Faith Community of

Mission San Luis Rey

Through a generous gift, the friars now have a copy of Bellinis beautiful 15th century painting St Francis in the Desert, to grace our dining room.

St. Francis Joins the Friars in their Dining Room

With the coming of the Franciscan School of Theology to the Mission this summer our Franciscan community has expanded to 14 friars. I am what is known as the Guardian of the community. St. Francis told his brothers that none of them should be called Superior or try to act in that way with others, but every friary needs someone Br. John Keisler, OFM (left) and Fr. Tom West, OFM (right) displaying the new painting. who will oversee the mundane aspects of community life. For Franciscans, that person is called the Guardian, and is the go-to guy for problems or concerns. Thank God it is only a three-year term and I am only the next one in a long line of great prior Guardians, which includes Fr. Luis, Fr. David and Fr. Larry and which goes all the way back through Fr. Joseph Jeremiah OKeefe to Fr. Antonio Peyri at the founding of the Mission. It is a great blessing for me to serve in such a distinguished lineage. Fr. Tom West, OFM Guardian

It remembers the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem where they look for a posada or lodging, only to be turned away. Eventually, a kindly innkeeper gives them a stable where Mary gives birth to the Savior, Jesus. We journey with Mary and Joseph each night to ask for lodging along with them, and after prayer and song we celebrate with champurrado and pan dulce as they find safety in the warmth of the stable. There is fun too for the children with a piata.

Old Mission San Luis Rey Montessori School

Every year, OMMS is involved in numerous Stewardship projects and two occur during the holidays. Starting before Thanksgiving classrooms adopt at least one family in need of assistance. The students prepare a beautiful hand decorated box and fill it with food or necessities to be given as a gift to help their adopted family celebrate the holidays. Learning to focus on what they can do to help the needy, children are encouraged to give up a treat such as a trip to McDonalds and use the savings to shop for their adopted family basket.

OMMS sixth graders put on a version of Charles Dickens play, Christmas Carol, every year. Eighth Grade Language Arts teacher, Ms. Susan McGuirk, directs Scrooges transformation from a bitter and miserly man to a model Christian who treats others with kindness, generosity and compassion is a must see experience. Join our Old Mission Montessori School Children in the McKeon Center on Monday, December 9th at 6:30pm. The play is free of charge.

Christmas Creche - Childrens Mass

This all started, oh, 790 years ago as in just about eight centuries. But soon, there will be the recreation of that long-ago event, the Christmas Creche. A crche or manger scene depicts the birth of Jesus in three dimensions with statues or live actors.

A cast of about a dozen of Parish Youth Director Matt Franklins troops, will stage a recreation of the original play about 30 minutes prior to the 4pm Childrens Mass on Christmas Eve. The story that the cast will reenact will be that of St. Francis of Assisi who wanted to reenergize the citizens of Grecio, Italy, during celebrations to commemorate the nativity of the infant Jesus. For the rest of the story, join us for the presentation on Dec. 24th at 3:30pm in the Serra Center.
