Dynamics of Structures; Lectures and Exercises

Kul-49.3400 (5 cr) 2013
General
This course familiarizes students with the theory and analysis of experimental data for vibrations of machines and structures. First the fundamental concepts of vibration are studied by evaluation of vibrations of one degree of freedom systems. Later the evaluation will be extended to cover vibrations of both multi degree of freedom and continuous systems.

Lectures
The course lectures will be held on Wednesdays at 10:15 am - 1 pm in lecture room K1 326 by senior university lecturer Kari Santaoja. The first lecture will be held on September 11 and the last lecture will be held on December 4 (or November 27). The content of the lectures will be updated in Noppa during the course.

Weekly homework assignments

There will be 10 rounds of weekly homework assignments. During the calculation hour the course assistant Niko Siilin and the part-time course assistant Joonas Kiviranta will help students to start to solve the problems of the weekly homework assignments. The calculation hour will be held on Fridays at 9:1511 am in the lecture room K1 201. On the Tuesdays following the calculation hour, the assistant Niko Siilin will present the correct answers to the problems during the exercises at 12:15-2 pm in lecture room K1 326. The correct solutions will be in Noppa after the exercises. The students have to solve the problems by themselves and they must drop their solutions into the green mailbox on the ground floor of building K3 (close to the office K3 330) before the exercises, i.e. on Tuesdays before 12:00 am or give them to the assistant before the exercise. Worksheets will be available in PDF-format in Noppa. The part-time assistant of the course will evaluate the solutions by the students and will give 0-6 points for every round of assignments. Students earned points will be posted on Noppa. The evaluated solutions will be available during the calculation hour. The first set of solved problems of the weekly homework assignments has to be dropped into the green mailbox not later than September 17 at noon or given to the assistant in the room K1 326.

Demonstration
Mr Kari Kantola will present a laboratory demonstration. Students have to do some preliminary calculations before entering into the demonstration and prepare a report after the demonstration. Reports will be given a rating from 1-6 points and will be added to the homework points as additional credit. Taking part in the demonstration and writing a report are obligatory. More detailed information will be given during the course.

Deviations from the normal time table

In the week starting on Monday October 21 there are no lectures, exercises or calculation hour.

Turn

Prerequisites
Good knowledge of dynamics, material mechanics, mechanics or structural mechanics. The course material covers all the information needed to pass the course. Therefore, some previous knowledge of the topics mentioned above is adequate for passing this course with excellent marks.

Registration and announcements

Registration is done via WebOodi. Students who cannot use WebOodi can send an email to Kari Santaoja. Announcements are made through Noppa. Please activate the RSS feed in Noppa by selecting News and by clicking the text Course news RSS feed.

Passing the course

This course will be passed by satisfactorily solving the weekly homework assignments and passing the final examination or two midterm examinations. Before entering the examination or midterm examinations, students have to obtain acceptance of their demonstration report, solve the obligatory weekly assignments by obtaining at least 40% of the maximum homework points altogether. This means the entrance to the first midterm examination requires 0.4x5x6 = 12 points (rounds 1 to 5) and the entrance to the second midterm examination requires 0.4x5x6 = 12 points (rounds 6 to 10). Entrance to the examination requires 40% of the maximum points of both rounds 1-5 and 6-10. The homework points beyond the minimum are reduced and added to the examination points so that the maximum points give 3 additional points for examination and 6 points for midterm examinations altogether. This is: 1 extra homework point gives 1 / 6 additional point for midterm exam. The demonstration report will earn additional points beyond homework points. The maximum result in the examinations is 24 points. The student has to pass the examination before additional points will be taken into account. Students who do not pass this course before autumn 2014 when this course will be next be offered, have to solve new homework and take part in a new demonstration. The allowed material in the examinations is: stationery, MAOL (mathematical tables) and the course formulae, which will be available in Noppa. The first midterm examination will be held on Saturday October 26 at 10 am - 2 pm and the second midterm examination will be held on Tuesday December 17 at 4-8 pm. The examination will be at the same time as the second midterm examination.

What to read for examination

Selected parts of the course book, solutions to the homework and what was presented the during lectures. More updated and detailed information will be given before the examination. The problems to be solved in the examination correspond to the concepts of those in the weekly homework.

Course material
D.J. Inman, Engineering Vibration, 3rd edition, Prentice-Hall, 2008. The lecture notes will be available in PDF format in Noppa.
