Efficient ULDs - Making cheaper Air Freight a Reality (Written By Hari) Imagine the impact that cheaper and more efficient shipping of cargo would have on millions of businesses and consumers around the world. Apart from the tremendous economic benefits it offers, this will also result cleaner world with lesser emissions. $6.4 trillion worth of cargo goods travel by air every year thats 35% of all world trade by value. Air freight rates are on the rise due to increasing fuel prices which in turn have led to higher operating costs. According to ATA, every dollar increase per barrel drives an additional $415 million in annual fuel expenses for U.S. cargo airlines. Fuel expenses now range from 25 to 40 percent of the total airline operating costs. With around 1 million Unit Loading Devices (ULDs) - large containers packed with freight and loaded into aircraftsaround the world, carrying approximately 80 million tonnes of cargo annually, they are a crucial element of the global aviation cargo industry. Akheras patented efficient ULD packing technology provides it with a golden opportunity to revolutionize the cargo shipping industry. With the current manual loading of ULDs estimated to be only 70% efficient apart from being time consuming, Akheras technology will increase efficiency and improve safety and security with a significant reduction in loading time. A strategic alliance with George UTZ could be beneficial to both the companies as their fields of expertise complement each other. George UTZ is a leading manufacturer and supplier of ULDs for international cargo giants like FedEX, USP and Finnish Air among others. Recently UTZ has won substantial European Union grant funding for the research and development of a revolutionary ULD which is much lighter and better designed than existing ULDs. While UTZ focuses on the prototyping of the 2nd generation ULDs which will result in major improvements in safety and security of the air cargo supply chain, the Akhera engineering team could work with the UTZ design team to modify/redevelop its Patented Tilt and Pack System for the new ULDs. Together, UTZ and Akhera can provide a complete ULD solution that can result in significant savings for cargo airlines and cheaper and faster freight. Simply put Better ULDs (George UTZ) + More Efficient ULD Loading (Akhera Smart Tech) = Lower Fuel Costs + Faster Shipping (Lower weight and loading times). Opportunities Akhera and UTZ complement each others capabilities (ULD Packaging and ULD Manufacturing respectively) and an alliance will be ideal to leverage on the expertise of each player and engage in joint product development to provide a complete solution for cargo services. Furthermore UTZ is a much bigger and more established player and it provides Akhera with a gateway to penetrate the European market as large freight providers like FedEx, Finnish Air and DHL are amongst UTZ customers. Challenges On the flip side, Akheras limited customer base might be a barrier as airfreight carriers might be hesitant to shift to an untested packaging technology. This can be overcome by leveraging on the UTZ brand and the EU funding which will instill confidence in customers. Akhera , being a start-up company, is much smaller and could be pressured into going in the direction the larger partner UTZ wants to take . The partnership will work out only if the visions and goals of the two companies align with each other in the longer run.
