TRP

Many times you would have had read in newspapers or news channels that TRP of some TV shows is low or is at peak. I too have been reading the same and a question arises as to what is TRP exactly and how do they know which show does well or bad. Thus I tried to find some information on the same and would like to share the same. What is TRP and why is it calculated? TRP or Television Rating point is the benchmark rating for viewership of a show for 30 days. TRP results are specially used by media channels and Advertisers to understand viewers choices and also to plan their show timings. Who calculates TRP in India? In India, TRP calculation is mainly done by INTAM- Indian television and AdvertisingMedia. How do they calculate TRP? There are 2 methods to calculate TRP. First is an older method which is through the people meter in which a device is installed in certain households. These households are actually a small sample but are selectively selected by TAM to represent actual national demographics of age, gender, income group etc. Second method is the modern method in which a specific signal is sent through satellite transmission channels along with video sample at specific intervals. This method is more accurate giving an better TRP indication and thus are better than the Peoples meter.

Television Rating Point (TRP) is a tool provided to judge which programmes are viewed the most. This gives us an index of the choice of the people and also the popularity of a particular channel. For calculation purpose, a device is attached to the TV set in a few thousand viewers' houses for judging purpose. These numbers are treated as sample from the overall TV owners in different geographical and demographic sectors. The device is called as People's Meter. It records the time and the programme that a viewer watches on a particular day. Then, the average is taken for a 30-day period which gives the viewership status for a particular channel.
