This mandatory course prepares degree level students for job searching for their co-op work terms and for post-graduate careers. Students will learn to critically evaluate their skills, attitudes, and expectations and evaluate and interpret available opportunities in the workplace. Selfmarketing techniques using resumes, cover letters, networking and interviewing will be learned and students will learn the expectations, rules, and regulations that apply in the workplace with regards to social, organizational, ethical, and safety issues. 16 1

Course Outcomes
Successful completion of this course will enable the student to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Observe the policies and procedures of the Co-operative Education department. Evaluate personal skills and objectives in relation to employer requirements and expectations. Develop an effective resume and cover letter. Research specific jobs and companies to identify employment opportunities. Perform an effective job search. Demonstrate, through question and answer, appropriate interview skills to secure a work placement. Explain the role of Health and Safety in the workplace. Evaluate materials and documents for inclusion in a portfolio.

Unit Outcomes
Successful completion of the following units will enable the student to: 1.0 Orientation to Co-op (General Information) 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 2.0 Explain the policies and procedures of the Co-op Department. Identify the services provided through Co-op and Career Services. Be aware of past postings, wages and locations. Describe the co-op marketing process.

Skills Identification (Skills Assessment) 2.1 2.2 2.3 Categorize skills (transferable, technical and personal management) for his/her job search. Analyze job postings to identify the skills required. Appreciate the importance of emphasizing and/or upgrading selected skills for resume and interview preparation purposes.

Rsums 3.1 3.2 3.3 Prepare an effective rsum using appropriate style, grammar, spelling and vocabulary for use in targeting specific employers. Select the most appropriate type of resume for various situations. Critique various resumes.

Cover and Thank You Letters 4.1 Write a cover letter using appropriate style, grammar, spelling and vocabulary for use in targeting specific employers.

The Job Search 5.1 5.2 5.3 Collect potential job opportunities from both advertised and hidden job markets. Conduct effective labour market research and information interviews. Explain how a Career/Job Fair can assist in the job search process.

Job Interviews 6.1 6.2 6.3 6.4 6.5 Identify the three stages of the interview process (pre, during, post). Identify types of interviews (i.e. behavioural, stress, structured, unstructured). Identify the employers objectives at the interview. Explain the purpose and content of a portfolio. Develop appropriate responses to typical and behavioural-based interview questions.

Work Term Employment Expectations 7.1 7.2 Identify the requirements of the student mid-progress term report and the final work term report. Identify the requirements for successful work term reports and successful work term employment.

Health and Safety in the Workplace 8.1 Explain the following: 8.1.1 8.1.2 8.1.3 8.1.4 8.1.5 Importance of workplace safety. Causes and costs of workplace injuries. Ontario laws and legislated roles and responsibilities. The meaning of due diligence. Key concepts of a successful Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management system.

Portfolio Assignment 9.1 9.2 Identify existing documents and materials to include in a portfolio. Prepare documents to include in a portfolio.
