Peggy George

I loved seeing John Clarke in your conference presentation--think it was the Reform Symposium
Barbara Bray 2:09 PM

We are so lucky to have Mt. Abe be our first webinar of our webinar series! Thank you everyone!
Peggy George 2:09 PM 2:09 PM

Hi mokton! Great to have you joining us!

Jim Vanides @jgvanides

Nothing like hitting an anvil to make learning come alive

Barbara Bray 2:10 PM 2:11 PM

Welcome Maria and Dawn!

Peggy George

this was their Connected Educator Month webinar where I was able to view the recording. http://www.personalizelearning.com/2013/10/newpersonalized-learning-models-webinar.html 2:11 PM Hi Maria and Dawn! Welcome! 2:11 PM love this diagram!
Barbara Bray 2:11 PM

It's all about choices. Expanding the ideas of flexible pathways based on initial statement of interest. Love this!
Peggy George 2:12 PM

choice is not often part of the university experience prescribed!

Barbara Bray

so much is
2:12 PM

Evidence of learning to demonstrate mastery of what they learned, know and understand. Yes!
Peggy George 2:13 PM

is this diagram on their website?

Kathleen McClaskey 2:13 PM

Evidence of learning and exhibitions to demonstrate mastery of competencies! How great is that!
lauren 2:13 PM

Peggy, not yet.

Barbara Bray #2 2:14 PM

Check out John's interview about pathways: http://www.personalizelearning.com/2013/08/personal-pathways-tograduation.html

2:14 PM

Peggy George

http://www.mtabe.k12.vt.us/
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:14 PM

What % of your ~800 students are following a personalized pathway?

Peggy George 2:14 PM 2:14 PM 2:16 PM

love that this starts with Middle School!

lauren

about 25% depending on how you count these

Peggy George

I was fortunate to participate in a very progressive Ed.D program at UMass-Amherst (many years ago) where almost all of our courses were independent learning and exploratory. I loved it and learned so much!
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:16 PM

I love the flexibility - How do Universities view this? What do you say to parents who are freaking out over "AP credits" and getting their students to Ivy League universities?
Kathleen McClaskey 2:16 PM

I met some incredible learners at Mt. Abe last month that have designed their pathways to graduation.
Peggy George 2:16 PM

great question Jim!!

2:17 PM lauren

Jim, let's talk about that after the presntation. Great question.
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:17 PM

Great. tx!
Peggy George 2:17 PM 2:19 PM

that's really impressive participation! no structure is scary! overwhelming

Barbara Bray

many MOOCs are like that and can be

2:20 PM

Thank you for sharing how you are developing the process and structure. This will help so many who want to personalize learning.
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:21 PM

I'm trying to imagine how this might scale and apply in large urban districts, such as Oakland Unified (SF Bay Area) or Chicago Public Schools. What words of wisdom would you offer to system leaders in these large school districts?
Peggy George 2:22 PM

tech gurus are wonderful

Barbara Bray 2:23 PM

Hybrid model might be the way to meet the requirements and the importance of building tools yourself - Lauren is awesome!
Peggy George 2:23 PM

Diigo is my favorite social bookmarking tool!!

Kathleen McClaskey 2:23 PM

Thank you Lauren in giving us the history on portfolios. This is very helpful to know.
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:24 PM

I use Diigo in my course I teach for teachers - it's a great way to do social bookmarking
Gary Falcon` 2:26 PM 2:27 PM

Are there any plans to extend this to elementary students?

Peggy George

is there a place on their school/district web site that describes their personalized program?
Dawn 2:27 PM

how important is a reliable internet connection?

lauren 2:27 PM

Yes. The Ends Policy that Caroline referenced will be the backbone for future work.

Rose

2:27 PM 2:27 PM

What did you say you were using for student portfolios?
Jim Vanides @jgvanides

Can you say a thing or two about "Personalize Learning", the org you hail from?
lauren 2:27 PM

Rose, using Google Sites

lauren 2:28 PM 2:28 PM

We made a template that all students share.

Peggy George

a reliable internet connection is important for moderators but usually both wireless and direct ethernet connect work fine 2:28 PM that's just part of embracing technology! 2:29 PM love that quote!!!
Barbara Bray 2:29 PM 2:29 PM 2:29 PM

Robin has it right - learners drive their own learning This is the idea of personalizing learning
Peggy George

what a fun project!!!

2:30 PM Jim Vanides @jgvanides

I love that it depends on students doing their own networking; students with their own Personalized Learning Network are unstoppable!
lauren 2:30 PM

AND he met the school competencies while doing it!

Peggy George 2:30 PM

do all students get to choose their own mentor?

lauren 2:30 PM

Yes, Peggy, although, of course they need to be approved by the adults

Barbara Bray 2:30 PM

10

Mentors can be any age older and younger from anywhere - very cool! 2:31 PM I could definitely learn from you Robin!!
lauren 2:31 PM

Any they can be anyWHERE. We want to expand the variety of people by going online.
Peggy George 2:31 PM

is their eportfolio their documentation for learning to earn credits?

lauren 2:32 PM

Yes, Peggy, along with a high stakes 'exhibition'.

Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:32 PM

"Plasma Speaker" - how cool!

Peggy George 2:32 PM

that is awesome Lauren!! Tell us more about the high stakes exhibition

lauren

2:32 PM

They will tell you soon.

Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:32 PM

Does the school find that "grades" become less relevant?

Peggy George 2:32 PM

love that slide!!

Gary Falcon` 2:33 PM

This is fantastic. I love that there's room to make mistakes and learn/refine as you explore the topic.
lauren 2:33 PM

Well, grades are a bit of an issue using PowerSchool. Caroline will tell you more soon.
Barbara Bray 2:33 PM

I love hearing from Robin from his point of view how he learns best
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:35 PM

11

How does all this "extreme personalizing" align with whatever "high stakes" testing your state requires? Or can you submit your portfolio in lieu of taking a "graduation exit exam"?
lauren 2:36 PM

Eventually the portfolio will be one path to graduation. Right now students have some required classes and will all have to take SBAC. To date they've had to take NECAPS.
Peggy George 2:36 PM

Lauren has a great blog you can explore later http://innovationanesu.blogspot.com/

lauren 2:36 PM

Thanks so much Peggy!

Kathleen McClaskey 2:36 PM

It is wonderful to hear that Robin has choices in how he wants to demonstrate is learning
Peggy George 2:37 PM

that's such a great point!! easy to document with photos and screenshots/scans but also really important to add text to articulate the learning process
Barbara Bray 2:37 PM

Multiple modes of expressing what he knows and understands. Robin finds the gap using this flow of support
Rose 2:38 PM

What's the case load of your counselors? How many students are they responsible for tracking?
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:38 PM

Can you explain what you mean by a "punch list"?

Peggy George 2:38 PM 2:39 PM

is there a timeline for that or who decides when each step happens? the big game.... exhibition!

12

Jim Vanides @jgvanides

2:39 PM 2:39 PM

Lauren - Love your blog! Are you on Twitter as well?

lauren

Thanks Jim, yes to Twitter! @lparren

Barbara Bray 2:41 PM 2:41 PM

Jim - just followed you @bbray27 Multiple use space - flexible learning spaces - different than a classroom
Kathleen McClaskey

2:42 PM

It is a wonderful calming space

Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:42 PM

I love your attention to "learning spaces" (v. nicer "jails"

Barbara Bray

!!
2:42 PM

feels like a professional workspace - yeah to no fluorescent lights

2:42 PM Peggy George

a learning lounge
Barbara Bray 2:42 PM

like the idea of a "learning lounge"

Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:42 PM

"Just say no to cubicles"

lauren 2:42 PM

Hi Catrina! Yea!
Peggy George 2:43 PM

tear down those walls...

Barbara Bray 2:43 PM

culture of learning
Gary Falcon` 2:43 PM

13

no fluorescent lights & no cubicles? Much nicer than most professional workplaces, actually
Peggy George 2:43 PM

true Gary!
Barbara Bray 2:44 PM

Culture shift in and outside of the community - roles are changing

Peggy George 2:45 PM

this is their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MtAbrahamUnionHighSchool

Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:45 PM

Would love to hear more about how you're making the culture shift - how do you support their changing role? What does PD look like?
Barbara Bray 2:45 PM

Asking questions - how wonderful!

Peggy George 2:45 PM

that is so true--those doing the work are doing the learning! the students should leave each day as tired as the teachers
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:46 PM

Can you repeat that great mantra? "Those who are doing... are learning..."
Kathleen McClaskey 2:46 PM

Those that have been doing the work are doing the learning!
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:46 PM

tx
- Melinda joined the Main Room. ( 2:46 PM ) Catrina 1 2:46 PM

HI!!! Rock Stars!!

Peggy George 2:46 PM

Welcome Catrina and Melinda!!

Lauren 2:47 PM

14

Those who are doing the work are doing the learning.
Kathleen McClaskey 2:47 PM

Thanks Lauren
Peggy George 2:49 PM

that can be a real challenge getting your transcript to reflect your true learning! I had to write course documentation for all of my doctoral work to 2:50 PM use it for accreditation in AZ because they didn't recognize the titles of the courses and they needed to know certain things were part of the courses. A lot of work!!
2:50 PM

that's what happens with very progressive courses

- Dawn left the Main Room. ( 2:51 PM ) Gary Falcon` 2:52 PM

So for now, the "high stakes" testing is still required. Do you have any data about performance on these tests? Is there more apprehension from students when approaching those tests?
Peggy George 2:52 PM

I'd love to hear the answer to Jim's question about scalability to very large schools
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:52 PM

Congrats for how much you've accomplished in just 7 semesters!

Gary Falcon` 2:52 PM

Amazing that all this has been accomplished in 3 years

Peggy George 2:52 PM 2:52 PM

very exciting progress! love that point--there is no plugin for personalized learning
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 2:53 PM 2:53 PM 2:54 PM

"Maker Portfolios" - Woohoo! Would someone please tell Stanford about this?? <wink>
Gary Falcon`

What staffing changes were required? Is this being done with the same number of staff as before personalized learning was introduced?
15

Jim Vanides @jgvanides

2:55 PM 2:55 PM 2:57 PM

"scalled smallness" - love it, but not easy! "scaled"

Barbara Bray

Trust factor
Peggy George 2:58 PM

that's a huge case load!!!!

lauren 2:58 PM

We can't accommodate all of the learners who'd like to join.

2:59 PM Barbara Bray

waterfalling the kids - interesting term

Peggy George 2:59 PM

I imagine there is GREAT student interest so it would be really hard to staff that!
2:59 PM

great image!! keeping the plates spinning this is an exciting series!! I love David Truss and what he is doing with Inquiry Hub!!!
Jim Vanides @jgvanides

3:00 PM

3:01 PM

Thanks for sharing your Personalized Learning pathway model! Congratulations - and best wishes to Robin!
josie jordan #2 3:01 PM

Thanks for joining!

Peggy George 3:03 PM

the question about how the students do on the standardized tests is something people always want to know do you have any data about that? 3:03 PM love that!!! he's a self-advocate!!! the ultimate in personalized learning!! 3:04 PM very helpful description about the timeline and
16

deadlines/benchmarks along the way

Jim Vanides @jgvanides 3:05 PM

Wow - my head is spinning trying to imagine how to activate all the talent of the students in Oakland & Chicago to let them learn this way - perhaps they can finally experience "success" when they learn to do this!
Peggy George 3:05 PM

good luck Jim!!! that's a huge undertaking but it would be amazing!!

Jim Vanides @jgvanides 3:06 PM

"Off at the forge" - love it. A new take on "anywhere learning"; it's not just about taking your laptop to the coffee shop
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 3:06 PM 3:06 PM 3:07 PM

But "forging" isn't on the test, I presume? Is metallurgy?

Kathleen McClaskey

But CCSS requires problem solving, crtical thinking etc.

Jim Vanides @jgvanides 3:07 PM

The "core" can be "common", but the path needs to personal

Jim Vanides @jgvanides

3:08 PM

Bravo to Mount Abe! The real payoff of this approach is AFTER schooling and you're being interviewed for a job
Peggy George 3:08 PM

another great quote Jim!!

Jim Vanides @jgvanides 3:09 PM

Your "grades" only matter in the interview for about 30 seconds...

Peggy George 3:09 PM

if that long! I never considered grades or transcripts when I interviewed teachers as a principal.
Gary Falcon` 3:09 PM 3:10 PM

Great answer - "learning as much as I can about everything I can"

17

Kathleen McClaskey

That's right, Robin!

Jim Vanides @jgvanides 3:10 PM

WOOHOO! Did I just hear Robin say it doesn't really measure what's important?? RIGHT ON, ROBIN!!
Catrina 1 3:10 PM

Nice job!!
Peggy George 3:10 PM

Robin has given us some fantastic quotable quotes!!

Barbara Bray 3:10 PM 3:11 PM

learning as much as I can about everything I can - love this quote

Gary Falcon`

Can anybody speak to how the shift to personalized learning got started? What was the "spark" that started this?
Peggy George 3:11 PM

Thanks for a great webinar! It's a wonderful kickoff to the series! Thank you all!
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 3:11 PM

what's the twitter hashtag for personalized learning?

Gary - don't think we'll have enought time to talk about the shift to PL here. We'll possibly do a separate webinar on that.

I'm here
Barbara Bray #2 3:13 PM

Lauren - love running into you at ISTE

lauren 3:14 PM

Get your elbow out of my way, Barbara!

Barbara Bray 3:14 PM

Personalized Learning has started in the UK over 25-30 years ago also. We will be sharing Chris Watkins work 3:14 PM @lparren - we love to rub elbows - look where it got us
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 3:14 PM

Your approach looks like the most "personal" approach to "personalized" 3:15 PM It's not "personalizing what the grownups want you to do"
Gary Falcon` 3:15 PM

thank you
Rose 3:15 PM

Thanks so much!
lauren 3:15 PM

Please remember that this is a hybrid model and not an all or nothing approach.
Jim Vanides @jgvanides 3:15 PM

Well done! Thanks for the inspiration!
