Jan Jeroen Bremer Kristen Foster College Comp 150.403 20th October 2013 In what ways are our lives affected by technology? An Annotated Bibliography In recent years, technology has more and more become part of not only my personal life but society as a whole. Technological advances in the fields of cell phones and computers have been amazing in the last 10 years. Yet, it has become a normality in peoples lives. I was sitting in my Computer Science 110 class (CS110) at the beginning of this semester and for the first time it became apparent to me that technology is a great influence on all of our lives. We were watching a video on YouTube called A Day of Glass and the advancement of touchscreens in addition to its availability in 2013 was mind blowing. In that moment I knew that I wanted to know, how much and to what extent technology influenced our lives. Thus it came at a perfect time that we had to start researching for our next two assignments in the College Composition class. The research was initially started on the 3rd of October where it started with a basic search for the videos I had seen in my CS110 class. Over the next week it continued to grow to searches in the library database and scholarly articles on the google search engine. And then I ended up looking at mainly scholarly articles. The four sources included in this Annotated bibliography are an Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) website on new technologies, and three scholarly articles. The fact that the majority are scholarly articles was important to me because it creates a more valid and credible argument.

Greenfield, Susan. "Modern Technology Is Changing the Way Our Brains Work, Says Neuroscientist." Mail Online. Daily mail, n.d. Web. 15 Oct. 2013.

This article is published in the Daily mail which is one of the biggest newspapers in the UK. The articles purpose is to show that the way in which we interact with todays technology is changing one of our most vital organs, the Brain. The intended audience for this piece is anyone who is interested in seeing how technology affects us. Susan Greenfield describes the ways in which technology reshapes the way in which humans interact with each other, what makes us happy and how are capacities and capabilities are ever changing. This is a reliable source to use in my paper for multiple reasons. First of all, Susan Greenfield is a British scientist, writer, broadcaster, and even a member of the House of Lords (1). These credentials add to her credibility because it shows that she is not only an expert in her topic but in addition has an impressive background and following. The source was also published in the Daily Mail one of Englands largest and most well-known newspapers. This is important because it means that by publishing this article they want to share information with people which is truthful and is logical because they dont want to lose their credibility as a legitimate newspaper. The article is only limited in the way that it is an excerpt from one of Greenfields books and thus not the whole picture can be seen. The information given in this article is a very useful one to start research with. The data is based on facts and research done by Greenfield. This article was a great start to my research as it answered me what is changing within our bodies more specifically our brain and how that impacts certain factors of our social lives especially in the ones of teenagers and young adults. In addition this article sparked my interest even more in wanting to know in specific areas how our interaction with each other changes.

Fozard, J.L. "Impacts of Technology Interventions on Health and Self-esteem."Gerontechnology 4.2 (2005): 63-76. Print. My research then led me to this second article published in the Journal Gerontechnology. This is articles purpose was to inform the reader of how technology influences the following: health and self-esteem; housing and daily living; mobility and transport; communication and governance; and work and leisure. (Fozard). This is a great source to use when answering how much we are influenced by technology. This is a very reliable article when trying to answer the question how we are influenced by technology. Fozard is a professor and expert in the field and has worked at multiple universities including Harvard Medical School and the University of South Florida. (2) In addition this article was published in a well-established journal which focuses on technology and its impacts. Unfortunately, the article was published in 2005 and therefore is not as recent as it could be, but it is still valid to see how technology in 2005 influenced people and how that today will be magnified due to the increase in use of electronics in the past eight years. The evidence included in the article comes from studies done by Fozard, which are scientific in nature and verified by the many universities he has worked at. The only limitation this source presents is the fact that it is a little bit outdated due to the fact that it has been published eight years ago. This source greatly contributed to my research. It was great to see so many aspects of culture and social lives being presented and how they had been influenced by technology. The stakeholders are very diverse in this article as they range from both genders and from young adults to middle aged people. This was especially useful as now I had information on how the human body had changed due to technology but now it is also shown how this directly impacts certain parts in our society. This great find in a source greatly encouraged me to find even more sources and continue my research. My next goal was to find a source that would show me positive and negative impacts of technology on society.

"10 Breakthrough Technologies of 2013." MIT Technology Review. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 14 Mar. 2013. Web. 16 Oct. 2013. This informational piece was published on the MIT website one of the most prestigious technical universities on earth. The articles purpose was to show the 10 greatest technological advances in 2013. The intended audience is young adults as these technologies will affect especially younger generations. The site shows the technologies and then gives a short explanation as to what they are and what they do this is a great way to see what kinds of technologies people are dealing with and looking at now-a-days and how it can affect both genders in many ways. This is a good source when answering my research question as it clearly highlights in what ways technology has advanced and what is possible. This is a reliable source to use in my writing because MIT is a well-known school that would not publish false information. In addition the information was published by the professors of the university who would not want to publish false information as it would heavily damage their reputation. The weakness in this article is the fact that the information is not fully explained and that additional research into each one of the technologies presented needed to be done. But, this source still greatly contributed to my research as it opened my eyes to the technology shown in this article, not aware that most of these technologies existed and to what extent they were already developed. This information was especially useful when examining the kinds of technologies young adults and children will be regarding as normal when they grow up. Also this article made me wonder to what extent technology is supposed to develop in the next few years in addition to what we can expect in the next few years. The information found in this article encouraged me to continue my research and find out more about how technology affects different aspects of our lives such as our morals and ethics and how they have changed.

Nordmann, Alfred. Converging Technologies: Shaping the Future of European Societies ; Report 2004. Luxembourg: Office for Official Publ. of the Europ. Communities, 2004. Print. This is a report published by the European Commission on Technology. In addition to the Head of the science and technology foresight unit. This article was written in order to create a report on growing technological influence on European communities. The intended audience was primary the European Union who commissioned this article. The articles main points are that converging technologies need to be explored and that the European Union needs to make use of them in their best interest in the fields of science and economics. In the end the commission came up with 16 recommendations these included new research agendas, visions and strategies, and lastly the ethics and social empowerments due to Converging Technologies. This article is very reliable because the author is an expert on technology and economics. Nordmann is a doctor professor at the University of Darmstadt in Germany. (3) In addition he is affiliated with the University of South Carolina. In addition this was commissioned by the European Union and therefore this report is highly accurate because the heads of state of all the European countries will be informed of the information displayed in the article. The only limitation is the fact that this report was published in 2004 therefore the information could potentially be outdated. This source answered many questions. One of these was to what extent were specific parts of society influenced by technology? Even though this is European specific, this research can be applied to many parts of the world including the USA and Asia. A question raised from from this source was that now the state of these technologies in the year 2013 became interesting. In addition my research would next lead me to research how technology had changed in just the last 5 years in order to further understand how we humans are influenced by technology. In addition because the stakeholders are so large in this source, it was a very valuable source to examine. Also finding this source prompted me to further examine other sources and continue my research into my topic.
