PORTS IN INDIA
India has not been able to emerge as forerunner in International Trade despite : Strategic location in Indian Ocean Extensive Coast line of over 7000 Kms Strong maritime tradition Mineral rich hinterland Major ports are not efficient due to draft restrictions, low mechanization / technology orientation & labor unrest, resulting in inefficiencies like : Smaller parcel size Pre-berthing delays Conventional handling of cargo resulting in cargo loss High turn around times Up gradation, expansion & development of new ports is vital to handle growing cargo volumes and strengthen Indias position in world trade

CARGO HANDLING AT INDIAN PORTS : CONSTRAINTS

Limited dedicated cargo handling capacity Inadequate drafts resulting in smaller parcel sizes Some constraints limiting efficiency at ports Congestion at Ports Pre-berthing Pre berthing delays Conventional handling of cargo resulting in higher cargo losses Infrastructural constraints and operational inefficiencies at Indian Ports result in higher cost of handling, cargo loss, increased turnaround time and penal demurrage charges adding up to cost of imported / exported cargo
