LESSON 3.1

Represent, Compare, and Order Decimals

The numbers you use every Place Value day are part of the decimal system. To find the value of a number, look at the digits and the position of each digit. A place-value chart can help you. Knowing place values is useful when comparing decimal numbers. Mindy is asked to list 18.3, 17.8, and 24.1 decimal point in order from greatest to least.

Step 1 Mindy compares the first two numbers. She starts at the left. Both numbers have the digit 1 in the tens place. So, Mindy looks at the digits in the ones place. The first number has the digit 8 in the ones place, while the second number has the digit 7. Since 8 7, 18.3 17.8. Step 2 Mindy compares the third number to the greatest number so far, the first number. The third number has the digit 2 in the tens place, while the first number has the digit 1 in the tens place. Since 2 1, 24.1 18.3. Using what she has discovered, Mindy makes the list: 24.1; 18.3; 17.8.

Give the position and the value of each underlined digit.

Add and Subtract Decimals

Binder Ian is buying school supplies. Pen Find the total cost. Step 1: List the items in a column. Remember to align the decimal points. Step 2: Write the decimal point for the answer. Place it directly under the other points. Step 3: Add as you would whole numbers. Remember to regroup if needed. $3.49 $0.88 Paper Highlighter $3.49 0.88 2.79 0.98 . $3.49 0.88 2.79 0.98 $8.14 $2.79 $0.98

The total cost of Ians school supplies is $8.14. Now suppose Ian pays for his supplies with a $20 bill. Find the amount of change he should receive. Step 1: Write the numbers in a column. Remember to align the decimal points. Step 2: Write the decimal point for the answer. Then subtract as you would with whole numbers, regrouping as necessary. Ian should receive $11.86 in change.

Multiply Decimals
Marty worked 26.5 hours this week. He earns $6.40 per hour. How much money did Marty earn this week? To solve, you need to find the product 26.5 6.40. Step 1: Multiply as you would with whole numbers. $6.40 26.5 169600 $6.40 2 decimal places 26.5 1 decimal place 169600 3 decimal places $6.40 26.5 $169.600

Step 2: Count the number of decimal places in the factors.

Step 3: Starting at the right side of the answer, count over that number of places. This is where the decimal point is placed. Marty earned $169.60 this week.

Complete to solve.

Divide with Decimals

Mary has saved $0.35 each day. She now has a total of $9.10. How long has Mary been saving? To solve, you need to divide 9.10 by 0.35. Step 1: Make the divisor a whole number by multiplying the divisor by a multiple of 10. Multiply the dividend by the same multiple of 10. Step 2: Place the decimal point in the quotient directly above the decimal point in the dividend. Divide as you would with whole numbers. Since the remainder is 0, the answer is a whole number. You do not need to show the decimal point. Mary has been saving for 26 days. 0.359 .1 0

Algebra: Decimal Expressions and Equations

You speak and write using words, for example the number of days in a week times the number of weeks Some words can be expressed as numbers or numerical expressions. days weeks 75 An algebraic expression uses a letter to represent a number. For example, if the number of weeks is written as the letter w, the algebraic expression is 7 w. It can also be written as 7w. To evaluate the expression 7w to find the number of days in 8 weeks, write 7 8 56.

Match the algebraic expression with the words.
