ELECTRIC STEERING - Description

The Electrical Power Steering (EPS) system reduces the effort required to steer the car by using the torque produced by an electric motor. An electronic control unit manages and controls the system: by processing the incoming information and using a preset operating logic the control unit determines the direction of rotation and the supply current for the electric motor producing the desired power-assisted effect. The CITY button located on the tunnel can be used to alter the level of power-assistance for the electric steering. On the instrument panel, there is the electric power steering fault warning light; For more details . The control unit supply lines are protected by a special maxifuse located in the engine bay control unit. ignition-operated power supply from a special fuse in the engine compartment control unit.

ELECTRIC STEERING - Functional description

The power steering control unit M86 monitors and controls the entire electric driving system . The control unit is supplied directly by the battery via a line protected by fuse F2 of engine bay control unit B1, at pin 1of connector A of M86. The supply controlled by the ignition (15/54) reaches pin 1 of connector B of M86 from the line protected by fuse F24 of the engine compartment unit B1. The pin of connector A of M86 is earthed. Self-diagnostic data can be read by connecting the unit to connector G of Body Computer M1 - pin 11: this receives signals from pin 4 of connector A of M86. See E8010 DIAGNOSTIC MULTIPLE CONNECTOR Control unit M86 is connected to the CAN network - pins 5, 6, 7 and 8 of connector B with the other nodes, particularly Body Computer Node M1 and instrument panel E50, which receives DUALDRIVE fault warning light signla.s The CITY mode (less effort to turn the wheel) selection button is located in tunnel switch unit H35 and connected to control unit M86 via the CAN network throgh Body Computer M1, pin 19 of connector D.
