Previous study y
A study done by Subroto et al. (2006) involving 86 sediment samples and 73 crude oils could determine FIVE groups of source rocks in the Kutai Basin. Basin The grouping may indicate the depositional environment of sediments and the organic matter content.

Group 1 Sixty-two (out of seventy-three) crude oils and thirty-five (out of eighty-six) sediments belong to this group; Distribution of the tricyclic terpanes are specific, ifi characterised h i db by the h C19 and d C21 tricyclic terpane being subordinate; Relatively y abundant of bicadinanes; ; Relatively high concentration of oleananes.

The coaly materials occurred in the Kutai Basin, East Kalimantan show a significant role in contributing hydrocarbons for Indonesia. The contribution is in the form of oil and gas (conventional and unconventional).
