PARIS 4 Installation Notes

System Requirements:
PARIS 4 requires: The Microsoft .NET Framework, version 1.1 Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), version 2.8 or higher We recommend Microsoft Jet Service Pack 4 or higher These are all available either from Microsoft, or in the Support Files folder on the PARIS CD. Select the Jet Update appropriate to your operating system, which is indicated by the last two characters in the update program name. PARIS requires a minimum of 50 MB of hard drive space, and recommend at least 128 MB RAM, with the screen resolution set to at least 800x600. Before installing PARIS, we recommend that you install all critical operating system updates, using Microsofts Windows Update function.

Running PARIS across a LAN

PARIS may be run over a mapped drive, after the PARIS 4 LAN Client is installed on the workstation. Install the LAN Client by running the Paris4_LAN_Client.exe either from the CD, or from http://www.IntegraPark.com/Downloads/Paris4_LAN_Client.exe The workstation must have the .NET Framework, MDAC, and Jet Service Pack discussed above. After installing the LAN Client on the workstation, you may wish to create a shortcut on the workstation desktop to the Paris.exe on the mapped drive. Be sure to specify the Start In property of the shortcut as the folder where PARIS is installed. Users will need effective Change (Read/Write/Modify/Delete) permission on the Paris4\Data folder and its subfolders, and Read/Execute permission on the Paris4 folder itself. Remember to check both NTFS and Share permissions. See below for more information regarding data security. If an unhandled error message is displayed immediately after you attempt to start PARIS when running over a LAN, either the workstation does not have the .NET Framework installed, the user lacks Change permission on the Paris4\Data folder, or the workstations .NET Security settings need to be changed. To adjust the security settings, open the Control Panel, and select Administrative Tools, Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Wizards, Adjust .NET Security, then set the Local Intranet level of trust to Full Trust. In rare instances, it has also been necessary to adjust Internet Explorers security settings. If PARIS still will not start after the above update, open Internet Explorer, choose Tools, Internet Options, Security, Local Intranet, Custom Level, and set the security level to medium-low. If that also fails, set the security level to low.

Displaying Help across a LAN

Some Microsoft security patches make it difficult to display compiled HTML screens across a LAN, and the Paris Help system is stored as compiled HTML. If your workstations have a patch that prevents the Help system from displaying correctly over your LAN, copy the Paris.CHM file from the main Paris folder on the server to the root of the workstations C: drive. If the Help file is found in C:\, Paris will use that copy instead of the one on the server.

Citrix/Terminal Server Installation

PARIS works well with either Citrix or Terminal Services. Remember that before installing PARIS, set the server to Install mode (change user /install, from the command prompt), and set the server back to Execute mode after installation (change user /execute).

Data Security
Only those Windows User IDs that need to run Paris should have any access to the Paris program and data folders. Default Windows IDs (such as "Administrator") should not be allowed access to the Paris application or folders. In addition to securing access to the Paris folders with NTFS (and if accessed over a LAN, Share permissions), access to your workstations and network should be protected by requiring strong passwords, implemented in accordance with the PCI Data Security Standard (DSS), including: Do not allow access to group, shared, or generic accounts and passwords Change passwords at least every 90 days Require a minimum password length of at least seven characters Use passwords containing both numeric and alphabetic characters Do not allow an individual to sub a new password that is the same as any of the last four passwords he or she has used Limit repeated access attempts by locking out the user ID after not more than six attempts Set the lockout duration to thirty minutes or until administrator enables the user ID If a session has been idle for more than 15 minutes, require the user to re-enter the password to re-activate the terminal Beyond restricting access to the Paris folders, administrators may further restrict users with the Paris Security Manager. This application, installed by default in the Paris4\Config folder, enables you to specify which parking locations each Windows User ID may access within Paris, and what functions (enter payments, edit Account information, create Parkers, etc.) each User ID may perform. If Paris will be used to charge credit cards, your LAN administrator must ensure that workstation and network access is protected in accordance with the PCI Data Security Standard (DSS). The PCI DSS may be downloaded from www.pcisecuritystandards.org. For more information about PCI compliance with PARIS, please see the PARIS PA-DSS Implementation Guide. Also, for credit card processing, you will need to install and configure the correct PARIS credit card interface software. Please contact IntegraPark for details, as the procedures will vary depending on your credit card processor.

Applications installed in the Config folder

By default, the Paris Security Manager, Configuration Manager, and the Access Log Viewer are installed in the Paris4\Config folder. Non-administrative users have no need of these applications, and may be restricted from accessing this folder and running these programs. Further, the administrator may move this folder elsewhere on the network, if the he wishes. Use of the Security Manager is self-explanatory: For each Windows User ID that will use Paris, specify the parking locations they may access, and the Paris functions they may run. For more information about settings controlled by the Configuration Manager application, see "Using Paris Configuration Manager.pdf".

Special Note when installing Paris to a Vista workstation

If you are installing Paris to a Vista workstation that has User Account Control enabled, you should not install Paris to the Program Files folder. This is because User Account Control will not allow the program to write to files in the Program Files folder, and your parker data will actually be stored in Vista's Virtual Store (C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore). This can cause confusion when backing up your data and installing updates to Paris.
