had that day devoted to Geology , Minerals and LIVE Music of the
Andes , while for 17 days - within J une - OPYKTOAOIIKA NEA -
NEWS ON MINERALS participated in the 26

Piraeus Book
Fair organized by the Association of Booksellers and Publishers of
Piraeus. OPYKTOAOIIKA NEA NEWS ON MINERALS
participated for first time as Member of the Association of
Booksellers and Publishers of Piraeus and we owe to report the
excellent organization by the sea in Zea Port in a magical
environment for those who are familiar with Zea Port in Piraeus.
This Book Fair could offer joy , pleasure and education as it was
accessible - from every point of view-by the visitors. We have
reasons to be particularly happy as we could combine in our stand
Earth Science books , periodicals , interactive CDs , Special
Mineralogy Maps , Educational products in Paleontology ,
Seismology etc with actual Mineral Specimens , so the book-
visitors had the chance to taste some of the perfect creations of
Mother Earth such as crystals , gemstones , fossils . There was a
great of interest by the visitors as everything man uses nowadays
either is cultivated or is mined. Our desire was to cover the
educational aspect of mineral resources and the mining side as the
topic is huge and we hope in our next participation to show other
extensions of the topic Minerals, Crystals and Fossils. We
wish to congratulate the organizers as well as the participants who
with their participation and enthusiasm keep alive the Piraeus Book
Fair.

The opal is an unusual material in structure. It is amorphous (like glass), its composition is basically silicon dioxide,
SiO
2
. The specific nature of opal lies in the fact that its mass contains a quantity of approximately 10% water.
(Quantities of water between 3 to 21 % in opal , have been reported). The SiO
2
with water form small globules
arranged in space, forming various geometric shapes. When light passes through these provisions, it is refracted and
scattered in random directions, so the surface of the mineral shows a rare and beautiful alternation of different
iridescent colors.
The opal has a hardness of 6 and specific gravity 2.2. It is deposited at a relatively low temperature and may occur
in the fissures of almost any kind of rock, being most commonly found with limonite, sandstone, rhyolite, marl and
basalt.
Opal has the ability to dehydrate. The water that is present in its mass is evaporated. The evaporation of this
course is very slow. The dehydrated opal, initially becomes friable, and then with the lapse of many years is losing
its colors. Therefore, as mentioned in the literature, when someone has an expensive piece of opal and aspires to
bequeath to his descendants, he must keep opal in a closed box with moisture.

As it is reported in the International Bibliography Azurite [Cu

] is a soft, deep blue copper mineral
produced by weathering of copper ore deposits. The mineral, a carbonate, has been known since ancient times, and
was mentioned in Pliny the Elder's Natural History under the Greek name kuanos (kucv: "deep blue," root of
English cyan) and the Latin name caeruleum. The blue of azurite is exceptionally deep and clear, and for that reason
the mineral has tended to be associated since antiquity with the deep blue color of low-humidity desert and winter
skies. The modern English name of the mineral reflects this association, since both azurite and azure are derived via
Arabic from the Persian lazhward , an area known for its deposits of another deep blue stone, lapis lazuli ("stone of
azure"). There are many places on earth which have and still yield top azurite specimens.Among these areas is also
Lavrion , Attiki , Hellas. We cite in this issue some of Natures wonders in the land of Lavrion. Enjoy !
