Kindergarten program celebrates 130 years
By SHANNON SADLER
The Sun
With balloons, music and a
very large cake, Moorestown
Friends School celebrated a very
special birthday on Nov. 14 in the
Dinning Hall Commons. Holding
up extremely well for its age, fac-
ulty and students rang in the
130th birthday of the schools
kindergarten program.
Those in attendance included
Moorestown Friends School sen-
iors who have been enrolled in
the school since kindergarten,
known as the Originals, and
Moorestown Friends Schools
current kindergarten class, all of
whom sat at tables to share expe-
riences.
Among those who exchanged
was senior Peter Bader and
kindergartener Willy Didie who,
although years apart, could relate
about their past and present expe-
riences in kindergarten.
Bader said he was taken back
to the events that filled his days in
kindergarten in talking to Willy
about recess and playing with
blocks. He added that growing up
in the Moorestown Friends
School, he is always able to see
his former teacher, Teri Kaiser.
My sister had her, Willy
added.
After the kindergarten classes
poured in, students listened to a
brief presentation by Lower

of the celebration.

The passing of Dorothy
Samartino, Moorestowns tax col-
lector for more than 20 years,
brought an impact to the commu-
nity she served. Following her
battle with breast cancer, Dorothy
died on Sept. 22, leaving her hus-
band, Gordon, and her son, Mike.
However, two Moorestown
High School students have found
a way to honor their friends
mother by continuing her cause.
Close friends of Mike and fel-
low freshmen hockey players
Bryan Bielawski and Joseph Tal-
vacchia said it was only days
after Dorothys funeral when they
began talking about how they
could raise money and awareness
in her memory.
We just kind of rolled with the
hockey idea and were grateful the
team decided to buy the jerseys
for us, Bielawski said.
After first approaching the
Samartino family for permission,
Bielawski and Talvacchia then
went to their hockey coach, who
in turn approached the
Moorestown Township Public
Schools Board of Education
about hosting a special hockey
game in memory of Dorothy to
raise money for breast cancer
charities and a scholarship fund
for Mike.
Its pretty remarkable how
word just spread, said Sue
Bielawski, Brians mother.
With collection jars for Susan
G. Komen and The Cancer Foun-
dation for Personal Appearance
Inc. in Cherry Hill, Sue also sold
keychains and headbands she
made especially for the Mike
Samartino Scholarship Fund at
the Oct. 27 hockey game against
Cherokee, at the Flyers Skate
Zone in Voorhees.
In addition to the fundraising
efforts, the Moorestown Quakes
Ice Hockey JV-A team went com-
pletely pink for the game with
pink jerseys, bought for every
player by the Moorestown Quakes
Ice Hockey Club.

C
ontroversy surrounds almost
every bill that is proposed at
the state government level. If
the actual effects of the bill dont come
in question, then the partisanship of
it, or the motivation behind it, are
often scrutinized.
But a bill that was proposed recently
by state Sen. Richard Codey doesnt fit
into that category, at least in the world
according to us.
Codeys bill would expand New Jer-
seys distracted driving law to include
drivers who are temporarily stopped
whether in a traffic jam, red light or
stop sign. Basically, it would ban all
use of a cell phone while a person is
seated in the drivers seat of a vehicle.
The bill would also require the written
drivers test to include questions on
distracted driving.
When explaining his position on the
bill, Codey referred to the states DUI
law: If youre at a red light and youre
drunk, youre DUI, he said.
Makes perfect sense to us. Drivers
can be distracted, and cause major ac-
cidents, even if they are temporarily
stopped. How many times have you
seen other drivers because youve
never done this, right? hurriedly ac-
celerate at a light after they realize,
when they look up from their phone,
that the light has turned green? Situa-
tions like this can cause accidents.
Opponents of the bill, if they can be
considered this, are saying that the
true motives behind the bill are ques-
tionable. Even Codey admitted to this,
at least partially, saying that the real
aim of the bill is to put New Jersey in
line with federal standards for the Dis-
tracted Driving Grant Program. Cur-
rently, the states law isnt in line with
these standards, so it doesnt qualify
for grants.
To that, we say: Who cares?
Who cares if the motive behind en-
hancing New Jerseys distracted driv-
ing law is to receive federal grant
money? That money would be put to
use to educate and discourage people
from driving distracted.
Its not Codeys fault, or the Legisla-
tures fault, that the federal govern-
ment requires certain standards to re-
ceive grant money. Since that money
will go to good use, we should do what
is necessary to get it.
The only thing that should matter
here is the safety of those on the road,
and this bill enhances that safety.
in our opinion
Get off your phone!
Legislature should pass bill to ban phone usage for drivers
Your thoughts
How do you feel about enhanced dis-
tracted driving laws? Is it enough?
Should more be done? Are legislators
taking it too far? Share your thoughts
through a letter to the editor.
During the winter months, we all, youth
and adults alike, find ourselves experienc-
ing some level of "cabin fever." You know,
when all of that energy that we typically
use walking through town, playing soccer,
flag football, playing tennis or other activi-
ties gets pent up inside and we feel like we
want to climb the walls? Yes, it is immi-
nentit is comingthose long months of
January and February, when all of the
hype of the holidays is over and we are left
to stare at the four walls of our room.
Well, now there is a way to beat those
winter blues to get out and be active to
use up all of that energy and stay fit
(BONUS!). The Moorestown Department
of Parks & Recreation offers a wide variety
of activities for youth and adults to keep us
moving and looking forward to the warmer
months! With the newly renovated Church
Street Recreation Center and the comple-
mentary facilities the department utilizes
there is something for everyone!
Starting with our youngest members
,there are pre-school programs designed to
get tots and caregivers moving. Moving
up, there are specialized programs for girls
to encourage activity and fitness. Addi-
tionally, starting in second grade, boys and
girls can learn the fundamentals of basket-
ball either through clinics or grade specific
leagues (grades 3-12). There is a youth
bowling league as well as an adult, mixed
bowling league. There are beginner, inter-
mediate and high school volleyball leagues
and even an adult league for those of us
who can still jump! The Department of
Parks & Recreation is also proud to partner
with many local agencies and organiza-
tions to provide a wide range of special
needs programs for special needs youth
and their families. Imagine, dance classes,
arts and crafts, Zumba all available to all
residents and at reasonable prices!
So now is the time! Visit the Depart-
ment of Parks & Recreation registration
website, www.moorestownrec.com and reg-
ister yourself, your kids, the whole family,
for fun activities that keep you moving all
winter long! Keep those endorphins pump-
ing!

The Moorestown Quakes took
on the LAC Soccer club on Satur-
day, Oct. 27 and won their first
game of the season in fine fash-
ion over a very strong LAC squad.
The midfield, led by Erin O' Sulli-
van and Emily Buckley, kept pos-
session and eventually broke
through for a goal when O'Sulli-
van cracked a high shot for a one
goal lead.
The offense revved things up
with Madeline "Kujo" Gill and
Bridget "LB" O'Neill making deep
runs into the offensive end and
keeping the ball away from the
opposing squad.
O'Sullivan picked up a loose
ball in midfield and hit another
laser that found the back of the
net to put the Quakes up 2-0. LAC
fought back hard to keep pace but
the defense of Jess Garcia, Mor-
gan Pound, and anchored by
Joann Elia kept chances down. In
the second half, LAC pushed for-
ward and the outstanding play of
Sarah Taffe and DeAvionne Mon-
tague broke up play after play in
midfield keeping the LAC squad
off the board.
However, playing a man down
the entire game the Quakes start-
ed feeling the heat and gave up
seven breakways in the waning
minutes. Quakes keeper Bridget
"Ito" Hartshorne was up to the
task robbing LAC time and time
again to post yet another shut out
for the Quakes.

The community has just been
so generous, Talvacchia said.
Its been amazing how much
they support us.
Sue added that from the game
alone, The Cancer Foundation for
Personal Appearance Inc., which
helped fit Dorothy with two wigs
over the course of her battle with
breast cancer, raised approxi-
mately $400.
In addition, she commended
junior varsity coach Kevin
McGinnis, board member Barb
Schwartz and Terry Testa for
their help with organizing the
game for the Moorestown Ice
Hockey Club.
Still going strong with key-
chain and headband sales, the
boys and Sue have raised more
than $2,100 for Mikes scholarship
fund after only a month.
It makes us feel great that we
can make a difference, Bielawski
said.
Talvacchia said the Samartino
family has been very thankful for
the boys efforts, with Mikes fa-
ther even taking them to a Flyers
game recently.
Bielawski and Talvacchia, who
have been friends with Mike
since the sixth grade, said they
will continue to sell the key
chains and headbands through-
out the year, as long as there are
people who wish to contribute.
Sue, who runs a company
called Look at Me Now Bands that
produces headbands, keychains,
belts and custom and embroi-
dered ribbon, has been specially
making the pink keychains and
headbands which are both
adorned with pink ribbons and
the logo for Moorestown Town-
ship Public Schools, the cost of
which she has paid for completely
out of pocket, with all profits
being donated to the scholarship
fund.
I did this because I wanted to
help support the boys, Sue said.
I donated all ribbon and supplies
to make these so all of the money
goes to the Mike Samartino
Scholarship Fund.
Sue said anyone interested in
purchasing a keychain or head-
band for $10 apiece can do so by
sending an email to moorestow-
nawareness@aol.com.
Since Sue is local in
Moorestown, all orders can be
shipped within a few days.
In addition to helping out their
friend, both boys said the
fundraising experience has
taught them a very important life
lesson.
It taught us that even one per-
son can make a difference in
someones life, Talvacchia said.

tive philanthropic members of
their community. As a part of
this relationship, the Civility
Awards have taken a permanent
hold on Recreation Sports.
Last year, coaching assistant
Tracy Gural made this comment
about the awards, I have to let
you know that these awards are
great for the little kids. They look
forward to see who is going to get
it and I think it makes them think
about how they act each week.
This year, as if to exemplify the
importance of sportsmanship,
two coaches, from opposing teams
nominated the same young girl,
Rosie Rockell. Her coach, Jake
VanDyken, wrote, Rosie volun-
teered to play on the opposing
team as they only had four play-
ers. She played great for the other
team and told me that she wanted
to win the game for her friend on
this other team. Even though our
team won, she was humble in de-
feat and happy for everyone.
Simultaneously, the opposing
coach, Eric Mauger, sent this to
Live Civilly: I'd like to nominate
Rosie Rockell of the Moorestown
Rec Soccer second/third Grade
Green Team under Coach Van
Dyken for a 2013 Civility Award.
At this morning's soccer game be-
tween my team (the Red Team)
and her team (the Green Team),
my team did not have enough
players to compete. We only had
four players show up for the
game. After conferring with
Coach Van Dyken, he mentioned
that Rosie was willing to put on a
red shirt over her green shirt for
the game and play against her
own team. Rosie mentioned that
she would like to help out my
team because she was good
friends with one of the absent
Red Team players and wanted to
score a goal for her. Rosie scored
the only goal for the Red Team,
who lost to the Green Team her
team by a score of 5-1. Thanks to
Rosie's selfless act, we were able
to avoid a forfeit and all of the
kids were able to play.
During an era when youth
sports have often come under fire
for lack of sportsmanship and
overly aggressive participants,
the Moorestown Department of
Parks & Recreation takes great
pride in offering an environment
where youth can learn the funda-
mentals of team sports, engage in
a competitive and fun atmosphere
and learn other important life les-
sons those of teamwork and
sportsmanship. Department of
Parks & Recreation Director
Theresa Miller commented, "The
Department of Parks and Recre-
ation has been very fortunate to
work closely with Live Civilly
over the last three years. The Ci-
vility Award has been a great ad-
dition to our youth sports pro-
grams and we receive many
praises from parents that their
children are learning teamwork
and sportsmanship.
This year, to date, the Civility
Awards have been awarded to the
following athletes: Troy Gilhool,
Samantha Abele, Jessica Strobel,
Eli Namey, Lilly Boren, Kendall
McHugh, Jasmin Adelsberger
and Aliska Calxyn, Erika Jonson,
and Rockell. Dont worry, coach-
es, there is still time. The kinder-
garten and 1-6 leagues still have
games left.

ferings. For more information

NOVEMBER 2026, 2013 THE MOORESTOWN SUN 23
School director Kelly Goula, head
of school Larry Van Meter and
two Originals, Kim Gaise of
Mt. Laurel and Steve Mannion of
Moorestown.
Following the presentation, the
seniors read their birthday-
themed books to the current
kindergarten class.
As she read to both kinder-
garteners Livia Kim and Abbey
Devlin, senior Katrina Savon said
she enjoyed watching the two as
they pointed out their teachers to
her.
They were pointing out their
library teacher, who I see every
day, Savon said.
Following the seniors reading
to the kindergarten class, Lower
School Spanish teacher Erick
Perez performed a special
acoustic rendition of Happy
Birthday, in which the students
sang along, before grabbing a
piece birthday cake.
Its so special because its one
of the very first kindergartens in
all of New Jersey, Goula said
during the celebration.
The Moorestown Friends
School adopted a kindergarten
program in 1883, almost a century
after the school first opened in
1785. The schools kindergarten
program is one of the oldest in
the country, since kindergarten
was not incorporated into schools
on a national level until 10 years
later.
In the following years, a
prekindergarten was also added
to the program in 1944, with a pre-
school also being added in 1992.
In addition to a lengthy history,
the school also housed famous
alum Alice Paul, who was en-
rolled in the schools kinder-
garten program in 1891. Paul
went on to graduate from
Moorestown Friends School in
1901 and go on to play an impor-
tant role in the suffragist move-
ment in the United States.
Goula said during her presen-
tation that her daughter, Anna
Goula, enrolled in kindergarten,
giving her the unique perspective
on the program from both an ad-
ministrator and parent stand-
point.
Over the years, Goula said that
while curriculums have evolved
the most, the fundamentals of the
kindergarten are still the same,
such as playtime and going out-
side.
Unlike public school districts,
Moorestown Friends School
houses all grades from kinder-
garten to 12th grade in one loca-
tion, a distinction that Goula said
lends to the unification of the
grades from lower, upper and
middle.
They really try to form a spe-
cial connection, Goula said.
Helping to facilitate mentor-
ship between the younger and
older students is a program that
allows students of the Upper
School to give up their study hall
to volunteer as a student aide for
the Lower School classes.
Goula recalled recently one
Upper student who personally
emailed a birthday wish to a
Lower School student through
the students teacher, when she
learned she would not be present
for the girls birthday celebration
due to a tennis match.
Agreeing with Goula, Van
Meter explained that the school
tries to consistently host events to
keep the older students involved
with the younger students to fos-
ter mentorship and bonding, such
as the upcoming Thanksgiving
Happening and May Day, which
involves the entire student body.
Graduating Moorestown
Friends School in 1968, Van Meter
said another benefit of the school
is that siblings remain in the
same location, even if they are
grades apart, as was the case with
his sister.
I had an older sister that I
would see every day, Van Meter
said.
Sarah Applegate, a senior who
recently committed to Dickenson
College for basketball, said that it
is days like the 100th Day Celebra-
tion, May Day and Grandparents
Day that stand out in her mind
from her early days at
Moorestown Friends School.
Its nice to continue those tra-
ditions, Applegate said.
According to a press release
from Moorestown Friends
School, approximately 87 stu-
dents are enrolled in the Begin-
nings at MFS program, which
encompasses preschool,
prekindergarten and kinder-
garten.
