SERIES: Isaiah, Part 1 (Judgment But Hope) TITLE: Program 2 Sins Painful Consequences TUESDAY (3/8/11) OPEN Are you one of those persons that say, Listen, that sounds great, I would love to do that? Sure, lets go. Lets move, but you never think about what is the end of it all? Where is it going to lead? Im afraid that thats the way that many of us are living our lives. Sounds good, feels good, looks good, lets do it. But the question is where does it lead? What are the ramifications of it all? Well talk about that today as we look at Gods precepts for life from the book of Isaiah. PART ONE We live in such an instant society, in such a business of life that is constantly going on, such activity that many times we act without thinking, and what we forget, Beloved, is this, that actions have consequences. Havent you just said, Oh, why did I do that? Oh, how stupid I am. Why did I say that? What on earth was I thinking of when I did that? Why? Because what happens? Theres a consequence to that decision, to that action and we never thought

it through. Or we, out of the sympathy of our heart, out of the compassion of our heart, out of the desire to be kind and to be good, take an action that is against the Word of God and we think, Ive got it covered. Im okay. Its going to be all right. And then later, and it may be years down the road we pay for that action. Thats happened to me. Now it was not a moral thing. It was not something where I was immoral in my behavior or in my thoughts or anything like that, but it was an action of compassion that I knew deep in my heart I shouldnt do it. I did it out of good faith. I did it out of good will. And you know what? It cost an awful, awful lot. And all I could say to the Lord was, Lord, You know that I deserve this because I did not walk according to your precepts of life. I didnt stop. I didnt think that this could happen. I was assured that wouldnt happen. And so I went ahead out of t he kindness and goodness of my heart and got in trouble. Listen, there is a God in heaven, and if we belong to Him, has a code for us to live by. You may not like that. Were living in a time when we dont want authority. Were living in a time when we want to be our own authority. Were living in a time where we want to do what we want to do, when we want to do it. And society seems to applaud their hands. They seem to stand in the bleachers and cheer us on because thats what they want to do, and we forget. Listen, O heavens, and hear, O earth; for the Lord [has] spoken. (Isaiah 1:2) You and I are studying the book of Isaiah. An incredible, incredible book of prophecy, a book that is quoted by Jesus Christ and by the apostles more than any other Old Testament prophet. It is Gods message to His people. He says, Sons I have reared up andthey have [rebelled] against Me. (Isaiah 1:2) They have not thought through the consequences of their actions. There are many that would tell you today, Precious One, that there are no absolutes. They want everything to be gray, no black, no white. And what theyre doing today in our culture is, they are despising anyone that says there is a right, there is a wrong and there is a consequence if you do whats wrong. They are people

that say, Look, you cannot really know truth for yourself and speak with authority. If were going to reach this generation for Jesus Christ we need to put up the Word of God because they cant understand it anyway. We need to relate to them. We need to get into their mix of life and just, in a sense, shelve the Word. Thats what theyre saying. Dont tell me there are absolutes. Dont tell me what to believe and what not to believe and dont tell me how to obey or that I have to obey or behave. Dont tell me that. Just let me be me. I want to tell you something. If God lets you be you and does not intervene in your life and gets your attention, if He does not do that you are damned, Precious One. You are condemned and He doesnt want you to be. It is no accident that you stopped at this place to hear this program at this time. God has spoken, and Isaiah opens up with this statement. It is a vision that God gave him concerning Judah, Gods people, and Jerusalem, Gods city. It came in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. (See Isaiah 1:1) And as we study Isaiah were going to meet Uzziah. Were going to meet Ahaz. Were going to meet Hezekiah. Jotham, no, but were going to know what the times were like during the reign of Jotham, who was the king that followed Uzziah, who was the son of Uzziah. And this is what he says, Listen, O heavens, and [earth] hear, O earth; for the Lord speaks. (Isaiah 1:2) God has spoken. Its pure, unadulterated truth and you and I need to listen and we need to embrace it. This is what he says, Sons I have reared and brought up, but they have revolted against Me. (Isaiah 1:2) Now I showed you in our last program that Exodus 4:22 God calls Israel His son. He calls them His people. But what I want to do is I want to you from Exodus chapter 4, verse 22 and youre writing crossreferences, and I hope that you have downloaded your free study guide. You have the text of Isaiah in front of you. That can be where you write your notes right next to the Scriptures. And then what I would suggest that you do is eventually transfer them into your Bible. So he says, Sons I have reared and brought up. (Isaiah 1:2) So next to that youre going to

write Exodus 4:22. Then I want you to write Exodus chapter 6. So I want you to go to Exodus chapter 6 because this is going to help you see what is transpiring in this first chapter of Isaiah. He says in Exodus chapter 6, verse 2. Says, [And the Lord] spoke further to Moses and said to him, I am the LORD; and I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He says, As God Almighty, but by My name, LORD, and LORD is in all caps. He said, I did not make Myself known to them. (Exodus 6:2-3) Now He did not make Himself known up until this point. LORD here, although the name is used, LORD here, is the most holy and sacred name there is for God. Its the tetragrammaton is what they call it. Its four letters, YHWH Yahweh and you put in the vowels. It is a name that is so holy and so sacred that the Jews will not even speak it. They will not say Yahweh or Jehovah. They will say, Adonai. So if you see Lord and its just a capital L and the rest are small letters, thats a translation of Adonai, but if its all capitals thats the translation of Yahweh this most sacred name. He says, I also established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they sojourned. (Exodus 6:4) So God made a deal with them, a covenant, an unbreakable covenant, an agreement made by passing through pieces of flesh. And He did this and you see that in Genesis chapter 15. (See Genesis 15:9-21) He said, I [made a] covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaanin which they sojourned. Furthermore I have heard the groanings of the sons of Israel, because the Egyptians are holding them in bondage, and I have remembered My covenant. (Exodus 6:4-5) Now here again is the covenant. And the covenant, Hes saying I remember that I was going to give them a land. I remember in Genesis 15 that I told them that they would be slaves in a land for 400 years and then I would deliver them. Im a covenant keeping God. I made a covenant with them and I delivered them. He says, Say, therefore, to the sons of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. They

were slaves there. And I will deliver you from their bondage. I will also redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. Then I will take you for My people, and I will be your God. (Exodus 6:6-7) In Isaiah He is speaking to people who are His sons. He says it in Exodus 4:22 when He says, [Go tell Pharaoh, Let My son, My firstborn go, and if you dont Im going to kill your firstborn. And Pharaoh said, No but this is all said before the fact, and so God killed the firstborn son of Pharaoh and the firstborn son of every Egyptian, firstborn male of all the animals in Egypt on that night of the Passover because they would not let Gods son go.] (PARAPHRASE Exodus 4:22-23) I want to tell you something, if youre Gods child youre Gods child and God is very jealous over you. God has reared you up. He has brought you, and that word reared up Sons I have rearedup, (Isaiah 1:2) means that I have brought you up and I have given you special privileges. There are special privileges to being a child of God. You say, I know I can be wealthy. That is not one of the privileges, special privileges of being a child of God. You say, But Deuteronomy says that. Oh, but listen, you need to know the whole counsel of God and thats what this program is all about. Well be back in just a minute. Dont go away. Dont miss whats coming. PART TWO Welcome back, student of truth. I am so proud of you for wanting to know Gods Word, for spending the time, for making this date for you and I to meet and look at the Word of God, to discover truth for yourself. I do pray that you have downloaded the free study guide. I do pray that youve got your colored pencils and that youre helping yourself by identifying key repeating words. I pray that you are are taking that observation nuh-, worksheet and taking notes, because God intends for you to know truth. God intends for you to understand it. God intends for you to grow. So next to Isaiah chapter 1, verse 2 where you have written Exodus 4:22 and those

verses in Exodus chapter 6, I want you to write Romans 9:4. Romans 9:4. Now Im going to back up to verse 3 and Im going to tell you what is happening. Paul is laying out the constitution of our faith. Hes explaining [the gospel of Jesus Christ, which is the power of God to salvation to everyone that believes. Now listen carefully, to the Jew first and then also to the Greek or to the Gentile.] (PARAPHRASE Romans 1:16) In Romans chapter 9, 10, and 11 God is showing you His sovereignty over His people and he is explaining to us why all of Israel did not believe that Yeshua, that Jesus was the Savior. And why did they not embrace Him as the Messiah? Now Paul is a Jew. He was a Hebrew of the Hebrews. He was of the tribe of Benjamin. He studied at the feet of Gamaliel. He was a Pharisee of the Pharisees. He was as religious as they came. (See Philippians 3:4-6) But he recognized that Jesus was the Messiah. And so now hes writing and he says in verse 3, For I could wishmyself were accursed, separated from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh. (Romans 9:3) My kinsman, my what? My fellow Israelites, my fellow Hebrews, my fellow Jews. He says, Who are Israelites, to whom belongs the adoption as sons, and the glory and the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple services and the promises, whose are the fathers, [Abraham, Isaac and Jacob] and from whom is the Christ [the Messiah] according to the flesh, [Christ] who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen. (Romans 9:4-5) And thats what he writes. And so what I want you to see is they were children of God in the Old Testament, the Israelites were. Theyre children of God in the New Testament. to [them] belongs the adoptions as sons. (Romans 9:4) Now are all going to believe? No. And if they dont believe whats going to happen to them? Theyre going to be accursed just like every Muslim, just like every Hindu, just like every Buddhist, just like every agnostic, just like every atheist. Why? Youre going to see it in this book. Youre going to know that you know because God puts it down in this book. [He] is the Lordthere is

no other. (Isaiah 45:5) And someday He is coming with righteousness and with justice to judge this world. [And] every knee will bowandevery tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of the Father. (Philippians 2:10-11) And for many of them it will be too late. So hes saying, Sons I have reared, I have brought to these special privileges. and brought up, but they have revolted against Me. (Isaiah 1:2) Now the word, revolted in the Hebrew means this: that they have turned against Gods authority. It is a willful flouting of your own authority over God. Its saying, I dont care. I dont care. Im going to do what I want to do. God may say it, but Im going to re -explain it. Im going to redefine it. Im going to take this and I am going to deconstruct it and show you that it is wrong. I want to tell you something, you can deconstruct the Word of God all you want, but it doesnt change the fact that its the Word of God and it cannot be deconstructed and God will judge you according to the Word. Were living in a time when they want you to think you can live any way you want, do anything you want to do. You cant. He says, An ox knows its owner, a donkey its masters manger, but Israel does not know, (Isaiah 1:3) and that know means they know intellectually. They dont recognize Him for who He is. Do you recognize God for who He is, Precious One? Do you look at Him and you say, You are God and I need to obey You? He says, Alas, sinful nation, people weighed down with iniquity, offspring of evildoers. He says, Sons who act corruptly! They have abandoned the Lord, they have despised the Holy One of Israel. They have just gone off and done their own thing. They havent thought about the consequences. They have turned away from Him, in their own exuberance, in their own intellect, in their own evaluation. (Isaiah 1:4) So what does he say? Where will you be stricken again, as you continue in your rebellion? (Isaiah 1:5) Because listen to me very carefully, Precious One. When you decide: Hey, Im not going to do it! And you walk away, thats rebellion. And because God is

ISAIAH, PART 1 (JUDGMENT BUT HOPE) PROGRAM 2 (#911047) WEEK 1 (#911310) 2011 PRECEPT MINISTRIES INTERNATIONAL

God He cannot let you rebel. And so this is what he says, Where will you be stricken again, as you continue in your rebellion? The whole head is sick. Your thinkings off. The whole heart is faint. Youre just collapsing. Youre not strong. Youre not courageous. From the sole of the foot even to the head, He says, there is nothing sound in it, in your body, only bruises [and] welts and raw wounds, not pressed out or bandaged [and not] softened with oil. (Isaiah 1:5-6) What has God done? Well I want you to go to Psalms 38. I want you to see what God is saying here. But I want you to know that this was written by David, that is a man described as a man after Gods own heart, but a man who sinned, but a man who understood these truths. He says in verse 3, There is no soundness in my flesh because of Your indignation. (Psalms 38:3) God, I took the wrong action and its the consequence that has come from You. There is no health in my bones because of my sin. For my iniquities [have] gone over my head; as a heavy burden they weigh too much for me. My wounds grow foul and fester because of my folly. I am bent over and greatly bowed down, [and] I go mourning all the day. He says, My loins are filled with burningthere is no soundness in my flesh. Im benumbed and badly crushed; I groan because of the agitation of my heart. And then he says, Lord, all my desire is before You; and my sighing is not hidden from You. (Psalms 38:9) What is Gods precept for life? You may be wounded and hurt because you didnt stop and think about the consequences of your actions, but He is there. His name is the One who heals, Jehovah-Rapha, the Lord God who heals you from all your diseases and all your destructions. Hes there for you. Youre going to see this message in Isaiah. But today your precept for life is this: remember actions have consequences.
