The price to sub scrib ers is Rs.25 but only a small edition is printed, Messrs. Thacker, Spink & Co. hold themse lves at liberty to raise the p rice upon publication to Rs. 30. Ne wland returned reports on the camp aign to an Indian ne wspap er and his photogra phs were to win him five bronze med als from the Photographic Society of London. He b ecame so e namoured of Chin hills and the ir people d uring this expe dition tha t he resig ned from the army in 1899 whilst stationed in Hakha, a nd ma rried Si Na, da ughte r of Sang Cin a nd Thla Cer the same year. His son was born the following yea r. He set up his home in consid erable sty le: An av id re ader and lover of music his lib rary in Ha ka contained the complete works of Dicke ns, the Bronts, Eliot, Scott, Thackeray and other classic a uthors, while a mong his record collection he numb ered the works of Be ethov en, Mendelssohn, Schubert, and a host of othe r composers. He also established a clinic in his home, hav ing b ought up spare medical supplie s from his regiment. He a lso exp erime nted with the g rowing of various English fruits and veg etables. He grew the giant corn (maize) from C alifornia and so successful wa s he and so palatable was it to the Chins, that to this day it is their sta ple food, be ing known as Newland Fawn-Voi in Chin, or Newland Corn. Newland had intend ed to send his only son, Sam, to St Pauls and in April 191 1 returned to England, but found the life uncongenial a nd so they returned to Hakha in Se ptemb er 1913. Seven years late r the y returned to Britain again, to Edinb urgh where Sam studied forestry. Ma jor Newland die d the re in 1925 from bowe l cancer. Sam went on to become one of the British Officer Johnnie s, men with local knowle dge of Burma ope rating behind Japane se lines d uring the Second World Wa r, and it is from Lie utena nt-Ge neral Sir Geoffrey Evanss account of their services, The Johnnies, that the above quotations are drawn.
