Polyurethane Systems

Polyurethane Systems
Introduction
Baxenden Chemicals is a world leader in polyurethane technology. It has become a recognised, well-respected name in the urethane chemicals market for over 40 years and is currently selling products to over 30 countries via a network of established agents and distributors. The Speciality Chemicals Division is involved in a number of product areas. Polyurethane system technology includes foams, thermal break systems and polyurethane dispensing equipment. The division also manufactures polyurethane prepolymers and crosslinkers, which are used extensively in coatings, adhesives, sealants, elastomers, inks and binders for many applications.

Rigid Foam Systems

Isofoam is a range of PU and PIR foam systems (either liquid or spray dispense), which are fully formulated polyurethanes for the production of insulation and moulded parts. They are easy to use through all types of dispensing equipment and exhibit good physical properties. Application temperatures are covered from a range of -160C to +140C. A full range of densities and reactivities are available and where required custom formulations for most applications can be developed. Several independent and recognised approvals are also available for specific uses. The Baxenden range of foam systems is zero ozone depleting and can be utilised in the following general areas:-

Thermal Insulation
Composite panels - both building and cold storage insulation Refrigeration Water heating and solar Pipeline and tank insulation Cavity insulation

Polyurethane Thermal Break Systems

The Castomer SU range is a series of two component polyurethane systems specifically designed for use as a thermal barrier in aluminium extrusions. Castomer SU reacts to produce a very strong insulating polymer, which is ideal for the insulation of commercial and residential applications.

Automotive S-RIM
S-RIM is a process of producing thin section, lightweight, reinforced mouldings where glass fibre is utilised to reinforce the moulding. The composite rigid foam produced has exceptional impact strength and stiffness. Moulded components can utilise UEV or ABS skins and have excellent dimensional stability. Low and high density systems are available with reactivities to suit both continuous filament glass mat and long fibre injection (LFI) processes.

Hardcote Elastomer Systems

Hardcote elastomer systems are fully formulated polyurethane elastomer systems for the production of sprayed, poured or rotary-cast parts. The two component Hardcote systems can be formulated to cover a range of product groups in the GRP replacement market, including leisure, domestic and industrial. Hardcote can be utilised on its own or in conjunction with other materials to provide a hard impact resistant finish which also has a degree of flexibility. Hardcote is a fast-demould system designed to replace or reinforce GRP parts in markets including: water features, simulated rock and scenery, signage and advertising, automotive (industrial/agricultural), shower bases, baths, spa pools, doors and hot water heating.

Changes to both processing and formulation create a range of low cost, high production output parts that can be manufactured for a short return nominal capital investment. Simple low cost tooling is sufficient to produce high quality parts, which are in-mould or post painted to the required colour and resistant to UV light degradation. In addition to the standard range of products, continuing research and development ensures that Baxenden is at the forefront of systems technology, enabling customers to meet the latest legislative requirements, including low GWP (Global Warming Potential) products.

Polyurethane Dispensing Machinery

Isofoam is a specialist supplier of polyurethane processing equipment and ancillaries. Machinery is available for both liquid dispense and the spray application of polyurethane systems. Isofoam is the UK agent for the Graco/Gusmer and Saip equipment ranges, stocking a full range of spares. As the machinery division of Baxenden Chemicals Isofoam supplies a fully integrated turn-key package of equipment, polyurethane systems and technology. With 30 years experience in polyurethane processing technology the division ensures that the most appropriate solution is specified to meet the needs of a broad customer base. A dedicated team of experienced technical service engineers is available to ensure continuity of product and advice on processing parameters.

Flexible Foam Systems

Flexocel are fully formulated polyurethane systems for the production of moulded parts. The materials are all zero ozone depleting (zero ODP), two component systems that can be placed into four main product groups:-

Integral Skin Semi Rigid

The Flexocel IS series are Baxendens integral skin foam systems with densities in the range of 160 700Kgm-3. The systems utilise new blowing agent technology, which enables superb flow characteristics with a tough skin and an opened-cell core. Key features of the systems include zero ozone depleting, classified as non-flammable for use. They are fully formulated and available in a wide range of hardness and densities. Mouldings using integral skin are colourable using pigments or in-mould coating technology. The unique physical characteristics of integral skin coupled with its adhesive properties enable the material to be used in conjunction with materials such as metal and wood to produce a wide variety of components.

Semi Rigid
Excellent energy adsorption properties are typical of the Flexocel SR series of water blown products. Ideal for automotive trim and safety devices when used behind PVC or ABS skins.

Flexible Cold Cure

The Flexocel F series is a range of water blown high-resilience flexible systems. The main uses are automotive seating, sound insulation and saddlery components.

RIM Mouldings
Flexocel RIM is a range of microcellular solid materials, which are suitable for moulded articles with a wall thickness of between 4 6mm. Items can be produced with high strength and inherent stiffness coupled with rapid demould times.

In addition to Baxendens standard products continuing research and development ensures the company is at the forefront of systems technology, utilising a wide range of blowing agents to the latest legislative requirements.

As part of the development programme Baxenden undertakes fully blended system design to suit individual customer requirements.
