Fasting is one of the most important religious practices of Jainism, with many fast days and many forms of fasting throughout the year. A form of religious penance and purification, the one fasting must reach the point of not even wanting to eat. One increasingly popular practice is the vow of Santhara, fasting until one dies as one means of achieving moksha. A word of warning - some of these photos might be difficult to see.

Finally, the time-honored tradition of fasting has been taken up many times in the last century as a form of political protest or as a way to raise public awareness. The 40 Hour Famine, as described in this link, is one example of a fasting campaign to raise funds to find world hunger.
