ways you can help. Please adopt a pet from the shelter. You can also donate or volunteer at the Humane Society. It is so much fun. I am planning to be a volunteer once I am old enough to be one. Happy Holiday season and keep your pets safe during this holiday season! -Neha Srinivasan
