About theme of the Conference

A work of art is an extended metaphor of the authors vision of his society and the world at large. The vision is conveyed through the images of men and women. Hence characters play the most important role in unfolding the mystery of existence which has been the persistent theme of English Literature. Man is the quintessence of the vast cosmos. By knowing man we can know our cosmos better. Therefore, great artists focus on unfolding of the mind and heart of the characters. Characterswith their thoughts and feelings, with their behavior and motives - are the most important aspects of any work of art. The history of mankind has been the record of mans endless quest for success and fulfillment. Literature, as mirror to life reflects this perennial quest. The eternal theme of all the great literature has been the search for the meaning and significance of life in seemingly meaningless and futile conditions. Man is just a tiny particle in this vast cosmos. He or she cannot make laws and set his/her terms on the world for universal applications. The universe is too ambiguous to be understood or known completely. This brings in the sense of inadequacy and incompetence vis--vis the vast inscrutable universe. The great heroes and heroines of literature have been facing this dilemma since time immemorial. At the same time the incessant quest for understanding the world and its inhabitants, goes on. The fate of an individual is dependent on so many other external and internal aspects. The environment that surrounds man, the institutions that are made by man, other persons- either friends or foes of man and also the man himself - are the subjects under examination and exploration. Hence Self- search is an eternal theme of all the great works of literature. Most immortal characters in English Literature have indulged in this eternal quest. Whether it is the selfrealization of the Classical Greek heroes like Oedipus and Odysseus or reconciliation of a Shakespearean tragic hero with his tragic fate, or the anguished selfdiscovery of modern and post modernist characters -

the history of world literature is full of the portrayal of such self- pursuit. Meaningful discussion on the theme of quest for identity of the great characters in the annals of English literature is expected to bring out some unexplored facets about the mystery of human existence. It will also throw more light on another perennial issue, i.e. mans position vis--vis his society and environment thus giving us better perspective to assess the ultimate destiny of an individual in this vast inscrutable universe.
