Students make mistakes Categories of mistakes Slips : mistakes which student can correct themselves.

Errors : mistakes which student cant correct themselves (need explanation). Attemps : mistakes which occur when student tries to say something but does not yet know the correct way of saying it. Sources of the errors L1 interference : Students first language will interfere to their second language learning. Developmental errors : Student tend to over generalisation rule of grammar. ASSESSING STUDENT PERFORMANCE Teachers assessing students Comments => Teacher may say good or nod approvingly (action) as a sign of a positive assessment. Marks and grades => Marks and great which given by teacher should be objective. Reports => Written report which indicate how well the students have done in the recent past. Students Assessing Themselves Student can also monitoring and judging their own ability in language learning. FEEDBACK DURING ORAL WORK Accuracy And Fluency To poin out and correct the mistakes the student is making => teacher intervention => a stage where teacher stops the activity to make the correction. Feedback During Accuracy Work Showing incorrectness Repeating : ask the student to repeat what they have said. Echoing : repeat what students have said and emphasising the part of the utterance that was wrong. Statement and questions : teacher may say good or do people think thats correct?. Expression : facial expression or gesture of teacher such as wobbling hand. Hinting : teacher give a quiet hint. Reformulation : teacher repeat back a corrected version.

Getting it right : Teacher need to focus on the correct version in more detail if students are able to correct themselves. Feedback During Fluency Work Gentle correction : teacher give correctiom more gentle, it means we will not stop the whole activity and insist on everyone saying the item correctly. Recording mistakes : teacher write down the error that student is making. After the event : teacher give an assessment of an activity and getting the students to tell us what they found easiest and most difficult. FEEDBACK ON WRITTEN WORK Responding -> Teachers should give respond or comment which helpful for students in writing process. Correcting -> Teachers can use correction codes to indicate students mistakes. Training students -> Student need to know what teacher mean and what to do about it. Involving students -> Teacher can also encourage students to give feedback to each other. Finishing the feedback process -> Written feedback is designed not just to give an assessment of the studentswork, but also to help and teach. Burning the midnight oil -> Selective marking : teacher dont need to mark everything all the time. Different error codes : teacher can use different error codes for different task. Dont mark all the papers : teacher can mark students work in various ways. Involve the students : student can correct of each others.
