Fiber optics fundmentals:

The science of fiber optics deals with the transmission or guidance of light rays or wave guide modes in the optical region of the spectrum along transparent fibers of glass, plastic or a similar medium. The phenomenon responsible fpr the fiber or light pipe performance is the law of total internal reflection.Fiber optics are long, thin strands of very pure glass about the diameter of a human hair. They are arranged in bundles called optical cables and used to transmit light signals over long distances.

Fiber optics in uses: 1. Communication Systems 2. Cable Television 3. Imaging 4. Additional Uses
Communication Systems:

Networking and telecommunication are two areas where fibre-optic cables are ideal signal conductors. Light's ability to travel great distances through optical lines without weakening makes the systems well-matched for both long-distance and short-distance communication. Individual glass fibres can transmit independent light pulses on multiple wavelengths, which allows each strand to carry simultaneous streams of

data on various channels.

cable television:
Usage of fibre-optic cables in the cable-television industry began in 1924.

Not only is the Fibre optics was less expensive and capable of transmitting clearer signals farther away from the source signal, but its substantially reduced signal losses decrease the number of amplifiers required for each customer from an average of 35.

Fiber-optic cable allows cable providers to offer more customized service to separate neighborhoods because only one optical line is needed for every 500 or so households.

Imaging: In a medical setting, an endoscope is a diagnostic instrument that enables users to see through small holes in the body. In other environments, where the device is also called a borescope or fiberscope, it makes it easier to observe areas that are difficult to reach or see under normal circumstances.

Additional Uses: Computer and Internet technology has improved due to optical fibers' enhanced transmission of digital signals. fiber-optic signals stay strong longer, requiring less power over time to transmit signals than copper-wire systems. Military Fiber Optics:
Timbercon fiber optic products are used in a variety of military applications requiring rigorous testing and harsh environment certification to ensure reliability and performance in the field. The U.S. military uses fiber optic technology for a wide variety of air, sea, ground, and space applications. Timbercons fiber optic technology has already been implemented in the FiberSTAR project for Lockheed Martins LMSTAR avionics test equipment module. The LM-STAR is used in the ground support system for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). Timbercon utilizes high-reliability fiber optic connectors in its military fiber optics to produce precision alignment of optical fibers. Connectors with polarization keys and keyways are manufactured to exacting tolerances to reduce radial misalignment and insertion loss. Timbercon military specific MIL-DTL-38999 connectors also incorporate abottoming surface to ensure reliable shell-to-shell connection. Military fiber optic applications are highly specialized, often with very specific project and scope requirements. One of Timbercons specialties is the development

and manufacturing of application-specific products for harsh environments. Timbercon has the resources, expertise, and experience to design, develop, manufacture, install, and maintain the ideal fiber optic product for your application. Timbercon offers quick project turnaround times on virtually any military product. By establishing partnerships with key military component manufactures, we have drastically reduced lead times, allowing expedited sourcing, manufacturing, and delivery of your product.

APPLICATIONS OF OPTIC FIBER SENSORS: * military and law enforcement * partial discharge detection * medical fields for diagostics and surgical application * aircraft jet engines. * computer application
