f you use shampoo to wash your hair, it probably works up into a nice thick lather. This nice thick lather, for many of us, really defines the shampooing experience. Imagine, then, discovering that this lather could kill you. In 1998, an e-mail first made the Internet rounds that instilled fear in shampoo users around the globe. This e-mail, anonymous of course, claimed that your shampoo could be giving you cancer. The culprit, according to the e-mail, is sodium laureth sulfate, also known as SLES. This ingredient creates lather. In fact, the more common lather-producing agent is sodium lauryl sulfate, SLES's less-expensive cousin. The molecules are very similar, though. Sodium lauryl sulfate is a detergent, a crystalline salt of sulfated lauryl alcohol. It's good at general cleaning because it's a surfactant -- a substance that breaks up surface tension, the bonds between molecules in the outer layer of a compound. This is how SLS produces lather. It eases those bonds, allowing two separate entities -- say, shampoo and your hair -- to interact more effectively. Without this loosening of surface bonds, shampoo wouldn't be as good at removing dirt and oil from your hair. SLS is a common ingredient in all sorts of cleaning products. You'll also find it in toothpastes, mouthwashes and, as noted with horror in the anonymous e-mail, garage-floor cleaners. The most common reaction at this point is: Really? The stuff in our shampoo is also in garage-floor cleaners? How can that be safe? It's a bold claim, and the e-mail had the desired effect. Lots of people switched to "all natural" shampoos that proudly assert their SLS-free status, presumably to avoid shampoo-related cancer risk. But are these people really less likely to develop cancer than those of us who use regular old SLS-containing shampoo? In this article, we'll find out why SLS has gotten a bad rep and see whether our shampoo is really giving us cancer. As it turns out, there are certain risks associated with sodium lauryl sulfate. So, is our quest for clean hair going to kill us?

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Cancer

Almost every shampoo you find in the hair-care aisle has sodium lauryl (or laureth) sulfate in it. Considering that these products have to be approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration before they end up on the shelf, can it really be that they causecancer? Was the 1998 e-mail right? As with so many widely forwarded,fear-inducing e-mails, it's wrong. Sources from the American Cancer Society to health expert Dr. Andrew Weil to TreeHugger.com to the International Agency for Research on Cancer all say the same thing: SLS is noncarcinogenic [sources: Elton, LEDA and Snopes]. That SLS is an ingredient in garage-floor cleaners doesn't mean much. Arsenic, an ingredient in wood preservatives, is also in our drinking water. But in our water, it doesn't kill us -- it's all about the level of concentration.

So, if it doesn't cause cancer or kill us, then what's the deal with sodium lauryl sulfate? Sodium lauryl sulfate can hurt you, but not in the way the e-mail rumor suggests. SLS can irritate skinunder certain circumstances. It may seem strange that a cosmetic product like shampoo would contain an irritant, but the only way SLS actually irritates the skin is if it's left on for an extended period of time. It's entirely legitimate to say that if you like to leave shampoo on your hair all day, you should probably go SLS-free or face a dry, rashy scalp. You may also notice that your toothpaste container warns you not to swallow the stuff inside, and part of the reason for that is SLS. Will you get cancer if you swallow too much SLS-containing toothpaste? Doubtful. But you may end up with a case of diarrhea. The worst-case scenario with an SLS-containing shampoo, then, is irritation if you leave it on your head too long. Oh, and you're looking at possible toxicity if you swallow about 16 pounds (7.5 kilograms) of SLS-containing toothpaste [source: Queensland Health]. The SLS-free market has really boomed since the late '90s when that incorrect e-mail made the rounds -so much so, in fact, that many experts suspect the e-mail originated from a natural-foods marketing agency [source: LEDA]. Still, even with the total lack of evidence linking SLS and cancer, some people would rather stay away from a potential irritant. For them, there are lots of SLS-free shampoos offered by natural-cosmetics companies. You can find them in any health-food-type store and all over the Internet, and they don't cost any more than most regular shampoos. Parabenii noi descoperiri tiinifice asupra nocivitii lor

5 noiembrie 2013 Invata sa traiesti sanatos, Naional, Prima pagin

Fiind creai dup chipul i asemnnarea Lui, ar trebui s urmm exemplul i s susinem n micare natura proprie, trupul, cu ajutorul acestor substane naturale

Center for Environmental Health

The Center for Environmental Health (CEH) revealed independent testing on Tuesday finding a cancer-causing chemical in 98 shampoos, soaps and other personal care products sold by major national retailers. The chemical, cocamide diethanolamine (cocamide DEA), a chemicallymodified form of coconut oil used as a thickener or foaming agent in many products, was listed by California as a known carcinogen last year.

Products tested with high levels of cocamide DEA include shampoos made by Colgate Palmolive, Colomer, Paul Mitchell and many others. In addition, products marketed for children and a product falsely labeled as organic were found with the chemical, in violation of California law. CEH filed a California lawsuit Tuesday against four companies that sell products containing cocamide DEA, and the nonprofit has sent legal notices to more than 100 other companies that produce and/or sell cocamide DEA-tainted products that their products violate state law. Most people believe that products sold in major stores are tested for safety, but consumers need to know that they could be doused with a cancer-causing chemical every time they shower or shampoo, said Michael Green, executive director of CEH. We expect companies to take swift action to end this unnecessary risk to our childrens and families health.

In addition to many brand name shampoos and personal care products (see the full list, below), the CEH testing found cocamide DEA in store-brand products purchased at Walmart, Trader Joes, Pharmaca and Kohls. A store brand childrens bubble bath from Kmart and a childrens shampoo/conditioner from Babies R Us were also found with cocamide DEA. Falsely labeled organic products from Organic by Africas Best also tested for high levels of the cancer-causing chemical (CEH previously won a legal settlement with this company requiring it to end its use of phony organic labels). CEH has purchased the shampoos and other products containing cocamide DEA at Bay Area, CA, locations of major retailers and from online retailers since June, and commissioned an independent lab to determine the total content of the chemical in the products. In many cases, products contain more than 10,000 ppm cocamide DEA, and one shampoo tested at more than 200,000 ppm (20 percent) cocamide DEA. California listed cocamide DEA in June 2012 as a chemical known to cause cancer based on the assessment by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which evaluated skin exposure tests on animals. POISON SHAMPOO: THE SHOCKINGLY TOXIC INGREDIENTS EXPOSED

Posted in: Disease & Toxins, Health & Nutrition

To EndAllDisease, we begin by eliminating every source of toxic exposure in our lives, and what better place to begin than with your own personal care products? I took the liberty of going to my local drug store, from where most people buy their shampoo, and took photos of 20 of the most popular and commonly used shampoo products so I could investigate each ingredient individually. I was shocked at what I had discovered. Most people clean their hair and bodies everyday with poison, brush their teeth with poison, rub poison underneath their armpits, clean their clothes with poison, and wash their dishes with poison and then after years of this abuse, they wake up one day with cancer and wonder why. Then, of course, everybody pats them on the back and tells them its not their fault, and then we all blame it on genetics and cry together like we are somehow victimized by the world around us. Heres the Big & Empowering Secret: We are not victims of disease, and disease doesnt happen by accident. Below I have analyzed one of the most popular brands of shampoo for your review. In any personal care product, each individual ingredient either enhances or diminishes your state of health. Put even more simply, each ingredient is either a nutrient, or a poison. Its time to take a look at all of the ingredients and make an educated decision as to what you want to be washing your hair with.

Do you know what chemicals are lurking in your shampoo? (Photo: Nasowas/Getty)
Ever try reading the ingredient list on your shampoo bottle? Its like a Latin haiku. We asked beauty industry chemist and author David Pollock, the author of Just Stop The Lies: The Secrets The Beauty Industry Doesnt Want You To Know, to tell us what all those complicated-sounding ingredients are and what they do. Pollock was behind the formation of a number of the industrys top-selling items for companies like Art of Shaving, Bliss Spa, Brookstone, Smashbox, and LOreal/SkinCeuticals before he had a

change of heart and shifted his career focus to educate consumers and companies on what theyre putting on their bodies. In short, he knows his stuffand now, so do you. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate/Sodium Laureth Sulfate Once found in pretty much every shampoo, these ingredients help cleanse and foam. Both are derived from coconut oil, but theyre two different ingredients. Theyre similar, but the Laureth goes through an ethoxylation process, says Pollock. Which means? Ethoxylation results in a byproduct called 1,4 dioxane its not listed on the label, but that is the cancer-causing aspect of the ingredient. So, avoid any ingredients ending in eth. Which means you want to avoid ammonium laureth sulfate. While it used to be found in almost every shampoo, when concerns were raised over the ingredients toxicity level, a lot of companies switched over to the ammonium versionsnot that its much better. Says Pollock, The sodium and ammonium laureth sulfates are known cancer-causing ingredients. So what should you look for instead? Anything with the words glucose or glucoside in themfor example, sodium lauryl glucose or lauryl glucose. Sodium Chloride It may sound sinister, but sodium chloridefound in thousands of shampoosis just salt used to thicken or trigger thickening capabilities in your shampoo. No need to fretor search for another alternative. Cocamidopropyl Betaine Youll find this foaming agenta surfact derived through a chemical process with coconut oilin shampoo and body washes. In a finished product, it causes no harm to the body, and while there are alternatives, theyre not necessary. Polysorbates This solvent or emulsifier helps to bind oil and water together, and is often used to dissolve in the fragrance or other oil additives. And while its predominantly found in conditioners, there are some shampoos that carry it, too. But this ones loaded with trouble for your body. Its damaging at a few levels, Pollock explains. The chemical process isnt one of my favorites, and while some professionals dont report any real health concern, mine comes from the reaction with the scalp (in haircare products) and the skin (in face and body products) since it often leaves a residue on the skin, disrupts the skins natural pH, and emulsifies lipids in the natural protective barrier. There are alternatives to using polysorbates, but as Pollock warns, Theyre expensive, so theyre often not used. My favorites are derived from corn: zea mays or maize, often listed as corn water or propanediol. Citric Acid Its not just for oranges. This citrus fruit derivative, part of the alpha hydroxyl acid family, can be found in thousands of personal care productsincluding many in the natural line of care. Typically its used to lower the pH balance. And theres no need to fretits all good for your body, so theres no healthier alternative needed. Glycol Not all glycol is created equal. Its a common ingredient in hair and personal care products, but there are different types. Says Pollock, The more common are polyethylene glycol, often listed as PEG. These, again, are ethoxylated and are cancer-causing chemicals. Its used as a solvent to incorporate products into a formula, and theyre extremely dangeroustheyre known carcinogens. So what can we use in their place? The corn maize-derived solvent listed above, Pollock suggests.

Amodimethicone That smooth feeling you get when you run your hands through freshly conditioned hair? Thats amodimethicone, a silicone-based polymer used to seal in moisture. But it comes with its own host of troubles. Dimethicones and silicones are occlusive, meaning they dont allow something to breathethey seal in moisture and seal out everything else, Pollock notes. I avoid dimethicones and silicones when possible because I believe the scalp needs to breathe. Sealing the scalp, in my opinion, could lead to thinning of the hair. However, on the hair follicle, it can protect it from heat and provide shine. So what should you use instead? Look for natural oils like jojoba, argan, rose hip, sweet almond, olive oil or shea butter. Behentrimonium Chloride Another type of salt, behentrimonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium salt used in shampoos, conditioners and hairstyling products as a preservative. But is it damaging to your body? It can have some level of irritation, just like any preservative can, Pollock explains. Preservatives are meant to kill bacteria and contaminants, so they have to have some level of aggressiveness. This alone is often not the sole preservativemost formulators use a combination of preservatives, each with its own particular function or bacteria to attack. But I dont have a real problem with it. If youre concerned, though, Pollock recommends looking for products with dehydroacetic acid and benzyl alcohol instead. Hydrolysed Soy Protein This is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a soy-derived protein, including their amino acid compoundswhich are essential building blocks. Found in tons of different haircare products, hydrolysed soy protein is thought to nourish and strengthen the hair follicle. But whether its problematic for your body or not depends on your constitution. Some have a problem with soy, Pollock admits. Its processed, so those with soy allergies wouldnt necessarily have a problem. Some doctors swear by soy as the key to any diet or part of any healthy lifestyle, while some think you should avoid soy. In this form, I use it and dont have a problem. If youd rather play it safe, Pollock recommends other hydrolyzed proteinslike rice, vegetable or wheatas an alternative. Hydrolysed Collagen Heres the trick with collagen: Its a key component to our bodies, but the skin cant absorb it because the molecule is too large. So while its not damaging to your body, any brand claiming to strengthen your hair like conditioners or hair masksis just giving you a load of marketing hype. Says Pollock, The best bet is to get the body to synthesize it, using a peptide, vitamin C or other technology to get the body to synthesize collagen on its own. Cetrimonium Chloride Both shampoos and conditioners are the home for this quaternary ammonium compound, which is most often used as a preservative. Its about as sinister as any of the other preservatives listed above, but as Pollock says, As a conditioning agent, I dont think its neededor helps enough to even use it.

Sanatatea ta este o chestiune personala. O lasi in grija unui sistem public?

In cazul balsamului, polimerii cationici sunt atrasi

ampon toxic: citete cu atenie eticheta nainte s-l foloseti

26 octombrie 2012 Invata sa traiesti sanatos, Naional, Prima pagin, Realiti economice

MIT are legtur i cu boala Alzheimer. Laurilsulfat de sodiu i lauretsulfat de sodiu: Abreviate drept SLS i SLES, aceti ageni tensioactivi fac spunurile spumoase. De asemenea pot provoca iritaii la nivelul pielii i ochilor, avnd influen negativ i asupra sistemului endocrin.

Mnnc substane nutritive protectoare. A i beta-caroten, acidul alfa lipoic i altele. Fructele de pdure proaspete, nucile, legumele crucifere i colorate, i numeroase ierburi i condimente sunt de asemenea bogate n antioxidani. Adaug suplimente botanice. Calendula i caprifoiul sunt utilizate i pentru a alina pielea iritat i inflamat.

2. Ppdia (frunze i rdcin): Rdcina de ppdie furnizeaz o susinere puternic pentru curarea ficatului i a vezicii biliare, dou organe eseniale pentru detoxifiere. Frunzele ppdiei ajut la eliminarea toxinelor din vezic i tractul digestiv. Ppdia poate fi mncat crud sau gtit, ingerat sub form de suplimente, sau but ca i ceai.

3. Semine de armurariu: Seminele plantei conin silimarin, un compus natural careprotejeaz i detoxifiaz ficatul. Armurariul spriijin sntatea vezicii biliare, n timp ce furnizeaz beneficii antioxidante i antiinflamatoare. 4. Usturoiul: Usturoiul conine muli compui sulfuroi i alte componente active care sprijin detoxifierea, eliminarea metalelor grele i o sntate imun general. 5. Coriandru: O plant aromat, coriandrul se lipete de metalele grele i de toxine i ajut la eliminarea lor din organism.
